Woot! Thanks for all the feedback guys. I already changed up my build and it is working out ALOT better for me.

This build was holding me back. Maybe I will submit v2 later!

    go, go, power ranger?

Could we get a link to the GuildHead build with each video? It’d help the viewers follow along better with the build breakdown.

“Pet choices are incredibly important” except that pets can’t attack AND move at the same time!

I was both excited and terrified the hosts would do a Ranger build before the promised changes starting on November 15th. Few people understand the issues the Ranger’s face, particularly as a pet class… a pet class who’s pets cannot reliably damage a moving target.

    • Nick Cattane

Nov. 15th – here’s hoping our class gets fixed! ;)   Still a very fun class though in my opinion and there are a couple specs/weapon combos that are quite viable.

Actually, I think both the 2nd and 3rd sword chain attack root. You get to move a little bit in between hits, but as soon as both of those animations go off, your stuck.

On the plus side though, the sword 2 and 3 abilities do have some built-in mobility. The 2 roll-behind, at least in PvE, in great for getting out of the way off those channeled frontal cone attacks. The 3 has a dodge back and then a leap forward, which you can wait on for a few seconds, giving you enough time to jump out and pop a heal or one of your off-hand ranged abilities before jumping back in.

      • N Carrott

No, those two are evade abilities. Hornet Sting/Monarch’s Leap and Serpent’s Strike work just fine. The chain in the 1 ability is confirmed by developers, such as Jon Peters, on the official forums as “not working as intended” (read: bugged) and unintentionally roots the player – preventing the use of Dodge Rolls or basic movement (as I stated above).

I think we’re on different pages here. When I was talking about attacks that root the ranger, I meant the 2nd and 3rd hits of the rangers #1 ability auto-attack chain. I realize that it is bugged, that’s why I went on to say its a good thing that the #2 and #3 abilities provide mobility. While I’m not sure that they are true evades (like the 3rd hit of ranger’s greatsword auto-attack skill chain) they can definitely get you out of harms way.

          • N Carrott

Part 1 of the chain is Slash, “Slashes your foe.” Part 2 is Kick, “Kick your foe for a short Cripple (2s).” Part 2 is Pounce, “Leap at your foe, striking them. Your pet gains Might.” None of the chained attacks evade, though 3 does leap to the target; however, it does not “provide mobility” as the player cannot move freely when the chain is occurring. Greatsword’s chain is the only one that has an Evade mechanic on the third swing.

I.E. they cannot strafe, move forward, move backward, dodge roll, turn, etc. Their only “mobility” is the ability leaping them to their target.

Melee is a dangerous place to be for any class. Being forced to stick to a target is not fun.

            …..

We’re talking about 2 different subjects here, we’re saying the same thing, yet you keep trying to correct me.

Part 1: I’m saying the 2nd and 3rd hit of the #1 ability root you, however not completely, there a (very) little wiggle room in between attacks (hardly worth mentioning actually, I see now that I shouldn’t have in the first place.)

Part 2: I’m saying the #2 and #3 abilities provide mobility, the leap and the roll, and that’s nice because of how the #1 ability chain roots you most of the time.

    talk more on PVE please.

On the heal choice, I’ve always favored Troll heal, especially if you plan on kiting a lot. One disadvantage of Healing Spring is that its a PBAoE. In a high mobility fight, you might not have the option of staying inside that AoE. Also, Rangers are very weak against CC and conditions in general, so once you get out of that heal, a smart player will be able to keep you out of it.

On the elite choice. As far as I’m concerned, Rampage as One is the only elite skill Rangers have. Spirits in general are just bad atm (hopefully to be addressed post 9/15) and the elite pet isn’t terribly special either.

Ed on marksman tier one traits “…the other traits in this first tiers and not terribly overwhelming…” — That more or less sums up Ranger traits in general…yeah. Again, high hopes for that 9/15 patch, Rangers really need some love.

And we got nothing on the 15th.

Wait, strike that: we got improved underwater damage. /flipstable

Maybe just my speakers, but both Top and Ed (especially) have incredibly overbearing mics this episode. makes it VERY hard to listen too. not sure if its their set up or something gary is channeling.

I want to play a PvP focused Ranger in this game so bad now.  It’s getting harder and harder for me to resist getting into this game.  My biggest barriers right now are I don’t know anyone who plays and I am worried about PvE content lasting.

Is this show cancelled? Been waiting for new episode for some time now. Anybody know?

show is dead. GW2 popularity has dropped down so they are refocusing on other things that are more popular. I suspect they’ll resurrect this if there is a substantial change to the game, or if Arenanet gives Gary a bunch of coin (like what Trion did with Rift)
