Guild Wars 2 Mission System Details - GuildCast Ep 62 (Video)

This week on GuildCast the gang discusses the Guild Wars 2 mission system, trading post improvements and loot.

Colin Johanson spoke to MMORPG.com earlier this week about the Guild Wars 2 mission system — as well as other things like story.  According to Johanson:

The system allows people in a guild to work together to unlock guild upgrades that allow them to go on missions together. These missions can be kicked off by the specific guild that has researched that mission, but once they are activated, anyone can jump in and participate to help the guild finish the mission if they wish.

According to Johanson, there are specific parts of each mission within the Guild Wars 2 mission system that can only be completed by the guild that started them.  This should ease any fears that people might have about their guild just being used to get the mission started.  He also believes that the system will be a useful tool for guilds looking to recruit new members. As people join a guild on a mission, the guild — ideally — would be able to use it to determine if they stand out enough to invite them into the guild.

Preview comes to the trading post!

The February patch will be here in less than a week and it’s bringing an important change to the trading post. Yes!  You will finally be able to try on that armor before buying it. Let’s admit it… No one likes buying an outfit without seeing how it looks — even if it’s a virtual one. But, soon this will no longer be a problem for Guild Wars 2 players.

Loot for champions.

Players have been complaining that there have been issues regarding loot drops from veteran and champion creatures and Colin Johanson took to Reddit to address the issue.  According to Johanson, once the issue is fixed, all champion mobs will always drop one blue or better item.  However, there is a chance that veterans will still not drop anything.

All this, plus viewer questions…

And as always, if you missed last week’s episode, you can check it out here.  And, be sure to check back next week, perhaps we’ll even have more information on the Guild Wars 2 mission system or even an update on loot drops.

I had a deluge of work coupled with not sleeping for a couple of days so afraid I had to be rubbish and duck out. Not that the terrific trio needed me anyways.

I think guild recruiting won’t mean squat if they don’t expand the cap on the guild roster!!! Lights Out in SoR is already maxxed at 500, how could we recruit if we can’t fit anymore in?

  • Phil

Just watching this for the first time atm. The crew says the Living Story hasn’t changed week by week… it has. Each week since launch it has changed… slightly.

    • http://twitter.com/RichieProcopio Richie Procopio

Last week we spoke about them adding new NPCs and buildings to the refugee camps with some new dialogue options (rats, etc). We said nothing has been added since last week. What’s new that we’re missing from one week ago?

      • Phil

The refugee coordinator’s dialogue changed on Monday in both cities. Not much but something :P

BTW, finished some now, was great :D First time in a while I haven’t watch live. Just slipped my mind O_o

        Apparently nit-picker’s content.

Veteran’s should drop at least a crafting material every time. with a % chance to drop whatever else be it blue to exotic. But should drop a crafting mat at minimum.
Champions should also fall into this catagory and have the minimum blue or better added into that minimum crafting mat.

    • RazrVII

I see where you’re going with the MF, but I disagree in a way. MF should be removed from gear completely. Keep the stat in-game through food, guild banners, mf potions, etc etc. The real problem with MF isn’t so much that it’s incredibly OP as a farming stat but that it actually effects party/guild members that want to dungeon-like content. Just my 2cents

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

If you put MF on all gear, then there is no point to put it on any gear.

  • theunwarshed

magic find stat on gear is the most ill-conceived idea ever!  just mentioning it boils my blood, arrgh!! you look at a lot of design decisions in this game and think, “brilliant” and then there are things like mf gear and you want to facepalm AN.

  • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Lol, really with the title.  It really show how much GamebreakerTV is in the tank for Guild Wars 2.

If this had been any other MMO, GamebreakerTV would be all over the fact that most of the features should have been available at launch.

    - Trading post gear preview, should have been their at launch.
    - Loot drop bugs, other MMO’s would have been savaged over that.
    - Culling getting worse, other MMO’s would be crucified if that happened.
    - Magic Find stats, there would have been no nice, nice talk for other MMO’s.

It really is amazing to watch how much GG handles Guildcast with kid gloves. But then Elizabeth and Richie seem like really nice people.

    • Chris Catone

Lemme guess, TOR player?  He does give that game a lot of shit on the Republic (though he’s been relatively tame the last couple weeks).

      • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

No, I raid alot in WoW.  But, played about the same amount of SWTOR and GW2.  I liked both games, but SWTOR is a mess at end game and GW2 didnt show me enough to keep me leveling and grinding for skins.

My criticism is more directed to GamebreakerTV as a whole.

    • Revanhavoc

But the intro banner says 2013 now D.

Can’t you be happy about that?!?

That’s all thanks to you man! XD

      • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

I know, I was feeling so bad for Gary.  He kept saying 2012 show after show.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1260066056 Steven Diaz

This is one of the very few times I agree with you.  While I didn’t like TOR, I disliked GW2 just as much.  GW2 is a beautiful game, but a polished turd is still a turd.  I hate to put it that way because favorite MMO after SWG was GW1, but they took too many steps back rather than continuing to develop GW1 further and push the boundaries.  The only thing they really kept from the first was the B2P motto, aside from that they dropped the rich story missions, the ability to customize skills, and just about everything else.  Heck, the focus of GW2 is loot, even more so than most other games.  End game in GW2 is ONLY loot.  You’re working to get skins, that’s still loot.  The FUN aspect in dungeons is non-existent and the fun in the world eventually dies out after you realize that everyone else is just in the same area farming the same events for currency to buy loot.  Not saying that loot is a bad thing, but there isn’t much else to do.  Jump puzzles and world exploration shouldn’t be part of the main course, that’s a nice add-on but that shouldn’t be a “if you don’t want loot or an incredibly busted PvP zerg system, just go do jump puzzles or explore the world.  There’s so much content, no idea how you could get bored after 2-3 months!”.

Also, the whole “if you’re bored, just come back later, it’s free” comment wreaks of pointlessness.  An MMO shouldn’t be boring after such a short time and after being in 4 guilds (two of which had over 70 people) go completely empty from either people not wanting to play or moving to servers with better WvW stats, I’m completely done.  The game is bland in its social aspects as well, nothing really there to push the community to be tight and really get to know one another.  I like the combat’s action-y feeling but I don’t play games just for combat.  If that were the case I’d still be playing DCUO.  I’m happy that people are enjoying this, but I require more from my MMO and I refuse to lower my standards.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Bergevin-Jr/1393526370 Jim Bergevin Jr

I do find it ironic that in the 8 or so months that GW2 has been out, it really hasn’t bee taken to task on things other than the guesting system. Nearly every other MMO I have somewhat followed have been ragged for such things – SWTOR being hit the hardest. There is a lot that fell flat when you compare what GW2 was and is to the manifesto Anet put out – a lot of people I talked to in other games pointed to that as the reason they were hyped about GW2 and then left disappointed.

    • http://twitter.com/RichieProcopio Richie Procopio

I’m invited to be on the show because of my interest and knowledge of the game. I’m not asked to go hard or soft on GW2, merely express my opinions and feelings on it. There are flaws about GW2 and I’m not afraid to mention and analyze them on the show like I do every week.

However, I’m not going to just berate and bash the game because despite it’s faults, I’m enjoying it immensely and I’m willing to be patient for fixes and changes.

Comparing the tone of GuildCast to other shows is hard. The games are different and the hosts are different. But I appreciate you saying that I seem nice, that means my clever ruse is working because I’m actually quite a meany.  :P

      • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Hi Richie.  My observation is based on GamebreakerTV as a whole.

Where I got a chuckle was the title “Getting Better All the Time.”  Which seem to be based on future patch notes/interviews and not actual fixes in the game.

Comparing the tone of the shows is easy, just follow Gary and the Gamebreaker titles/graphics.  Also, note if anyone on the show is good at calling Gary on his antics. I do find Elizabeth is good at checking Gary with her disapproving looks.  They guys on the Republic show, don’t have a chance of keeping Gary in check and all the hosts on Legendary have a high level of sarcasm in their coverage.

        • St_Draco

First, you seem a little mad about this.  You’ve made what? 4-5 comments on the site so far.
You hit the points here as to why you see what you see.  Each show has different personalities. If Lore/Mike B/Olivia were on GuildCast you would better believe there would be more sarcasm and greater swings in criticism and praise. If you took Justin and Larry and put them on GuildCast you would see more of Gary going off on crap and focusing on the bad things.  And if you put the Liz and Richie on either of the other shows you would see a much more reined in Gary.  Different shows, different personalities. On top of this there are different producers for each show.

And then there is the graphics and title tags, these are used to stir people into watching and commenting. All three of these are mission accomplished. Yeah you can say it is sensationalism and baiting, but the truth is that it works, just look how many times you have commented and others have commented. If you don’t like it, then stop commenting, don’t visit the site, don’t go to the live shows and send them an email about it.

          • Nick Cattane

Dularr is a step down from Sharuko (sp?) – He trolls 90% of the time, but does occassionally try to put some sensible thoughts together.  For the most part though he’s very big into wow.  The difference between ourselves and players like him is that while I don’t personally play wow anymore, I don’t despise it nor wish the end of it – both games (GW2 and wow) have rather healthy populations, are thriving in their own regard, and quite frankly – are completely different games that offer very different styles of play and consequently an entirely different feel.

    • St_Draco

I’m going to comment on the 4 “issues” you have listed.

-Trading post preview – minor quality of life issue. Preview is available in the game. You can preview from vendors, from in game links, as well as coded links.  On top of that there are galleries on the official wiki for all the items. Not game breaking.

-Loot drop bug. This sucks, but due to the nature of GW2 gearing and the fact that it has been there since launch, it hasn’t had a huge impact on game play.  Bosses/Champions don’t have dedicated/unique loot like in other games.  You can get your gear with the stats you want from different places. There isn’t a “must have item” that only drops from 1 encounter or boss like in WoW.  If there was then this bug would be game breaking, but there isn’t so it is not.

-Culling. This is a known issue in every game that has large scale combat. “Getting Worse” is a perceptual thing and if the cast doesn’t see it, then they can’t responsibly comment.  Would you rather they be irresponsible and go on rants about something they have never experienced? To add to this, ANet has actually admitted to the issues and have been communicating their steps and process to addressing the issue. If ANet had ignored it, like other developers tend to do, then you better believe these guys would be all over them, kind of like how they harped on Guesting in the past.

-Magic Find, see my post above, but the TL:DR is the gear isn’t the issue, the players are and they are in every game.

  • Rich E.

Gary is perceptive in seeing that the upcoming guild system will do very very little to “create prestige” for guild’s. On my server, there are guilds that constantly drop banners, constantly unlock dungeons like Arah, etc. Nobody cares because its easy and routine and any random handful of players can do it while theyre half asleep. Btw.. im in one of those guilds. We enjoy doing it right now because we are bored with the PVE and its the only thing we can think of that we can do with more than 5 of our players and is NOT another dungeon run…. ugh please im so bored of these snoozefests.

And our vent chat is full of the same fear that Mr. Procopio has voiced.. that these systems appear very gimmicky, very fluffy, very routine and as thrilling as doing dailies…

I like the flavor events like jump puzzles. theyre fun to do as a diversion once and a while. But its a CRYING SHAME that such a fun combat and character design system is wasted on such a button mashy zergfest PVE content. And the gameworld is sooo evocative and gorgeous and intense looking.. yet the gameplay is soooo lame and easy. ugh, its really frustrating thinking of what this game could be. Keep the easier content, please. But please add something for us bored players that want more of a challenge. WE DONT EVEN F’ING CARE ABOUT LOOT. we just want something more.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/KMMYFK5MJ2APHGWIL2MEKPH3AM the_founder

yup. GW2 looks badass and mature. Plays like a pixar disney movie.

get ready for the kiddies to flame u with “stfu you got Fractals 30 if you want challenge!!!”

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1260066056 Steven Diaz

Isn’t it incredibly ironic that in a game where loot is NOT the focus, the ONLY focus is loot?  This is why I quit GW2.  GW1  had so many side quests and soooo much more story content.  When you explored, you REALLY explored and you also felt immersed because all the quests (sub or main) added to the world.  If you didn’t care about story, there still were more quests and missions that had a lot of variety and different mechanics to test player skills.  What we have now is a very polished themepark that’s missing the themepark aspect and has no other redeeming qualities.
While not everyone enjoyed GW1, it really isn’t about that, it’s about the fact that they took a lot of steps back and created a game that feels more like an arcade game rather than an in-depth game with deep and rich content on all fronts.  Everything feels arcade-y.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Bergevin-Jr/1393526370 Jim Bergevin Jr

The thing that gets me is the statement they made several times about taking what we loved about GW1 and adding to it in GW2. Sadly, nearly nothing I loved about GW1 is in GW2, and what is there is basically tacked on generic MMO tropes – the stuff that only a minority of the GW1 playerbase complained was lacking in the original game.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1260066056 Steven Diaz

I completely agree, it’s like they didn’t understand what made GW1 so special.

  • Krzysztof Kotarba

GuildCast deserves own intro and music… so long show and still nothing

    • Chris Catone

If Gamebreaker wanted, I’d totally reinstall all my music shit and do it.  I’ve actually had ideas about incorporating a fair-use amount of the GW theme into the stock GB music.

I dare yall to dare me.

  • EduardoPaperShaper

Im really hopeful that the new guild missions will put the “Guild” back in “Guild Wars 2″. *rips his heart of of his chest* Here’s my heart Arenanet! dont crush it on the feb 26 update.

  • Chris Catone

I realize that the champion fix has nothing to do with my issues with zerg DEs and veterans.  If you’re not in a group during those, it’s sometimes really difficult to get kill credit even in serker and 30 in pow/prec.  The champion thing is something at least.

  • Nick Cattane

Really surprised at how many negative posts there are below… Fact is we all paid approximately $60.00 for a game that has provided well over 300 hour of game play for average base users (I’m around 1000).  While the game launch was not perfect, Anet has been making right decision after right decision constantly improving the game, correcting necessary features, and listening to it’s user base.  Until there’s a step that they take that truly is backwards, I don’t see any reason to complain.  All these features, and implementations are slowly turning GW2 into my favorite MMO of all time.  I think it’s fair to say most people think GW2 has a great base, but is simply missing some of the finer luxuries we’ve all grown acustomed to in other AAA titles.  My advice, just be patient, and keep voicing your opinions for change on their forums – Anet definitely is listening.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

The comments really shouldn’t be a surprise,  Gamebreaker really gives Arenanet alot of cover and quickly brushes off any criticism of the game.

Not sure where the constant improvements are at, other than features that should have be in at launch.

Not sure where Arenanet listens any better than any other publisher.   The PVE base was not looking for a gear progression and PvP wanted an esport from the beginning.

The community seems to be about the same as other MMOs, unwilling to discuss the merits of their game and quick to throw out insults if you don’t think GW2 is the second coming.

      • Nick Cattane

We can go in circles all day if you’d like.

      • Chris Martin

It’s clear by self admission that you are “not sure” on most things then… that’s good. Thanks for clearing that up for us!

  • St_Draco

MAgic Find gear is not as big an issue as people are making it.  The gear it self is only marginally worse than Berserker’s or Rampager’s gear. The stat that is lost is often a stat that is minor in most player’s builds. It has very little impact and can easily be made up for by solid trait builds, use of utilities, and positioning. In fact there is no way to tell if someone is running magic find, except for food/potion buffs and sigil buffs. The problem isn’t the gear.

The problem is the players who gravitate to the gear. These are the same players who will leech and afk through any other content in any other game.  They are the people who run LFR in the easiest to find/random gear that gets them in and then do the minimum to get credit. They are the same people who /follow and AoE spam in BGs. If you take MF gear out of the game, you are still going to have the leeches and “badie” players.

And no, I don’t run MF gear, although I have experimented with it in the past and I didn’t feel I got much benefit from it. Plus it does not fit in with the build/playstyle I run on most of my characters.

  • http://www.facebook.com/oneniisama Bear Powell

Guild Missions at the moment sound like they are really pushing you into larger guilds. So, for the moment it doesn’t sound like a good idea. We’ll just have to wait and see.

  • http://twitter.com/thavleifrim nathan law

i saw the culling ‘low res model’ for the first time in WvW the other day, it was a black silhouette of human in a standard T position used for model creation, about 10 seconds later it transformed into a charr.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Did the black silhouette just appear or did it move into view?

      • http://twitter.com/thavleifrim nathan law

It was at the spawn when i spawned into the map, so i guess neither.
