It’s that time again for another GAMEBREAKER After Dark! Mike Schaffnit and Josh Allen, are joined by Gary Gannon and they answer your uncensored gaming questions LIVE and give their opinions based on their experiences. This week one caller asks what we think constitues a “real Gamer”

If you want to call in with a question be sure to tune in LIVE every Tuesday night at 9PDT right here on GAMEBREAKER.

  • Joey Biggs

In this Josh says, on the account of the league of legends cheating, that they couldn’t hear the casters and stuff, but if they were open to the audience couldn’t they hold down their mic and hear what everyone was saying? 0.o

Yay! No Darnell! Maybe we’ll have three people who add to the show now! But definetly the teams that watched, need to be Disqualified, *none* of this should be on Riots shoulders.

I kinda have to agree with Schaffnit on the gamer topic. I consider a gamer to be one who has played, and continues to play, a myriad of games, and has at least occasionally gone outside the game to learn more about it.

A ‘gamer’ obsesses over games to varying degrees, not just plays them a lot.

I would say I am an elitist gamer…Yeah…

(And condescending, and superior, and often just plain rude. To be honest, Revan, you sometimes strike me as a pretentious prince who thinks rather highly of himself and his opinion.)

And sometimes people think you are a figment of my imagination, havoc.

Ah the infamous question of “What is a gamer?” Personally, I think the issue is, as with many things in life, the fact that there are lots of different ways you can approach the meaning of a word. From a strictly technical perspective, a gamer would be one who plays games. Anyone who plays video games is some form of gamer. However, culture and context both apply significance and meaning to certain subsets of gamers, but frustratingly use the same word. While I say the technical definition is merely “one who games”, I would say that the broader (and more significant) definition would be someone who is passionate about gaming. It doesn’t have to be measured in hours per day or in exactly what genres are considered to be “hardcore”, I think that it is all in the mindset, the attitude, and the investment.

Many people who just “casually” game are doing it just to fit in some entertainment into a slot in their lives. This isn’t a bad thing, but typically it means that they would be fine filling that same time slot with some other activity and wouldn’t overly miss the casual games they played. What I think of when someone says “gamer” though is someone who chooses games because they *prefer and care about* games. They (we) follow the industry, the trends, and we think about what makes a game good or bad. It’s more than just “something to pass the time”, it’s a lifestyle choice.

It’s like the difference between someone who watches movies, which is pretty much everyone in the world, and someone who is what I would call a movie aficionado. The former will watch new movies they hear are good, or will occasionally rent or stream a movie to pass some time. The latter is someone who watches an enormous quantity of movies and is invested/interested in the aspects that make film good, interested in ways that the medium can communicate its messages, and fairly analytical about them.

As I said, many other disciplines or hobbies have specific distinctions for the level of investment. Gamers are all lumped into one group and one word. Culturally, I think of someone calling themself a gamer as someone basically saying they are an aficionado, more than simply “one who games”. It’s not about elitism, it’s merely about making a distinction about your level of involvement. More or less is not better or worse, merely different.

As the person who asked the question and pretty much agrees with you on every level, +10 internets to you.  I didn’t want to answer the question they asked back to be because I didn’t want to put ideas in their head and maybe have them just agree.

Excellent show, After Dark needs more Gary Gannon. Im not saying replace anyone, just add Gary.It would be amazing to see a League of Legends MMO of some type, the character design and backgrounds of the characters could offer a bunch to a game of this type.  Also Im not an elitist gamer.

hehe… it’ll be really tough to have Darnell and Gary, so they’ll have to make choices then :)

    • Depravity

As much as I enjoy all the Darnell commentary everywhere else, I have a feeling he doesn’t fit in a show format such as this one. Jokes and hilarity are paramount in a show, but he goes overboard and corrupts the professionalism that has to be the foundation of it all. That’s why the new Monty’s Minute is so f. good. And people calling in deserve more than just to be trolled on.

  • AkumaShogun259

Best episode of After Dark yet guys! Awesome job! So much better with 3 people discussing then just 2 people and Darnell fishing.

  • Alex Wallace

Lawl Gary my homeboy lookin tired…

In Asheron’s Call (old MMORPG game) they actually had developers play bosses and had them running around in cities and they’d beat people up. It was the most fun I’ve ever had. After a couple of minutes they would fly off and you never knew when they’d be back which could have been hours, days or weeks.

  • George Vink

Really nice show but the video streaming really doesn’t work well for me. lots of hiccups and unplayable on my android device. I would like either a download, or other formats like YouTube  Love the show but this really tempers my enjoyment.

ppl talk about cash shops but what about product placement, if game is popular you can put commercials in popular game like billboard or items with brands logos.

  • Krionion

This was the first time I saw Gary be the co-host. I really liked it, it was sort of weird :D

I’m pretty rich IRL so I don’t really mind cash shops. When I get my paycheck im like yah now i can buy stuff in games.

Every time Schaffnit screws up his job at the computer. EVERY TIME!

  • BBarrikade

Gary knows the steak doesn’t exist.  He knows that when he puts it in his mouth, The Matrix tells his brain that it is juicy and delicious.

  • Dekin

I want to see Darnell and Gary have a troll war…..yeah

I agree with Mike S about the definition of a “gamer”.

Just like throwing a football doesn’t make you an athlete or a quarterback, playing games doesn’t make you a gamer.  It takes a certain level of dedication.

What in tarnation is going on..for the past few hours none of the videos on gamebreaker would load..now they do but they play 3 sec and buffer 5 min. (any other site works just fine)

For the LoL Action RPG thing, they would need to make it sort of like Darkspore. Where you pick your team, dynamically switch between them with a cooldown and have the same, small amount of abilities.

I like having Gary on the show but as someone who has done professional audio engineering please separate the two microphones and prevent the echo. Love all the shows and ton of respect for what you guys are pulling off but echos, terrible.

for the second caller i say go to extra credits on penny arcade there is an episode that explains this

  • http://www.facebook.com/jim.wilberger Jim Wilberger

All respect to MikeB/Darnell, but I have to agree with a couple other commenters here, this was the most entertaining After Dark yet having Gary onboard.  I’m not sure the format of this show really works for Darnell’s personality and style.  It was great fun to watch Gary goof off and interact with the callers, just a better show than what had been done previously.  Wanted to provide my honest feedback about the show considering the format is so new for gamebreaker.  Keep up the great work!

lol how does Gary not know what a Gamer is?  I did not know he was so out of touch with the gaming community.
