Good podcast. Enjoyable discussion particularly about the gear plateau.

I wonder if anyone remembers how WoW originally talked about doing thise with gear early in its development before they lost some of their core group and Kaplan and Chilton took over. It will be good to see that finally implemented in the MMO genre.

I got the Beta Key from EB games Australia, I followed the steps to gain access to the beta however there seems to be a problem. The problem is that they sent me a E-mail, saying congrats on purchasing GW2 and they would send me a link to download the client shortly. However they still have not send me the link.

Anyone know why?

I think ANet have come up with a nice balanced crafting system. Your system caters to certain type of player, specifically you, which is fine. However for most of us, the system that you suggest is more work than it's worth. I'd rather focus on my combat proficiency, than worry about if I'll still be able to craft items for a profit next week.

GW2 seems to have a nice balance of being casual where it should be, and having challenge in place where it matters. If you want a crafting game like that, you're better off crafting things in real life... Maybe make some money off it too.

Gold sinks are important, and having a tax on the people who usually make the most money (ie. crafters/farmers), only makes sense to me. I'll be getting taxed through progression raiding explorable dungeons, by using repair costs ANet for a gold sink for basically every type of player.

For a multi-player game, I'd go with the first system (limiting the total number of skill points and redistributing them automatically when people craft something). The second system would work well on a single-player game, but on an MMO it would just give a big advantage to people with more free time (because they'd be able to keep more professions * maxed out).

In a way, that approach (letting people adjust their skill points according to their preferred professions and playing style) would be more similar to the way the game handles player attributes (where you can pick between gear with different stats, but you can't maximize every single stat at the same time).

Letting everyone max out every profession seems to go completely against the spirit of GW2, which is all about making people cooperate and complete each other. Weird decision. I guess they don't want to delay the game, and opted for a simplistic crafting system so they didn't need to worry about balancing it.

* By "professions" I mean crafting professions, not "classes".
