Phantom Tweet Makes Drama for Ubisoft's Watch Dogs

Ever since the Ubisoft E3 press conference, Watch Dogs has been the game on almost everybody’s mind. The biggest questions surrounding the game are, 1) when can I get my hands on it?, and 2) which platforms will it be available on?

Earlier in the week, a Twitter post popped up on the official Watch Dogs account saying “the game will be released in 2013 and will be released on PC and consoles.”

That post has since been taken down. Kind of strange.

The post’s removal probably isn’t due to the mention of platforms. Ubisoft Montreal producer Domini Guay practically confirmed a PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 release of Watch Dogs last week.

Perhaps Ubi didn’t want to announce the 2013 release window quite yet. It’s possible that Watch Dogs has a long way to go, and perhaps they would prefer to release the game when it’s ready rather than rush it to make shelves next year.

What do you think? Is Watch Dogs practically guaranteed for a PC release? Will we see it next year?

Give us your thoughts in the comments below.

As always, keep checking with GAMEBREAKER for more Watch Dogs and PC gaming coverage.

Why can’t they just develop consoles with a slot in a motherboard for video cards and processors, that way they can just sell upgrades for the same system and can keep them on par with PCs?

    • Old Ben

Is that meant as a joke or a serious question?

The whole point of consoles is that any game made for console X will run on any console X. If you start having component combinations, you start having to list “minimum console specs”, and that’s not the kind of thing console buyers want to have to worry about. People who want that already have a solution: buy a PC instead.

      • jayremy

Mostly rhetorical jest, just saying because I don’t own any of the latest consoles personally. Obviously the companies can make more money from selling something better re-skinned than a single upgrade.

But to your point it wouldn’t change anything about consoles if they did hardware, buying a new video card for example *shouldn’t* in turn cause older games not to run and secondly if you have to buy a new console like going from xbox to 360 is pretty much the same concept as getting a newer video card in a sense.

Its not a matter of having a new video card out every month either but a brand specifically for a system, but I will not go on about it, it was question one would say after a sigh.

        • Old Ben

          > buying a new video card for example *shouldn’t* in
          > turn cause older games not to run

But it wouldn’t improve those games, either (because they were coded with the original GPU in mind). And any game designed for the new card wouldn’t run on the old one, which means people would have to start checking every game for “system requirements”, developers would be under pressure to make versions for both cards, and so on.

All of that goes completely against what the console market (manufacturers, publishers and end users) wants.

          • jayremy

As I have said you have an xbox 360 or an xbox, it isn’t too hard for current gamers to know that. Systems could see upgrades every couple of years instead of waiting nearly decades. Game coding doesn’t make the game suddenly not run when on different GPUs, doesn’t really have anything to do with that.

If anything it would be a simple “default settings” and “upgraded settings” simple as flipping a switch, very little extra coding will have to be done, the main difference would be in storage space requirements may be raised for the compatibility.

          • Old Ben

AAA games frequently take 3-5 years to develop.

The people making and selling consoles (and developing games for them) know their market.

      Cost.
An upgradable console would bump up the price.
The upgrades would be so niche, they would cost more than a new console.
It would be a nightmare for game developers.
Last thing you want is to upgrade your hardware and find your favorite game no longer runs.

Stop saying “you know what im sayin” it feels forced and awkward. Be you. You don’t have to develop a character for yourself.

    • Chris Ella

Agree, the constant “You know what I’m sayin’” throughout felt awkward.

What about the hastily pulled Gw2 crafting to lvl 80 video? =/

  • Camzillasmom

Since the Ubisoft CEO already said that it will be on PC and consoles, I think that they’re more conerned about the date. I don’t mind waiting, as long as they don’t cancel the project for some reason.

TheGameStation’s youtube channel interviewed a guy from Ubisoft who flat out said 2013 or “when it’s done.”  So, why was this an issue?

  • http://twitter.com/benjamintlc Benjamin Crowther

Yes, Austin, we do know what you are saying :P

  • Unsttopabull

Its been confirmed mulitple times at several interviews that it will come to Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. It was also said that they will consider addithional platforms dependant on the time and and new popular platforms at the time of the release.

They confirmed the demo was played on PC.

  • Revanhavoc

I think many of us feel the XBOX 360 and PS3 aren’t capable of the scripting complexity and graphics demonstrated in the Watch Dogs demo.

Could be a Witcher 2 kind of situation first on PC, then coming out later for the new consoles XBOX 720 and PS4.

Ubisoft does have lots of experience in an open world setting through their Assasin’s Creed development, but this looks like a brand new engine.

One possibility is that if GTA 5 can do a huge open world, apparantly 4 times the size of Liberty City in GTA 4, then the technology must exist in current-gen and Watch Dogs has more of a chance for a console release next year.
