It’s been a great week for fans of shellfish.

The Lost Shores event broke across Lion’s Arch unleashing the dreaded karka on the unsuspecting denizens. Reactions were somewhat mixed due to some technical issues. We discuss what exactly went on.

ArenaNet‘s Chris Whiteside responded to the weekend with a new blog post, covering not only the lessons learned from the criticism from the gaming populace, but also how Guild Wars 2 will be affected by changes coming down the pipe.

Not one to get hung up on past issues, Whiteside outlined a large number of changes, including a complete revamp of all the current dungeons and new additions to Fractals of the Mists.

The crew gets detailed on why there might be a need for changes to current dungeon encounters and just whether roles need to play an important part.

A raft of class changes came out along with the other new content, what were the big changes? Will a certain Guardian be spitting feathers?

With your viewer questions neatly rounding everything off, your regular team is on hand to answer your queries.

Joining Gary Gannon are Massively‘s Richie Procopio and Elisabeth Cardy as well as ZAM‘s Scott Hawkes for the 50th — yes, 50th! — episode of GuildCast!

Disappointed that you didn’t cover how let down Anet customers from other parts of the world felt. No matter how much notice they give, or how good the rewards are, I can’t let my son stay up untill 11pm on a school night to do a game event.

In other parts of Europe, it would have been past midnight or 1am and that gets worse further across into Asia. The australian community would have been having to get up between 3 and 5 am to take part.

I don’t remember them saying the game would be supported with new content *IF we live in the right part of the world*.

Then to discover that they had been quite happy to let people run it again in overflows, getting the best rewards yet seen in game on multiple alts, whilst other parts of the world couldn’t even experience the content once!

It has left a very sour taste for many players.

It seems to me that one time content fell into disuse for a very good reason. It alienates more of your players than it pleases, even at their peak concurrency time it probably wasn’t more than 20% of their total possible players online.

If they had run the event at multiple times for a day, it would have spread the load on their servers and built hype as word spread, maybe enticing players who otherwise weren’t fussed.

Their own precedent for a ‘one time event’ was a cinematic followed by a repeatable dungeon, that made sense, this didn’t.

I would suggest you put that feedback in the survey they sent to every GW2 player a couple of days ago about the Lost Shores event. They sent me reminders twice about the survey. I would check your spam filter on your e-mail address though, since my ANet e-mails sometimes go there.

    • theunwarshed

i like the uniqueness of one off events, but i empathize with the issue of time zone differences.  i think a happy middle ground would be to run the events once for each major time zone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/chadjacquay Chad Jacquay

I think ANet should keep PvE XP out of SPvP because of BoTs.  Its a huge problem in games like WoW where sometimes 1/2 the team is BoTs just there to get XP.

  • http://www.facebook.com/shane.cominotto Shane Cominotto

It was total bs that players not in the right time zone miss out on these events…

  • HartsHope

Scott Hawkes NAILED it concerning PVE Guilds lacking larger scale, team bonding events.

I’ve been complaining about this issue since release and even earned myself a temporary forum suspension, so im passionate about this. There is ample content for every type of player – except PVE guilds. WvW guilds thrive because of their obvious large scale and fun and organized events that they get to engage in 24/7. sPvP’ers have their tournaments. 98% of the gameworld is friendly to Soloers, hence the explosion of Bot Farmers. Dungeon Runners can PUG the hardest dungeons easily.. ya im aware of those contradictory adjectives – hardest, easily. sucks ;(.

why have my 3 PVE guilds (of mature, active paying adults) withered and died? why has my WvW guild grown and has maintained steady activity? the lifeblood of a MMORPG is its social stickiness. and nothing keeps players logging in and buying Gems more than interacting with other players and working together with friends and GUILDMATES to progress and explore the content.

Large Guild Events dont even need specialized gear rewards.. hell, my guild would love the experience of just joining together for some fun and challenging content. we would LOVE a chest that only had a nice chunk of “Influence” in it… or maybe we could unlock upgrades through these Guild Events.. something, anything to do in a PVE guild other than trading dyes and sharing crafting mats.. zzzz

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/W76UOX2IDTRMMYTPASSJDLXLRM Bob

I have no problem with them being stubborn since I’ve been there done that with guilds in other MMO’s. The only guild specific things to do is endgame raiding and I don’t want them to go that way. ANet just needs to think of a different type of activity for guilds to do.

      • Rich E.

You didnt read his post obviously. His post doesnt mention “raid” once. All he asks for is some kind of guild activity for players to bond over. “the only specific guild things to do is endgame raiding” is a completely dull imagination. But if you are so dull and STUBBORN to insist that ANYTHING over 5 players = a raid, then so be it. All guilds want right now is a reason to be in a “guild”, and if it were a “raid” it doesnt have to be the sole path of progression like in other games – THATS the key difference. not that there would actually be “raids”. It would just be another option among the many others.

“been there done that” huh… Ummm your logic is total fail. rofl well you can say that about EVERYTHING in GW2 so why not have raids for PVE guilds as well? theres sPVP is every game, done that. theres WvW in other games, done that. 5 man dungeons… seen that in every game. Soloing to 80.. been through that before… soooo wtf is your point?

      • Supercoven

I run my own business. Small company I employ 20 people. And If there is 1 thing that I’ve learned its that stubborness is NOT a virtue in business. I’m sure it works well in other aspects of life or whatever.. but certainly not in business.

not shocking that I;m also a guildleader in the games I play. I like to boss people around i guess heehe. And my guild of 12 players would love to see some kind of large event for guild’s to tackle. They struggle to find reasons to get online sometimes although they now like the idea of working for ascended gear because most are casual and would never get close to Legendaries. Heck, we’d accept if they tied the entire Guild Upgrade system to like a 10 man guild event. wouldnt care a single bit if we didnt get a single item or a single copper out of it. endgame means theres 1 path.. a oneway street towards the destination. obviously guildwars2 dont have that. this would just be another path that many players would like to travel. paying players.

    • theunwarshed

yet another “raid or die” QQ post.  did you really not know what kind of game you were purchasing?  the “peril” for ANet would be to completely turn this game into every other mmo out there.  they already caught a shit storm of displeasure (from a great many people that bought this game because its “manifesto” claimed this would be a different game) for reversing themselves on the gear treadmill issue.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/OHWQGNJD7ATU5YSO3C4BKOJQTI Learning-to-Fly

Youre dumb. this game is already a frankenstein of features taken from the standard MMOs. did you not watch the video, have you not been playing the game? As smart people already know, and as Gary, Scott, Elisabeth and Richie have discussed many times, the game already had gear progression at release. im sure you love chasing laser pointers on the carpet but tear yourself away from that for a minute to “know what kind of game you were purchasing”. Youre just another QQfreakout when someoen mentions wanting something to do in a guild that takes more than 5 people. Most PVEers would love to do something with their guild that takes as Scott Hawkes said “some type of coordination”. but hey i know you silly robots love your zerg and panic when someone mentions coordination so just forget we ever mentioned it and stop watching gamebreakertv and go back to farming zerg events. and tell your owner to stop teasing you with laser pointers ;)

        • theunwarshed

I see what you did there with the whole “laser pointer” thing…hmm, clever (not).  Listen sport, the only one “freaking out” is you with this tirade.

Gear progression during the leveling game is completely natural and to be expected.  It isn’t something that’s usually part of the discussion when it comes to the negative byproducts of adding power creep to a game at max level.  Of course, you would have to actually know something about the subject in the first place to understand that.

Anyone whose mildly awake can see what’s happening with the direction of the game.  AN is testing the “raiding” waters with their recent changes to the fundamentals of the game.  Once you ring that bell..well, it can’t be unrung.  That means that pve progression guilds will want more and more “hardcore content” that requires gating, gear progression, et al.  and GW2 will become like every other mmo that came before it.

Funny you should list Gary as one of the so-called “smart people” when he was the cast member that called Scott on the very same thing I did.  Why? Because it sounded to him like Scott was going down that road as well.  Perhaps Gary was convinced by Scott’s fumbling tap dance routine to explain away what he really meant, but I wasn’t.

    • http://www.facebook.com/stradus.woods Stradus Woods

I am hoping they don’t unless it an out door event made to scale for that kinda stuff.  An kinda of gate 6+ pve stuff would disappoint me. I got a prefect set of 5player friends right now I don’t want to have to grow that group because of content.

  • http://gameldar.posterous.com Gameldar

I’m with Scott – I spent around 2 hours running around the island for phase 2… and had no idea what there was to do. You got sent on a boat and then there didn’t seem to be any continuation once you got to the island. In that couple of hours I ran into 1 DE and even that didn’t seem to have much of a purpose apart from leading me to the camp down in the south (there was no follow up).

Maybe there was more if you managed to start when the phase actually started – but like so many of the comments here I was not up at 4 am to take part.

I don’t mind the idea of ‘one-time events’ that change the world as long as the one time is more like the Mad King event – that it is a ‘one-time’ in the sense that it will only happen once, but the parts of it need (at least) a 24 hour duration.

  • http://www.facebook.com/oneniisama Bear Powell

Take off the kid gloves and dodge less.

  • theunwarshed

So, basically Scott wants gated “holy trinity” raids for guilds.  I’m sure we can pull up some “old” pre launch video on him praising GW2 for not having trinity roles, no gated content, and dynamic events for large group play.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/OHWQGNJD7ATU5YSO3C4BKOJQTI Learning-to-Fly

obviously audio comprehension eludes you. maybe if you took a shower; hygiene is a staple of an intelligent civilization.

Hawkes clearly states that he enjoys the events of the Fractals dungeons that challenge players to share “tasks” and “responsibilities”, rather than sit there mashing buttons and avoiding red circles and rallying players who fail to. He used the unfortunate term “role” and as we all know, that brings out the failtrolls like yourself and your kneejerk panic reactions. What he talks about are not “DPS” roles, not “TANK” role, not “HEALER” role. as he said three times… but i know you’ve got all that wax buildup in your ears so go warsh yourself and youll hear better.

What players want are dungeon mechanics that are more complex and fun and based on teamwork. teamwork is not 5 individuals dodging red circles against bosses with a billion hit points. Hawkes uses the example of the Cliffside Fractal and breaking the seals on the Colossus and the mechanic of sharing the responsibility of carrying the Corrupted Hammer. So you gonna try to reply with “Carrying the Corrupted Hammer” is a part of the “Holy Trinity”??!! rofl. u fail.

And clearly Arenanet sees this as well.. because they’ve gotten great responses about the Fractals and so are revamping both Story modes and Explorables. duh.. so go take your failtroll faillogic into the shower with you

    • Supercoven

Thats not what he said. He wants, like many many paying PVEers, more events with complex things to do other than standing around dodging red circles. Like breaking the seals event. Did you not listen? they all laughed how stuff like killing dragons allows you to stand around and chat about the weather. thats not fun.

hope arenanet doenst listen to you easymode losers that want to guzzle soda and pizza while you play with one hand. And btw I can bring up old quotes and videos of Arenanet bragging on how they want to challenge Warcraft for the top and have broad appeal and have something for every gamer other than the deadend of raiding. endgame means theres just 1 path.. a oneway street towards the destination.
obviously guildwars2 dont have that. this would just be another path, another route
that many players would like to travel. paying players. and they sure as heck wont get anywhere near Warcraft listening only to easymode diehards like you.

      • theunwarshed

that is what he was eluding to and Gary even called him on it.  Scott then went on to tap dance around the issue.  adding mechanics to events or dungeons or whatever content is all well and good and has nothing to do with these specific comments from Scott.  besides, there’s plenty of “roles” required of everyone.  everyone is required to bring survivability, control, dps, downed state revives, etc.  AN specifically stated they didn’t want dedicated anything in this game.  they didn’t want some guy standing off in a corner pulling on a chain the entire encounter in order to cleanse an enrage or whatever.  they don’t want a heal bot or rdps casting unmolested in the back of the raid.

as far as “challenging Warcraft” AN, as they originally stated in their “manifesto” wanted to challenge Warcraft (as you put it) by providing a different kind of game experience than the standard mmo paradigm of the past decade, not by copying WoW.  all of a sudden we’re now seeing power creep, vertical scaling, and a disturbing pattern of game design reversal.  i’m merely pointing out that members of the cast are starting to reverse themselves on these issues.

and what’s with the “paying players” comment you keep slinging about?  we all payed for this game, which was advertised as a b2p game.  not sure where your implied distinction is going.

        • Rich E.

thats certainly not what he was eluding at all. Gary completely misunderstood him and Scott cleared up the misunderstanding. Hence they all laughed about their group and standing around chatting about the weather while they did the boss. there are far too many events and bosses that are either zerg stupid loot pinatas or fall asleep easy to the point the group starts talking about mundane crap to pass the time. and Scott’s point was that they were enjoying the new direction Fractals was taking with the emphasis on teamwork. thats teamwork that is far more complex than what you mention which is bascially everyone has the shared responsibility of surviving and rallying down players and dps’ing in the meantime… ya got it. every fight has that duh.

and its painfully obvious that the game lacks social stickiness. ive been apart of 3 PVE guilds – each began as active and then just completely died. i had 22 players in my contact list.. i see 1 or 2 now and rarely. Why? because there is no content designed for PVE guilds, content that can create bonds and keep players hyped and interested and having fun and a sense of loyalty, like there is for WvW guilds. more active players = more gem buying customers.obviously people arent buying gems and im willing to bet my child’s trust fund that Arenanet’s metrics are making them worried. hence, theyre huge revamp theyre currently working on.

and to all those red herrings you talk about.. im just so tired of this silly panic about gear progression. there already was a clear one at release and if you didnt care to “vertically progress” to Exotic level then why the hell are you worrying about Ascended? power creep, rofl. hilarious. get more melodramatic please

    • Spammerbam

”So, basically Scott wants gated “holy trinity” raids for guilds.”

This is what YOU are interpreting it as.
Not sure if many others would agree with you =

    • ScottHawkes

I didn’t say that at all.
I was pretty clear that what needs to happen is that the events need a role for each player to take at separate times so you arte not all just doing the same thing while happening to be in the same room. There needs to be a greater variety of engagement with the boss and each other. That isn’t necessarily due to pre-set profession roles, but rather what the encounter is asking each member of the group to do at different times across the fight.
I liked the colossus encounter because it asks the party to switch what each person is doing at specific times and to work together. I’d like to see more encounters where this happened to at least that degree.
And sorry, I don’t tapdance, I just don’t have the ankles for it.

      • http://www.facebook.com/kevin.cox.5817 Kevin Cox

There’s even a minor example of what Scott wants present in World of Warcraft.

Atramedes is a blind dragon raid boss (I love the concept of a blind dragon btw). Players generate individual levels of sound during the fight and if a players sound bar reaches a certain threshold, then Atramedes zones in on that player and kills him. To prevent this from happening a player or group of players on a rotation must ring one of the 8 gongs situated around the room. Once a gong is used, it is destroyed but when it IS used, it disorientates Atramedes and resets everyone’s sound bar. So a balance must be achieved. When is ok to ring a gong? When is it not?
This is a task that has no bearing on group roles but makes the fight more interesting. We already have boss mechanics that down players in one hit (Hi, Kohler). Instead of just timing a dodge, why not introduce mechanics that mitigate damage or prevent the attack altogether?

For example it’d be awesome if everyone were to time their dodge correctly so that when Lt. Kohler sends out his hooks prior to a spin, they instead latch onto a wall and he’s momentarily CC’d for a few seconds. The length of time he’s stuck would be dependent on how many people he manages to pull in. If he misses all five, he’s stuck for five seconds (and hilarious “struggling” animations ensue). If he misses 4 then he’s stuck for 4 seconds but he still inflicts massive damage to that unlucky player via the spin (he’s still locked in place). I dunno, that’s just a loose example sans any refinement but you get the idea.

You don’t need roles to have interesting encounters.

Open world bosses however I can’t see much more being done too though, scott. :(
They have to be approachable by everyone and their status as an open world boss makes it hard to balance without making the casuals cry, “THIS IS TOO HARD.”

Hardcore players probably couldn’t care less. lol

Yes! Finally someone notices. The Zhaitan fight to me was pressing 2-2-2-2-2-2-2. I have to admit, it could’ve been a more epic fight instead of just shooting cannons at the damn dragon.

This fight could have been so much cooler. That model almost made me crap my pants when I saw the writhing mouth-dragons. The scene was set for a really magnificent fight, but it just completely dropped off after that. Wah.

I don’t care if you remove the openings from the shows, but if you do, make a list of all the openings where we can download/listen to them. Some people like me don’t know where they’re from, but the opening gets us pumped up each time.

  • dawolv

I don’t agree with the grind issue:

You only need to do the “grind” for Ascended Items when you’re doing high enough Fractals (which compared to the Legendary Grind is a Joke) and if you need about 100 Exotics to break down into ectos, look at how many Exotics you get as rewards from Fractals after, idk.. Level 10.
I’m only Lvl 4 as of now and I already found a good share of money and High Level Items.
250 Ectos can be bought with Gold as well you know…

I’d wait a month before judging the costs. Especially now since everything has a higher chance to drop Exotics.

  • Krzysztof Kotarba

I play GW2 and I must say I miss trinity… My warrior feels kinda useless I like sword and board but it seems like weak dps class.

I’m rly amused what AN doing, I’m old wow player and blizz don’t do anything like this and new content in wow is just patch and open doors in some place.

  • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Good show.  It was interesting to see the hosts change up their patter on Legendary weapons. They uses to stress Legendary’s were optional because they did not have better stats than weapons you can easily obtain at max level.  Now that Legendary weapons “always” equal the best tiered weapons in the game, it’s worth reconsidering a Legendary weapons gear value.

During the final one time event, I noticed if your character died, the servers had time to catch up with your client, eliminating any server lag.  Once you were rezed, all the formerly “invisible” Karka would properly draw on the screen and input lag would disappear.  The longer your character stayed alive, you would see more server based lag making the game unplayable.  This explains why one of the hosts didn’t see any lag during the final event.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Robert-Caliolo/100003765889295 Robert Caliolo

When talking about Boss mechaincs. Bosses should “Learn” from the process of the Boss fights.
Example the pouring of the lava onto the boss in the one Fractal. at various % of the fight the Boss should “Learn” what is going on. It should now allow itself to be lured under the lava. It should have just stood still and have the players just beat on it for another %amount , then maybe run it under the lava again for another % of damage , then a new phase occurs for the Boss and it’s style of attack changes.
AION has a nice Boss phasing system for Boss fights, Rift has a good system, Any and all Boss fights should have various stages where the Boss fight changes and goes into a new style of fight other then Tank and spank style of repitition and just beating down HP.

    • Ian Mansfield

good ideas I felt the same, thats why I was somewhat impressed with the whole Karka adaption or shell removal but it wasnt really enough.

  • protrolly

IF this game does the one time event like they did they will go like swtor will a loss of players.

    • Matt Steigely

      Yea, no.

  • Jado Cast

I’m a pretty big GW fan and have been for years, but I have to admit, this event was not Anet’s finest moment, far from it.  I hope they take the feedback and really improve future releases so not to make the same mistakes.

I also agree on the Boss mechanics, they really need to be more creative and rely less on the boss having tons of HP.

  • Ian Mansfield

Id like to say I know a bit about Anets character and threw GW2 beta alone you can tell they really do care about player feedback and they take things into account. I have full faith in them, and Im excited for wintersday :D I understand not doing anything in January or February but I hope they are discouraged at creating monthly updates… gotta support them as much as we can though they must be on a tight budget.

  • ScottHawkes

What I meant was this: I think the game lacks large, organized PVE content. Raids are usually what other MMOs have used to provide that. That doesn’t mean ANet have to do the same and it doesn’t have to include a gear race. But without content to make people feel they need to be in a guild and build those relationships that all long term MMO players have experienced, the longevity of the game due to a lack of social stickiness will suffer, in my opinion. Was that tap dance free enough for you?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Bergevin-Jr/1393526370 Jim Bergevin Jr

Well said. Even GW1 had the Elite Areas for guilds to come together for. That was one of the things that I found lacking in the new game – people grouped up and have fun clearing instances together. Here, again, at lot is just zerg-festing or a drive thru of players passing along. I made a lot of great friends in my first MMO experience because of it, and have enjoyed diving into more MMOs because of it. How many times have people said they don’t necessarily like the game they are playing but enjoy the experience because they are sharing it with a group of friends.

    • theunwarshed

funneling players into fractals (or even “raid-sized” content) isn’t the answer to what you’re claiming to be missing with this game.  invalidating earlier content, turning the beautiful world they’ve created into a ghost town in most areas isn’t the answer.  turning this game into WoW isn’t the answer.

this half-assed vertical progression scheme they’re test driving isn’t going to satisfy the raider sub culture and it’s alienating the horizontal progression crowd this game was advertised to.  so, by attempting to satisfy both camps they’ll eventually lose both.  it’s important for a game to have an identity and market.  they’re now attempting to expand into another market, but at the expense of their first targeted market.  how many mmo have to fail hard before devs understand that you can’t out-WoW, WoW!

i don’t think i misunderstood Scott’s initial verbal/non verbal response to Gary in the cast.  it was pretty clear to me that he was referring to pve progression guilds when he said, “this game lacks social stickiness”.  my “social” guild has no problem finding fun things to do together in this game.  sometimes you have to make your own fun, ya know?  having said that, i have no problem with AN improving/adding mechanics/content to the open world events/boss fights and the same goes for dungeons, etc.  what i don’t want to see happen is where this game appears to be headed.

      • ScottHawkes

What was clear to you, wasn’t what I said. Instead of interpreting what you think I meant, just take my word on what I mean. I think that the game lacks content which provides a cohesion for guilds in PvE. Does this mean raiding and vertical gear treadmill, gated progression in other games? Sure. Does it have to be that way in Guild Wars 2? No.
I’m not calling for GW2 to become WoW. WoW does WoW rather well and I’m pretty tired of games doing a copy paste response to a business model from 2004.
What I was hoping for was GW2′s version of content regarding interesting, complex and challenging encounters and activities for large guilds in PvE. I don’t think they currently exist. When those like myself brought up that specific question in Beta, we were informed that the multi-pronged assault on Arah and the need to perform various tasks at once to unlock it would meet those needs.
        It doesn’t.
If you think ArenaNet is heading in the WoW model of content direction and you have issues with that, then fine. I can understand that point of view completely.
You just don’t have to label me as the person calling for that, when I’m not in any shape or form, then imply I am really by saying I’m just avoiding using that terminology — but it’s what I actually mean.
You have a valid concern, just don’t put words in my mouth to back it up.

        • theunwarshed

           okay Scott, peace :)

perhaps an example of what you’re talking about would shed some light on what your point really is?  because, it really sounds to me that what you’re asking for is something exclusive to guilds, that’s challenging and requires “raid-like precision” of its players in order to succeed.  to me, this sounds an awful lot like instanced raiding, where the guild is segregated from the rest of the server.  otherwise, how is it any different than open world DE’s?

before you respond, i know these events mechanics aren’t on the level of requiring razor sharp unit cohesion, and i agree that in most cases AN needs to retool them with more challenging mechanics and make them more interesting.  however, i don’t remember the Arah example you gave was ever meant to be content specific to guilds.

i have equal parts curiosity and trepidation for what AN has in store specific to guilds, because (believe it or not) i actually am in favor of more guild features/content separate from raiding.

People say that Anet doesn’t know boss mechanics. I remember a few of the boss mechanics were great. The tree, the gueyser with the rocks, the rockslide, those thermal vents. Those were fun, the part that I found tiring was whatcking on hitpoints and beating down reinforcements. They need more mechanics like the environment stuff and less hitpoints.
