Are you gaming safely?

ArenaNet is certainly hoping so as it has been sending out all the information one could desire on how to better protect your Guild Wars 2 account. There’s even a blacklist of 20 million passwords to make sure you can’t put “password” as your, well, password. But is that enough?

Apparently not, as news that an authenticator should be soon in place was announced this past week. Not an in-house one mind you, it’s a ready to go system by Google. Why go this route? We discuss the pros and cons.

More lovely patch notes occupy us with the ringing in of various changes. No longer will you get one solitary copper for city exploration. Is the tooth fairy dead too?

Also mobs in the tutorial opener will no longer drop items to swell your satchel. What was the point of this, have people really been farming at level 1? We discuss why this move was necessary.

Jon Peters spoke about the issues with balancing server populations when there seems to be a disincentive for guilds to move. We talk about the problems and who it is affecting in particular.

Also, the incredible problem of how to blind a brick was brought up in regards to the effects of condition builds on objects. Will we soon be able to confuse a trebuchet?

We have your viewer questions to round off another busy show.

Join GAMEBREAKER’s Gary Gannon, Massively‘s Richie “Bogotter” Procopio and Elisabeth Cardy along with ZAM’s Scott Hawkes for the latest episode of GuildCast!

GuildCast 42: Password Blacklists and Authenticators for Guild Wars 2

I can’t watch it: Video format or MIME type is not supported.

the reason people dont’ like smart phone authenticators, is cuz people like to change phones , sometimes a lot and faster then imaginable.

trying to change and re-add authenticators to your account gets real annoying and a huge hassle.

for the smartphone authenticators app, you CANNOT just get a new phone, re-download the authenticator app, and just start using it with your account like normal..  it must be re-added, to the account, and authorized to be used with your account..

it took Blizzard two years to get their system a lot more smoother then what it was originally.

    • Nick Cattane

What?  Who is constantly changing smart phones?  Let’s say you change at an insane rate of 3 times a year… even then that’s still one time every 120 or so days…  A vast majority of people have their phones for years – you are talking about a group of users that is under 1% of the pop.

      • Gamizero

haha.. i guess i need to be a bit more detailed, sorry.. i also meant those with phones where you can change rom images (mostly android phones).. just changing roms   and even version changing can nullify your current secure Key app, and the new load will not be the correct one that currently attached to your account.

  • RolyVento

the key authentication should be built inside the game just like AION does it, it’s brilliant.

No need for apps or devices.

an add for alaska r u for serious ?

  • pandora005

I dont have a mobile phone at all … because I dont need one. Bringing in Google is a bad idea, because the data collectors control too much of the internet already.

It should be “I don’t remember what my password is EITHER” (well unless it is your second account, then 2,3,4 … are ok).

I was farming the tutorial for weapons as an elementalist, because you are screwed with a ton of skills to learn. Also spending a lot of time there allows to unlock a bigger part of the skills, which is important for the elementalist.

The rewards for the personal story mostly only look different, but the stats mostly suck. Personally I also think it is a terrible idea to split the “10 level story” into chunks, because I was doing one and ended up with a “very urgent baddies are attacking X and you should come to defend”, but since the level for that part was 3 levels higher I had to NOT do it immediately. That totally takes away from the immersion.

  • Morturion

I really hope that the authentication isn’t going to be a must or smartphone-app only, because I don’t have the money for a smartphone. If it is, that’s going to be a very stupid thing, and prevent quite some people from playing GW2.

    • ScottHawkes

Not to worry, it isn’t necessary to have a smartphone to run the Google authenticator. You can get it via text message or phone call. http://support.google.com/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1037451

    • TheHolgar

      agree

    • JJGlyph

You really don’t need an authenticator to keep your account safe. Sad how ppl think that. Just use a password that is brute-force proof and don’t use it on any other sites/accounts.

      • Nick Cattane

This is exactly what I do.  I have a separate account just for trusted game companys (like anet/blizzard/etc) and I don’t use that email for anything but those.  Guess what, my password isn’t that complex and it’s never been hacked.  Ya know why?  ‘Cause the email itself isn’t even out there to be tested.  All these QQ’ers need to learn how to protect themselves as these lessions of account security can be easily applied to your own personal financial holdings – in which case financial institutions don’t even offer an authenticator ;)

  • http://twitter.com/Shredhz Shredhz

Wow Elixabeth looking genuinely sad that the camera  is messing with her jumping puzzles.

  • Schirf

Passwords need to be more than just a word or two.  I can tell you my system and still feel secure.  I take my favorite book, turn to my favorite page, and use the 1st letter of the first 10 words of my favorite passage (plus the punctuation that occurs) and then add in the page number.  Example (not my password, btw): AwrM,bnttso13  — I know the sentence well enough to remember the password… if I forget the page number I can look it up.

  • patrick.kershaw

For anyone who doesn’t own a smart phone, you can download Bluestacks which is an android emulator for the PC which will allow you to run apps.  It works with the SWTOR app.

  • Krzysztof Kotarba

NEVER chose words for passwords… just let your cat walk over keyboard, done.

    • Nick Cattane

This isn’t WoW.  They offer a different experience and some will like and some won’t.

    • Spammerbam

Being an e-sport and competitive, yes, but not sure about the 3v3 arena type game and capture the flag being mandatory. GW2 offers a different experience and gameplay, so Anet might add something similar.

Who knows. You should create that topic in the suggestions section of their official forums to get more feedback.

the number of problem ive presonally reported during beta and to see this major problem still in game. like camera problems. lag in wvw. level scaling vs gear scaling
PVE ranged mobs such a gunner burns down people in 1sec
and spvp class balance still isn’t really based 1vs1 and more of rock paper sissiors style.
so if team gets lucky on team match up they pretty much auto win. even if both teams will have same level of gameplay skill.
at this point i dont see how GW2 can apeal to hardcore players such as myself.
i got into hardcore guild before the lauch. majority of the guild members were level 80 with full exotic gear pretty much on official lauch day.
done most of dungeons and 100% world / world bosses / WvW took the map multiplay times.
and that lasted for pretty much 3weeks of play time for most of the guild.
and at this point maybe from a filtered 200members hardcore have like 5people online that are leveling alts for few mins a day.
so not sure what arenanet can do to bring it back. so people will play it just for fun.
so maybe guild wars 2 is for playing 1-2hours at the time so that will last for more than 3weeks.
    and not for hardcore players

    • http://twitter.com/THRILLJO Jordan Powell

Hardcore players with that playstyle are like Locusts. They rapidly consume and move on. If you consume content that quickly, there’s nothing any developer can do about. When did “playing just for fun,” become a bad thing?

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/ITHF7XKYGVXFAPCDMDJTKHLBBU Lian Wan

Never? Some people just enjoy bragging.

    • Nick Cattane

Lol I stopped reading after your 3rd broken sentence.  At least take the time to formulate your thoughts before you spew it out.

    • Spammerbam

      - Camera problems isn’t easily fixed. In any game.
      - Lag in WvW: that’s bound to happen. Even though Anet is working on this problem, WvW seems to be running smoothly for me.- Level scaling vs gear scaling: ….Wait what? What about it?- “PVE ranged mobs such a gunner burns down people in 1sec”       ^  I guess you haven’t played Diablo3 Inferno mode. And you call yourself a hardcore gamer.. some contents are meant to be hard and some enemies are meant to 1-hit KO you; not everything is going to be easy.- “spvp class balance still isn’t really based 1vs1 and more of rock paper sissiors style.so if team gets lucky on team match up they pretty much auto win. even if both teams will have same level of gameplay skill.”
^ No idea what you’re trying to say here. GW2 is meant to be competitive through skills set and unique builds.

      - “people will play it just for fun. so maybe guild wars 2 is for playing 1-2hours at the time so that will last for more than 3weeks. and not for hardcore players”
^ Not to disappoint you, but GW2 is meant to be casual. If you’re planning to grind your way to get elite gears that gives you a big advantage, you might as well play WoW.  If you’re looking for new contents, then just be patient; Anet tends to constantly update with loads of content — their main focus is to stabilize the game right now.

I don’t own a smartphone, nor do I have the disposable income for an overpriced gadget like that and its monthly bill. Arena Net, why don’t you want me to play GW2? I even pre-purchased damn it.

    • Jay

I think you can still minimize GW2 and confirm the authorization request through your normal browser.

  • DerKomp

the 72 copper from tutorial area would be exactly enough to get a pickaxe, a hatchet, and a gathering sickle. I always stuck around long enough to get something worth selling so i could start out with gathering tools in hand.

With the item progression, it is pretty much the same as GW1, except they have removed purple, shifted yellow and green down 1 notch and added gold. Given that the original game came out 7 years ago, not long after WoW and before a lot of the others, conventions probably set at that point

the colour scheme is logical, the only game that even use a logical colour scheme:
it’s the colours of the rainbow, and the order from the rarity follows that…

  • Richard Girard

You guys never address the real issues of the game like the excessive botting, anti-farm code, or the lack of action taken against botters by ANet

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/SQV5X3OV5Q5TQOLUHGJKHCG7WE Esteban

Lies. ANet have already posted what they’re doing about botters, hackers and etc. Please inform yourself more.

That is a lie according to my Blocked list. I block every bot I report and I haven’t seen any return. There is another issue with that since most look like they were from compromised accounts but they are definitely doing something.

    • Spammerbam

“lack of action taken against botters by ANet”

Troll much? If you follow GW2 on their Official Facebook, Twitter, and forums, then you would know that they keep everyone updated with everything and what their plans are.

GW 2 is a total Casual game … no sense for me to play such a bullshit game 80 after 3 days and best gear ingame after 2 days??? are u kidding me? why the fuck a guy playing 1 hour a week should have the same gear as a guy farming his ass off 18 hours a day? GW2 will stay full of noobs no hardcore gamer will stay with such a game….

    • Christopher Cesario

      NERD ALERT!

    • http://www.facebook.com/mccoybrendan Brendan McCoy

Idiot. The game isn’t about grinding to get better gear. That’s for fucking masochists who don’t like fun. If you want prestige, get the cool looking shit, instead of advantages that come only from playing for longer instead of advantages from playing better.

    • Deathstar2x

“Why [...] a guy playing 1 hour a week should have the same gear as a guy farming his ass off 18 hours a day?”
Farming what exactly? You said they both have the best gear in 2 days. If they both have the same gear, why should the 18-hour-guy win?

“no sense for me to play [...]”
Sounds like Guild Wars 2 isn’t the game for you. No need to be throwing words around, just move on.

    • Spammerbam

      There’s two types of “hardcore”:

      1. Grinding hours on end to get the best gear to win over everyone else.

      2. Being competitive through skills.

      Which one are you?

    • St_Draco

Oh man such casual BS I know right… World First 90 in 5 hours.. What?  World First 90 Monk in less than 24hrs… What? Grind heroics for a day and have best gear available… What?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Steve-Lazarowitz/100000420795554 Steve Lazarowitz

Actually Guild Wars 2 is a harder core game because it relies on skill, instead of hours spent playing. If you were truly skilled, you’d beat people in the same gear as you. If you need better gear to beat them…I’m thinking you’re not as hard core as you think you are.

  • http://twitter.com/GraveProphet Brandon heat

Truly the thing that bothers me about this guildcast is they expected an authenticator at launch? No other game company in history has ever had authenticators at launch of a game, besides blizzards, whos security is the only reason Guild Wars 2 is under siege anyway.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

If people would not use passwords like pickle1 and start using passwords like G1jy$5alo9!z. They would have get hacked.

  • billbobaggins

90% of the time people get hacked because they use passwords that are easy to figure out like “123456″, have key loggers on their computers because they don’t run AV software, or click on bogus links in emails and enter their login information. Then they turn around and blame the company itself.

    • http://www.facebook.com/rasmus.nielsen.75491 Rasmus Nielsen

in GW2, it’s mostly related to hackers already knowing their passwords from past situations, and the complexity of the passwords is not the issue. But the fact that people have gone to sites with keyloggers (Such as other games Gold buyers sites) or clicked mails from gold hackers “impersonating” the company who runs whatever game. For a different game entirely, and then in GW2, they used the same email and same password as for this other game, and the hackers simply ran a program that tried all their thousands of keylogged information, and tada!

So, yeah, like you said, entirely the hackers and their own fault in 99% of the cases.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/ITHF7XKYGVXFAPCDMDJTKHLBBU Lian Wan

Although Google only provides the authenticator for iOS, Android and  BlackBerry, there are other implementations of it as well. Since there are at least 12 implementations of it by people doing things in their free time it wouldn’t be surprising if ANet could integrate it into the launcher.

Is there a reason why my post was deleted?  It’s directly related to one of the topics in this video.

  • http://www.facebook.com/GIRob1999 Robert Elmore

Shorten version: It’s not an issue about the players being careless about their account information.  ArenaNet’s account database was what was hacked, and anyone who was not able to get their Email Authentication to work (because ArenaNet’s emails were sending out broken links since day 2 of early release for approx. a week) their accounts were compromised and was subject to being stolen.  I was one of the 10′s of thousands of victims and still waiting for ArenaNet to tell me how much of my information was compromised.  I have evidence to support my statements.  Yet I’m being censored over and over.  I love Guild Wars 2, intend on continuing to play it, but I want ArenaNet to grow some balls and own up to their mistakes and stop lying about it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/mccoybrendan Brendan McCoy

ArenaNet wasn’t hacked. You’re an idiot. Some other service you have was hacked, which you would know if you actually /read/ what things ArenaNet releases. They know people’s other services got hacked because of the hundreds of thousands of attempted logins using accounts that /don’t exist/. You used a shitty service that got hacked, and, being an idiot, used the same password for your guild wars account.

      • http://www.facebook.com/GIRob1999 Robert Elmore

Funny thing is, you dont know crap about what you are talking about.  And they WERE in fact hacked.  Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2 had 2 completely separate account information, in my case.  I never posted anywhere about my Guild Wars 1 character names, because I never even got into the first one.  Which, if you are an informed gamer, part of the login information is knowing the full name of one of the characters on your account.  And if you are an informed gamer, Guild Wars 1 requires you to have at least 2 word names, possibly more than 2 words, if you do not go over their character limit.  So tell me, how could these 2 accounts get hacked on the same exact day with completely unique log in informations?  Before you start going off on people with your vulgar words, try to have some sort of defense for the senseless spouting of garbage you spew onto other’s posts.

I do not seek a flame war with anyone, it’s a fact that ArenaNet was hacked, because there is no “fan site” I’m a part of, with the exception of gamebreaker right now, because I actually like their GuildCasts.  So I ask you respectfully, do not attack me or jump to conclusions based off of your personal opinions, and lacking any bit of fact.  I, my good sir, have proof to support the above statement.  Also provided this proof as part of my BBB complaint on ArenaNet, and I’m not the only one who has filed similar reports.

Also, if this was the case, and people used the same account information for their game account information, they would have also been dumb enough to use it for their other games as well. If you do a bit of research, there is no other game, besides Guild Wars 1, that is currently having these problems in such a massive attack.

        • Jay

”do not attack me or jump to conclusions based off of your personal opinions”

Aren’t you kinda doing the same thing to ArenaNet?

          • http://www.facebook.com/GIRob1999 Robert Elmore

Not at all sir, if you read my message and how I explained that it’s impossible for my accounts to be compromised themselves.  Oh and forgot to mention, brand new computer, was less than a week old at the time of the accounts were hacked.

          • Jant0n

            >” I explained that it’s impossible for my accounts to be compromised ”
That made me laugh. While using a unique password and email make it exceptionally difficult for others to obtain them, it does not make you impervious to vulnerabilities.

        • Olymp1c

simple, your email account was comprimised.

      • Pat Hamilton

They were, and for me, if it wasn’t for the authentication checking ips, my account would be stolen as well.  I got at least 6 emails from different ips around the world trying to access my account.  I didn’t give my password out to anyone.  It was different from any other password I have used before.

      • Deathstar2x

        Delicious ad hominem sandwich, bro.

    • Jant0n

      >”It’s not an issue about the players being careless about their account information.”
In some more isolated incidents that may be true, but a great majority of the compromised accounts are caused by hackers getting information from other sites and continuosly testing it against GW2 until they get a match.

      >”I have evidence to support my statements”
If you have evidence to back up your claims why not provide it?

      >”Yet I’m being censored over and over”
If you got censored here it wasn’t for asserting your opinion. I have seen many “unique” comments that were not censored; try reading the sites rules before posting (I don’t mean that in a snippy or sarcastic way, i’m being serious).

      >”I want ArenaNet to grow some balls and own up to their mistakes and stop lying about it.”
The main problem with this is they didn’t lie. They have been very upfront with the security issues since they were discovered and have tried to spread the message in being secure on the internet (use a unique email and password, also a password that is more complex). In my opinion they have been very forward and upfront with what they are doing and plan to do.

Guild Wars 2 item color scheme:
I’m surprised Richie or Elixabeth haven’t heard about this already, the GW2 color scheme follows the rainbow color standards more closely, this has been known even from GW1 times. For a game all about aesthetics this makes total sense, that other mmorpg’s chose to follow the flawed WoW system is no one else’s fault but their own.

    • http://www.facebook.com/GIRob1999 Robert Elmore

Except Purple is the absolute best.  Mystic Quality (better than Legendary) not yet in the game yet, but you can see it on the Trading Post.

    • http://twitter.com/elixabethclaire Elisabeth Claire

GW1, with a white-blue-purple-gold-green (with red on the side) progression, used a slightly different rarity hierarchy. As to this, yes it’s based on the rainbow, but that doesn’t answer the question of why they decided to change it up. Does it make sense? Sure. Could there be other reasons? Sure.

I wouldn’t call that botting, it looks as though the person is truly there to select targets, so wide apart.  It definitely is hacking.  They aren’t teleporting though, they are hacking the jump distance of the Main Hand 1-Handed Sword ability to jump to their target.  The distance should be about 1/4th of the distance that is portraited in some of the guys jumps in that video.  I hope they reported that guy and submitted the video.

Back on topic, I wonder how many people feel Anet hit the mark with GW2 according to their manifesto or fell short of the hype about the game. I am in the later category. The “play the way you want to” motif seems to have been forgotten about completely.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rug.robertilie Rug Robert Ilie

I have 1 thing to say
STOP CALLING IT FREE TO PLAY
It’s BUY TO PLAY . FREE TO PLAY implys that the game is TOTALY FREE witch GW2 is not.
    Shame on you , shame.

    • bsqminus4ac

It’s tough because the GW2 model is so different than other MMO’s. I would argue that many games calling themselves “Free to Play” are actually “Pay to Win”.

Maybe we need to have multiple names that describe GW2:

      Buy Once Play Forever.
      Not Pay to Win.
Not Grind for Gear to Win.
      No Subscription.

I think that about covers it. :-)

It saddens to me to realize that we have no support.
If you get hacked or you loose some item due to an in game bug, there’s notthing their GM team can do about it (acording to a support ticket I got).
So think twice if you plan to farm a legendary or seriously invest your time in this game.

What happened to me is that I used 4 items at mystic forge and got a total zero as a return.

It wasnt a much of a big deal till I realize their customer support can’t make any sort of restauration… and THAT concerns me.

So – I was playing with guildees last night and I apparently DC’d.  Went to log back in and it said my account is permanently banned for botting….????  I submitted a ticket, but how does this happen!!!!!

If you are talking about Gary, then I could not disagree more.

The item color progression follows the spectrum: blue, green, yellow, orange, red, violet.

first, your netflix ad is misleading, you get a 30 day free trial of it anyway, you dont need gamebreaker to get it. i know, i have it. also, i thought this was about gw2 not fat ass brits and their butter habits. just get to the point already n stop thinking youre entertaining. first time i saw this, wont be back

is kinda hard to watch the show because the other 3 guys (not counting gary) are guild wars fan boys. I love guild wars but there are a few things that are just true and fact.  one is the lack of Exclusive to level 80 content (end game) and the fact that i find my self more often than not figuring out if blue is better than green or vice versa sinse gw changed it up. I think im gonna have to make a sticky pad and put it on my monitor just so I remember (gw2 grey>white>blue>green)

….. errrrr …. you don’t like the fact that the people on the show like Guild Wars?

I find it disturbing you joke about Condition Damage on objects, talking about realism and haven’t event stopped to think that you can’t apply burning to doors/catapults/three road blocks.

It gets REALLY annoying when you have a CD build and have to make any quest with Objects. I Love your show, just take care talking about issues w/o think about all possibilities.

One thing I found kind of funny about one of the Arenanet employee comments in this podcast was the whole 1.5% hack ratio before the blacklist addition and .1% hack ratio after.
If you look he specifically says for accounts created before, and accounts created after.
We’re one month+ into the game when this blacklist was created… how many accounts were actually created between the time of the blacklist and the time they figured out these statistics?

There is a lot more going on behind the change in those numbers besides a simple blacklist.
