With the recent release of more info on Bungie’s Destiny, some viewers would like to know what the guys think.

One viewer asks if Josh Allen and Mike Schaffnit okay with the Bungie’s Destiny being console-specific and what their thoughts on the reveal event are.  Another would like to know if they think that Destiny’s use of mobile integration will encourage more developers to add it to their games.

Are games less refined today than when the industry first started?

Eduardo ponders this question with Mike  and Josh as they go into detail about the change of the video game industry over the past couple of years. Other callers ask the two to give their opinions on Monster Hunter, Kingdom Hearts and Forge.

The lines are open and the volume is up, so listen up! Caller lines open every Tuesday night at 9PST on Skype… so be sure to tune in live and let YOUR voice be heard!  And, if you missed last week’s episode of After Dark, be sure to catch it here.

A complete list of questions in this week’s show follows.

  • What are your thoughts on all of the Destiny information? Are you upset it’s not coming to PC? What about the event they had for press and showed them nothing
  • With Destiny doing more with mobile integration, do you think that other developers will embrace the idea and add it to their game?
  • Do you see untapped potential for more innovation in the ARPG genre? (ie: adding more in depth blocking/defense mechanics)
  • What Kingdom Hearts worlds would you like to see added to any new installment?
  • Have you guys ever played the Monster Hunter series? Why haven’t US companies made a game similar to it and brought it over to the US after its huge success in Japan?
  • Do you think games nowadays are less refined than they were in the past?
  • Have either of you played Forge and what do you think of it? It’s available on Steam.
  • Any advice for players with multiple alts looking to get involved in Mists of Pandaria?
  • What do you think of the new Youtube Channel layout?

I agree with Lore on the new console dates..  Even Sony has mentioned that they wouldn’t release the PS4 til 2015 or so.

most devs won’t work on the new Consoles since their hardware probably isn’t set in stone yet. as well as the software dev kits required to even begin to make code for game engines won’t be given out to any studio/dev company until probably about 3 to 4 months before the new console release date.

      PS4 holiday 2013… we are after conference…

So, I’ve only just seen this comment and it actually called out to me to comment. Lets forget the Sony press conference has just occured and we now have a Holiday 2013 date, which could still slip.

First up on the whole 2015 thing, that wasn’t actually stated as “we won release anything until 2015″ – I recall the quote actually being along the lines of, thats when they intend to bring the PS3 to the end of its life cycle. From a business perspective it simply wouldn’t be smart to keep going past that date as this truly has been the longest cycle we’ve seen and Devs are exhausting their capabilities.

Secondly – “most devs won’t wok on the new consoles since their hardware probably isn’t set in stone”. This I can straight out claim as not true. The hardware of consoles has to be solidified a good year or so in advance before any dev kits even make it out into the open. This is why consoles have always been just slightly lack luster over the PC, as producers have to sit down and be like “OKAY we’re going to use this right now”. The development cycle for the PS4 and Xbox 720 I can almost gurantee began around about 2 years after the current gen consoles were released. There is A LOT more than simply choosing components in the development cycle than people take into credit.

As for when dev kits are provided to studios. 3-4 months? My friend, if you can make a game in 3-4 months on brand new tech, I will bow down and call you a god. Dev kits have been out in the open since 2011 with Epic hinting that they received there Xbox 720 kits back in November 2011. Then there was the fiasco of the inside informant selling his on Ebay in early January last year. So these things have been out there for a good few years.

i live on youtube, the changes just make me spend less time there and less time searching for new channels to view – it pushes the top dozen channels even if i’ve looked at them and seen that i don’t enjoy them. google, i am dissapoint

It seems like they’re trying to combine what they’ve got now with what Netflix and Hulu are sparking up.

    Shaf… I’m disappointed, playing fps on gamepad…

About this action game… Every game has animation lockdown… DMC, God of War, all beat’em ups, all fighting games also you can’t run and punch at the same time.
Only mmo w/o animation lock is GW2 (beside skills that you must perform not moving).

    • Chris Catone

As far as fps on consoles…IKR?  That’s like preferring to eat your steak through a straw.  Anyway, Imo, JK2 (Jedi Knight 2 for the youngers) was the best video game melee I’ve ever played.  I spent years in dueling servers on that game. Anyway, I brought that up because the only moves you couldn’t self-interrupt were made that way since they could 1-shot and were pretty quick animations anyway,

(Well technically you could jump out of the yellow DFA and do a series of fake DFAs for style points but it didn’t do any damage if you did that anyway)

In light of the recent Sony Press Conference, Lore’s comment’s on the PS4 and Destiny amuse me.

    • RazrVII

Yeah, i actually lawled out loud a few times at how amazingly far off he was with his predictions. Oh well, even Lore can’t see the future all the time :)

    Hello, First time here.
Something I would like to say about games coming out for a new Xbox3 or the PS4 is the it will make ports to PC 100 of times better due to a huge jump in Console technology and x86 coding and programing.

  • no_spam

As soon as i heard console only i completely tuned out and have zero interest in hearing any thing more about this game.
