GuildCast 24: ArenaNet Says No May Guild Wars 2 BWE

So, what are you doing this weekend?

Not playing Guild Wars 2, that’s what!

Just before GuildCast got up and running, the inimitable Martin Kerstein broke the news that new hardware implementation was being carried out before the next BWE, which means no frolics in Tyria in the now 50% less merry month of May.

What does this new hardware mean for the next BWE and how does it reflect on ArenaNet‘s response to the testing so far?

We mull it over while sulking.

But only for a little bit, as there’s too much news to get too sullen!

Mike O’Brien thinks that microtransactions are pretty straightforward to make work. Are the continuing fears of some an indication ArenaNet is unaware of the dangers? According to O’Brien, Guild Wars 2 has RMT nailed down pretty well. We talk about why he’s so confident.

He also spoke about consoles again, is the fact that this topic continues to be addressed an obvious sign that something is on the way? And is GW2 really that suited for cross platform play?

Christopher Lye certainly thinks that designers should be taking risks, we talk about the current state of MMOs and why it is still perceived as a genre. Will GW2‘s evolutionary step lead to more inventiveness in MMO design?

There’s a lot to talk about, so join us to keep warm in this winter of our BWE discontent. The hot topics are covered by our regular team of Massively’s Richie “Bogotter’ Procopio and Elisabeth Cardy along with GAMEBREAKER’s Scott Hawkes and Gary Gannon.

Keep your chin up! It can’t be all bad, at least you can jump into another monster edition of GuildCast!

I personally don’t want to see this on a console, and if they do, make them seperate game play experiences. They are different mediums of gaming and thus can’t be equated to have equal game play quality or quantity.

  • http://twitter.com/Dentrius Den

About the VoIP: there is a slider for VoIP ducking witch is how much the in game sound has to lower when someones talking in Vent, TS etc.

Tested it and my game went quieter when in picked up a skype call.

    • P V

I was about to type the same thing even tho I didnt experience what you said my master volume is low always. Teamspeak3 has a similar plugin  which comes with the download.

VoIP ducking was mentioned in chat during the live stream, why they didn’t pick up on it is anybody’s guess.

Can’t remember the link (sorry), but I’ve seen a screenshot of someone running GW2 in Ubuntu under wine. I would think that at least makes it possible on Macs as well. That all being said, yes. that’s what I was thinking too at first, but Anet has mentioned consoles in the past.

    • Camzillasmom

Works alright on Bootcamp on Mac OS. Our complete household is PC free. Shame we have to install Windows just to play GW2. Just doesnt feel right. Would love to have it running on Lion…

  • mcsumo

I teamed up with many different players for various heroics in SWTOR. 90% of them I never saw or heard from again and only 1 made it onto my friendlist.

The GW2 way doesn’t make you any more or less sociable, but not having to worry about KSing or losing out on loot, meant a much more relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

There are still benefits to teaming up, which the more social players will enjoy. Such as being able to see where each person is on the map and a health bar to know if they need help.

  • dawolv

Richie, you said you’d like to see content that required organized play for big groups.
I’m not hostile to WoW or nothin’, but I also don’t play it. What exactly, in your opinion, is “organzied group play” in WoW’s raids?
Because, from what I understand of it, the “organization” part takes place before entering the instance (group selection, hail to the trinity) and once your group is in everyone is doing skill rotations and basically doing “their thing”.

As to wether this will be included in GW2 I would think they wont go with it.
Just look at the mess a 5 player instance is already. All the colaboration,m cross profession combos and using your teammates skills to your advantage rely on ground targeted spells in this game, since they simplified the UI. Good luck finding the ground target spell you want to combo with when 24 other players throw all their shizz down.

    • http://twitter.com/RichieProcopio Richie Procopio

I’ll mention up front, that I don’t want or need to see raids in GW2. I do hope that the large scale events does indeed take some coordination, however.  Otherwise, they’ll become nothing but zerg fests.  Now to your question about WoW raiding:  It’s a lot more than just handing out assignments beforehand and then letting everyone do their thing.  When you’re working on a new boss, even if you know the strategy, you’re going to die over and over again. Each time your raid leader needs to analize what went wrong and make corrections.  The whole group has to figure out the puzzle together and come up with a strategy that works.  After all of that effort (sometimes it can take weeks to tackle a challenging boss) it is extremely satisfying and a rush to overcome something that challenging with a team of people.  It’s really like leading a team and knowing the strengths and weaknesses of your members to execute a strategy that works.  Thanks for watching and for your comments!

      • ArcherAvatar

I very much agree with Richie on this point – there is much more to participating in a “raid” than simply handing out assignments, and the appeal of it (for those who regularly participate in this sort of gameplay) is the cooridnation of effort and the problem solving aspects of it.

However, I personally feel like there are 3 areas where a “new and improved” version of this sort of coordination, and problem solving will be present in GW2.  First, and most obviously, the influence and participation of guilds in the WvW area will very much require the same coordination and problem solving skills seen in raids from previous titles.
Second, the competitive PvP area (not just the casual, but the actual 5 man teams who always fight together through tournaments and such.)
and Third, for those who want nothing to do with any sort of PvP whatsoever, there are the instanced dungeons which will provide highly challenging content for 5 person groups that will demand coordination and problem solving.

Btw, I really enjoyed this week’s episode!  Well done folks.  Not sure if this has settled into the “regular” cast for the show or not, but I very much enjoy this mix of personalities and the conversations that ensue.

        • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

WvW is alot of fun, but it’s just a zergfest.

Structured PVP, all the maps were the same gameplay style. Bolster really broke imersion, felt like I was playing a total different character.

Dungeons.  Seems you really need just one or two players to carry the group. Will be interesting to see if Arenanet can create encounters that requires skilled play from all players.

      • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

I agree, don’t really want to see raids in GW2.  I’m going to have my hands full with 14 first tier bosses in WoW MoP.

Richie, not sure about large scale GW2 events requiring coordination, when just about anyone can show up and participate.  All you really need is a critical mass to start the event.

There is such a meta game around raiding.
        - Keeping two tanks who can work in unison.
        - Making sure your healers have good solid off-spec dps.
        - Getting your dps to stop getting themselves killed.
        - Maintaining your guild’s raiding reputation within the realm.
        and so many others.

      • biotek

I have no problem with anyone enjoying that playstyle but I think it’s been done to death. It wouldn’t hurt to show a little love for the raiding crowd though. I never found raids terribly enjoyable. Even after finally downing a “difficult” boss after many wipes and strategy changes I never got that rush that many speak of.

I prefer a more dynamic encounter that is difficult but can be won on the first try if the players are experienced and can think/alter strategy on the fly to overcome unexpected events.

GW2 doesn’t currently appear to cater to either of those preferences but it doesn’t mean that it never will. Here’s hoping!

    • pandora005

Personally I am a bit turned down by the lack of coordination in some of the dynamic events when “the Zerg” do them. A well run raid with people who click their abilities with purpose and to achieve a certain goal is much better than simply buttonmashing as one of 20 people who are inside the orange circle.

However … cross profession combos and the lack of the holy trinity are things which make large raids pretty dangerous/impossible because a really well coordinated combo field (lets say 5 fire fields stacked together and 10 people shooting finishers through it) would totally break a “standard difficulty encounter”. If you crank up the difficulty you WILL NEED HEALERS AND TANKS (or at least tankish characters who arent dead after 1 hit and who can be healed quick enough). Healers arent in the game – which I dislike thoroughly – and thus I feel raids are impossible to have in GW2. Sadly this also means that the trivial and boring dynamic-Zerg-events are here to stay … *sigh*

A simplified UI doesnt matter … as long as the options are still there. One of the strengths of a raid would be to allow people the coordination for using combo fields efficiently and to time the use of them perfectly with the cooldown of the fields and finishers. You wont need to look for a combo field in an organized raid as much as you need to – but cant really – in a Zerg-event.

The problem with console MMOs is the companies who own the system (ie. Sony and Microsoft).  Consoles come with alot of problems such as: their long patching approval process, if you have a cash shop in the game do they get a cut, or for xbox do you need a gold membership to play etc.

  • Jeffrey _

     lol, moment of silence.

  • Brosaxon

Gary did you know you can play Tera with a controler?

But I guess the key point is that you want to play a GREAT MMO with a controler.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/EQKESN75BC55EMCY7XVEEDQZBY Patrick Kleinheinz

unless you bind a button on the controller for right click, you cannot play GW2 with controller as there is no mouselook. you need mouselook for those AOE abilities.

    • stevmcw

I played the BWE with a gamepad and I had no problem at all playing. For the AoE i set my cursor in the middle of the screen and used the fast cast option that casts them where your cursor is. I also set looting to one of my analog sticks so i just push it and loot which helped with my engineer to pick up the med pack things while i was circle strafing around people.

      • pandora005

Cursor in the middle screen is a stupid idea IMO because you have to move your facing too much. This will cause irritation in the long run because your eyes have to adjust too much to new pictures OR your flexibility is limited. Just because it is “possible” doesnt make it good.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QKLPUWK6UHJPU4QR6HVBBAXYZA e k

Ok Pandora, I’ve been reading your posts and I’m tired of you calling it a stupid idea for using a controller when people like me have already said it worked for us personally. Just because YOU cannot do it doesn’t mean others cannot. I see it akin to an average schmuck picking up the guitar and trying to play it, failing and then declaring playing anything on the guitar to be impossible. I play guitar and watched many people try to play and fail and so I know this.

Seriously, you’re making the controller sound a lot more difficult than it actually is. If you actually put some time and effort into it, one can easily bind all the important GW2 combat keys and STILL be able to use the right thumbstick to move the cursor around independently from camera look.

        • stevmcw

This isn’t the first MMO i’ve played with a controller. I’ve played Rift, WoW, Swtor and a few others. I guess I’m just use to playing like that, but like i said I’ve never had a problem with it. My eyes don’t need to adjust to the screen since i know where my cursor is and where my AoE is gonna land. also if i do need to move my cursor all i have to do is just use my other analog stick not very difficult.

I wanted to say that watching these Guildcasts is almost as fun as playing GW2 itself. You guys are a fun bunch of people and I’ll definitely will try to join in some Gamebreaker activities in the next BWE or GW2 release.

Oh and I wanted to add that I’ve been playing GW2 with a controller and it works out great. You will still need the mouse for some precise clicking for some out of combat stuff like clicking on NPC dialogue and stuff. But for combat, 90% of the time you don’t need the mouse depending on what build you have (i.e. depending on how many ground targeted skills or if you have auto cast on). I played sPVP with the Engineer with the controller and still maintained 1st or 2nd top scoring in every match. GW2 combat really does lend itself to controller play. Some mock the idea but from my experience it works very  well.

    • http://twitter.com/AndruC Andru

Here’s the thing though.  Between platforms, there’s room for slight interface redesigns. Look at the difference between the PC and console versions of Dragon Age for instance. No need for point-and-clicking dialogue trees; they adapted the interface to best utilize a stick as input.

      • pandora005

You dont need a “slight interface redesign” to enable console players to use ground targeted effects well. That would mean to “balance the game for all platforms” they would have to nerf/change these effects and/or add some auto-targeting options. Controllers are less flexible for any non-melee class which uses lots of those ground target effects (elementalists for example). It may sound like a nice idea, but you should refrain from climbing some mountains just because you can; it also has to make sense and unless there are more advanced controllers available I dont see this as a good idea.

Just get a PC kids … they arent that expensive and GW2 doesnt need a super high end one; my six year old one runs it just fine.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QKLPUWK6UHJPU4QR6HVBBAXYZA e k

This “kid” has a PC and had no problems playing GW2 sPVP with a controller. Ground targets effects are hardly a problem if you have autocast and leave the mouse cursor a bit in front of your character and it will stay there since you use the controller for camera look. I can even move the cursor with my controller if I need to.  And for the RARE instance where you absolutely need the precision of a mouse, it’s freaking right in front of me and takes but a second to move the mouse to where I need. Sure that might take a slightly more than if I had my hand on the mouse the whole time but the controller makes up for it in all other areas.

So just because YOU can’t use it doesn’t mean others can’t. I bet if you faced me in sPVP you wouldn’t even know I was using a controller and I’m actually very good at sPVP.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/ITHF7XKYGVXFAPCDMDJTKHLBBU Lian Wan

Are you use fast cast ground targeted skill option? Forgot to mention the exact name of the option but it was mentioned in a previoius Guildcast. That seems like it would take care of the issue with those skills.

  • Kicknpups

The idea of G2 on a console I find it insulting..Go play Tera if you want a game optimized for a controller. I look forward to went the game is finally released and I have to say the resurrect ability is more of a social ability. Its not just event based you can see when another player has fallen on the map making help rez them even easier. I have even gone as far to go out of my way to run to someone on the other side of the zone to rez then joined that player in event battles.

I use to be skeptic myself about this game. I “tried” G1 and I couldn’t stand it..From someone who loved DAOC and Played WoW since alpha and beta. G2 is completely different then them all. Yes people will argue that it isn’t and the combat is the same as others but fact is all MMO’s are a bread of each other. As Scott said it’s evolution of gaming. I.E Daoc was and still is the first Large area PvP battles. Yet so many people compare large PvP battles to Warhammer. When in reality DAOC use to have massive batles that even to this day I have never seen. I played Warhammer and it had nothing on DAOC PvP. Now G2 does it right. I wasn’t a fan of the boosting instant 85 pvp but it made so much more fun…

Great discussion guys Scott agree so much about MMO memory. Got to say as sad as I’m no BWE this weekend can’t wait for release!

As long as the support team for the PC version doesn’t end up smaller than it would have otherwise been, I couldn’t care less if they made a console version.

In fact, I welcome cross-platform play, if for no other reason than the easy kills.

    • pandora005

As long as there is an option to “mute X-Box players” I am fine with it … I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt, BUT I want to have a safety feature in case the prejudice about those kiddies turns out to be justified.

  • pandora005

For me the setting and how things look in the world sold GW2. The mechanics are interesting but secondary and in some way a negative part.

The problem with SciFi MMOs is the limitation to the world modification which players are allowed to make because you probably shouldnt allow them to use their spaceship to blow up buildings or whatever. Blowing huge holes into things should be EASY for future weapons tech and thus there would be huge modifications. This should have a SERIOUS consequence for the rest of the population and losing your ship in pvp SHOULD be costly. A SciFi game without spaceships doesnt really work that well. So basically a SciFi game needs a solid chunk of ECONOMICS as well to support that spaceship and so on. Action junkies dont like to think that much about strategy and economy …

Is GW2 still worth all the HYPE? Anyone say SWTOR? Don’t get me wrong GW2 looks more promising then SWTOR but….just saying

    • Ryan Newberger

Have you played the beta?  I’d say most of the hype is well deserved.

    • Spammerbam

Hype can become misleading if you don’t fully research about a game. But I’ve participated in the GW2 Beta and stress tests, and I can definitely say that GW2 did a great job and everything that Anet promised:
Dynamic events, underwater combat, a complex skill-based system + traits, cross-profession combos, level scaling, WvW, structured PvP, crafting… They’re all there.
I wouldn’t say any of these are “innovative”, but it certainly does a BETTER job.

Most of the GW2 hype that you’ve heard are mostly pure hype, where people have played the Beta and really liked it.
However, what you choose to play is up to you; every game has its ups and downs, and in the end, it all comes down to personal preference.

  • Sklys

Good show folks !!!!! Always enjoy Guildcast :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=506728308 Julian F’n Mugnieco

Personally, I don’t think A-net can be taken seriously in an e-sport situation (which they’ve said numerous times they’re going for in PvP) with a console port in the mix. Whether or not it’s possible to play with ha gamepad/controller, which it probably is, PC users would have an enormous advantage. Any 5s team with 1-2 console players vs. a 5s team of PC players would get utterly destroyed. And server with an abundance of console players in WvW would get utterly destroyed. The reaction time on consoles is ridiculously low compared to that of PC, and if you ask me, the skill cap is much lower too. Remember when HALO was pitting 360 players vs. PC players against each other and the PC players decimated the 360 players? Sure, that’s an FPS, but it’s an analogy for comparison regardless. It may work sure. GW2 may get some extra bucks out of it sure. All in all however, imo it’s got no staying power on consoles in either PvE or PvP.

    • Spammerbam

I agree with you on that. Though it’s a great game, It’s hard just to imagine it being on consoles..

NCsoft has promised Sony a mmo of some kind. Everyone was saying that it was Blade & Soul, but now more people think it is  GW2

  • Old Ben

Regarding console controllers, it’s ironic that so many console games are FPS these days, when that’s exactly the genre that gamepads / thumbsticks are worst for.

Hopefully Valve’s console plans will go ahead, and they’ll release a console with a trackball on its controller, that will make fast movement and precise aiming possible (and will inevitably force other console makers to follow suit).

The main issue with porting a MMORPG to a console isn’t the controller or even the interface, though, it’s the player base. People who play games on PCs are generally looking for a different (more complex, more layered) experience than console players.

I can see GW2′s structured PvP and even WvW appealing to console players, but I’m not so sure about the PvE side of the game.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/ITHF7XKYGVXFAPCDMDJTKHLBBU Lian Wan

Well FFXI seems to have done well enough that Sony make a sequel. :)

      • Old Ben

        > Well FFXI seems to have done well enough

Well, it got about 500k players at its peak, IIRC. And that’s including the people playing it on PCs.

        >  that Sony make a sequel. :)

Yes… and what happened to that sequel, exactly (he asked, innocently)?

        • http://profile.yahoo.com/ITHF7XKYGVXFAPCDMDJTKHLBBU Lian Wan

Failure of the sequel is not a reflection of the predecessor!(Said the person who spent a day downloading FFXI patches and then uninstalled it after around 20 minutes of playing …).  …and my brain is obviously not all here, FFXI is by Square-Enix and not Sony. I could be completely wrong here but wasn’t the sequel also made by a team that has never worked on a MMO(RPG?)?

My personal dislike of that game came from the slow combat and the fact that the graphics were designed for a 320×240 screen from 10 feet away while I was playing at 1600×1200 from 3 feet away. Neither of those should be an issue for GW2.

As for the 500k peak, that doesn’t really matter as much for GW2 since the important thing is the initial sale.

          • Old Ben

            > Neither of those should be an issue for GW2.

Well, the resolution might not be an issue, but since GW2 seems to bring even 4 GHz CPUs to their knees, I definitely don’t see it running very well on the current generation of consoles.

            > As for the 500k peak, that doesn’t really matter as
            > much for GW2 since the important thing is the initial sale.

It matters because it shows you what the potential sales are. If we’re talking about half a million console players, it’s probably worth the cost to make the port, but if we’re talking 200k, it might not be.

And remember that Sony, Microsoft (and, I assume, Nintendo), charge publishers a ton of money to distribute patches, and an MMO needs to have all clients patched to the same version. FFXI had a subscription fee to cover that, but GW2 won’t, so a console version could actually end up _costing_ Arena Net.

Again, the panel is talking about in-game voice comms as if they would simply duplicate the functions of 3rd party voice comms. That would indeed be pointless.

But in-game voice comms could have a “proximity” option, for example, where you would hear everyone near you (with their voice fading as they get more distant). Can you imagine how much this would add to “street conversations” in cities?

It could also automatically put you on the same voice channel as people in your squad (in WvW), or with people participating in the same event (in PvE).

All of these are things that 3rd party VoIP software can’t do, because it doesn’t have access to that game data.

The slider in the game is just for “ducking”, BTW (lowering the volume of the game audio whenever a VoIP application transmits or receives sound).

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/ITHF7XKYGVXFAPCDMDJTKHLBBU Lian Wan

mumble(a 3rd party VoIP app) actually supports the positional audio thing.

      • Old Ben

Not without a plug-in to connect GW2 to it. And so far Arena Net has said nothing about GW2 supporting 3rd party plug-ins.

        • http://profile.yahoo.com/ITHF7XKYGVXFAPCDMDJTKHLBBU Lian Wan

“The context and identity information are not forwarded to the other
clients though. They can be used by server side applications which
could, for example, place players in different channels/groups depending
on the server/team they are currently playing on/in.”

From the Mumble documentation. Although that would be murmur actually doing the work. It isn’t necessarily impossible to do without ANet’s support but it would certainly make things easier. The biggest issue would be whether or not using it would violate the TOS.

ANet could actually just use mumble and murmur because of the BSD license but they would need to get license for Ice. On the other hand Ice would give them something they wanted to provide anyway. That being the ability to chat with your friends/guildies/… outside of the game through things like your phone or the GW2 website. :)

          • Old Ben

             > place players in different channels/groups depending
             > on the server/team they are currently playing on/in.

If you read what I wrote, you’ll see that’s precisely the problem. Player B needs to be on the same “team” as A and C, but A and C are not on the same team.

            >  It isn’t necessarily impossible to do without ANet’s support

If the game doesn’t voluntarily expose player coordinates through a plug-in, the only other ways to do it are to patch GW2.exe or intercept the network traffic and extract the player position. both will probably be flagged as cheats or bots by GW2 (assuming it runs those kinds of checks).

    • http://twitter.com/elixabethclaire Elisabeth Claire

In all honesty, the LAST thing I want to hear is “everyone near [me]” in an MMO. I want to talk to friends whether they’re close by or not, and I want to choose who can or cannot hear me, and who I can or cannot hear. A /say or proximity-based chat is more than enough for a street-conversation-esque effect, IMO.

The squad/WvW thing is great, and if that was its own functionality, that’d be fine on its own — but the first bit is something I want no part of.

      • Old Ben

Then simply click the button “restrict to friends list” or add individual (annoying) players to your blacklist, in the voice comms window.

I posted a long message about this ages ago, with some details about the interface and the backend, but since I doubt Arena Net is even going to bother with classical voice comms (let alone anything innovative), there’s really no point in repeating it.

My main point is: In-game voice chat can do a lot of things that external applications can’t, the same way that an in-game map can show you things that a JPEG in an external picture viewer can’t.

I would definitely love to have a proximity channel in an MMO. I can already hear what a lot of NPCs are saying around me (that’s part of what makes the sound atmosphere in GW2 cities feel so realistic), so it would make perfect sense to hear players as well.

It’s really no different from following the city / trade / sector chat in most MMOs. Some places are very “spammy”, so you turn it off, but in other places it adds to the atmosphere and is part of what makes an MMO into an MMO.

        • ChristopherMitchell1

Sorry but this idea would break any immersion I would have. Third party services are always going to be better anyways when it comes to voice communications unless the game has a set communications team completely devoted to in game voice communication. WoW put in-game voice communication in and absolutely no one bothers with it so they stopped wasting their time trying to improve it since that’s exactly what it would be… a waste of time.

          • Old Ben

            >  this idea would break any immersion

Yes, the ability to hear people who are talking next to you would… break immersion. Makes perfect sense.

I often feel a sense of detachment from reality when someone talks to me and I can actually hear their voice. It’s just so… unnatural. o_O

            > Third party services are always going to be better anyway

Clearly you didn’t read any of what I wrote. None of those things is even a possibility with external applications. It’s not a matter of being “better” or “worse”, it’s a matter of not working at all.

            > WoW put in-game voice communication
            > in and absolutely no one bothers with it

And so, because WoW did something wrong, the entire industry must either do it equally wrong or completely forget about it…?

WoW’s voice comms have atrocious sound quality and lag. Why would anyone use them when you hear things 3 seconds too late and can’t understand a single word?

          • ChristopherMitchell1

            >Yes, the ability to hear people who are talking next to you would… break immersion. Makes perfect sense.

Yes, because I would bet you more than I have that the ‘people’ around you in-game are not going to be ‘in-character’ and thus will break my immersion in a ‘fantasy’ game. Hearing people near me talk about the chick they banged last night at some club IRL with a 12 year old sounding voice would break the game for me and I can’t imagine the majority of players enjoying this so why would we want the devs wasting their time on it?

            >And so, because WoW did something wrong, the entire industry must either do it equally wrong or completely forget about it…?

Don’t waste your gubands of accusatory tones of me saying everything must follow WoW’s example when I only used WoW as an example because it was the only MMO that attempted in-game comms. The entire WoW community asked for this feature and when it was implemented everyone realized that in game comms were simply unnecessary and even more so now that there are a ton that won’t even charge you for a server. Even if they Anet implemented it as good as you wish most people would not use it anyways regardless.

          • Old Ben

            >  the ‘people’ around you in-game are not
            > going to be ‘in-character’ and thus will
            > break my immersion in a ‘fantasy’ game.

Then click “restrict to friends list” or add that person to your ignore list, same as you would do to remove their chat / spam from the chat window. Or move away from them and sit at a different table in the tavern, same as you would in a real restaurant.

Some people jump around a lot. Some people cast spells non-stop. Some people keep summoning pets / mounts / whatever. That’s just how MMORPGs work. If the presence of other people makes the game less enjoyable for you, you can always look into single-player games (or into an MMO with a different kind of community).

            > [WoW] was the only MMO that attempted
            > in-game comms. The entire WoW community
            > asked for this feature and when it was
            > implemented everyone realized that in
            > game comms were simply unnecessary

None of those three statements is correct, but nevermind. WoW’s built-in comms don’t do anything useful and have terrible quality and terrible lag. Neither I nor anyone else suggested duplicating WoW’s voice comms in GW2, so your “example” is irrelevant. You just picked something that is clearly broken and said “this thing is broken, therefore I am right”.

In fact, if you read the very first paragraph I wrote in this thread, you’ll see that I immediately pointed out that “simply duplicat[ing] the functions of 3rd party voice comms [...] would indeed be pointless.”

Your comparison with WoW is like saying “game X has a terrible in-game chat, which is worse than opening an external IRC client, so other games shouldn’t even attempt to have built-in chat”.

I think the logical fallacy there is pretty easy to spot.

Your point about “not wanting to hear certain people” is perfectly valid, but I had already addressed it above (blacklist that person or restrict voice comms to your friends – which is what people already do with text chat), so I’m not sure why you’re repeating it.

          • ChristopherMitchell1

actually it isn’t the same as text chat… how do you propose you censor voice chat? If you don’t like foul language all you have to do is turn on censor in texts but you can’t do that with voiced. And if you say just ‘add to ignore list’ you would be required to have the ignore list UI feature permanently on your screen at all times. At least with text you don’t have to worry about ‘ignoring’ every other person just because they are chatting with someone else. You think this is a good idea and Elixabeth and I think its a bad idea, gg.

          • Old Ben

            > how do you propose
            > you censor voice chat?

I don’t propose to censor anything. Are you telling me you censor voice chat in Ventrilo? Wait, who am I kidding? You never actually use Ventrilo; that would expose you to other human voices.

            > If you don’t like foul language
            > all you have to do is turn on
            > censor in texts

Yes, because no one can type “$hit” or “sheeeet” instead of “shit”, right? And it’s impossible to be rude without using any swear words, eh…?

Automatic censorship is absolutely useless. If you’re that scared of what other human beings might say (and that incapable of dealing with it), turn off your sound or set the voice comms to “restricted to friends list”, which I’m guessing in your case amounts to the same thing.

            > And if you say just ‘add to ignore list’
            > you would be required to have the
            > ignore list UI feature permanently on
            > your screen at all times.

Have you ever played any multiplayer games… ever? How do you ignore people in WoW? How do you mute people in TF2 or Counter-Strike?

            > You think this is a good idea
            > and Elixabeth and I think its
            > a bad idea, gg.

Oh, so this is a case of whiteknighting? Should have guessed.

          • ChristopherMitchell1

cool story bro, in the end I win because they will never implement this and I’m thankful.

          • Old Ben

            > I win because they
            > will never implement this

Why such modesty? Why stop at GW2? If I were you, I’d also claim “victory” for the lack of voice comms in Doom, Tetris and Photoshop.

Now all you need to do is convince Valve to remove the voice and chat support from Source games, and I’m sure the IGDA will give you a special award for “Strongest Opposition to Human Communication”.

          • ChristopherMitchell1

ok, I don’t see why not. This idea in those games would be equally pointless. And don’t even get me started on Valves voice chat functions in Source games LOL! Vent FTW N00b!

About playing with others and how you can play with no interaction.  During the stress test I played a lot in the quaggan area and fort selma area of kessex hills and while doing events 5 of us came together and formed a group that lasted pretty much for the duration of the stress test. A couple of them knew each other but the rest of us were randoms but because we pretty much had the same goals we came together and played together for hours on end. besides Sorrow’s Furnace in the original Guild Wars I have never played that long with total strangers in any game.

Best show in a while. I love it when Scott, Richie and Elisabeth are on…though I do miss Mike B as well. Still, can’t have everything. It’s a good show.

  • Christian Lundell

To the host: I very much like that you take control and steer the discussion in interesting directions but please STOP INTERRUPTING your cast members.

  • Clearandsweet

Elisabeth had so much quality stuff to say and said so in such a coherent and concise way that she made the other people, especially the host, seem like they were detracting from the conversation. She also didn’t upspeak? Like every other girl on the internet? I was really impressed by her and would like to hear her more. Maybe with Mike B. They seem like they could have a great dialogue.

       Upspeak?

      • http://twitter.com/elixabethclaire Elisabeth Claire

I *think* that “upspeak” is a reference to when you end most sentences like you’re asking a question (and your voice goes up accordingly). I’m not sure though, so don’t quote me on it.

Can we have Shawn back on every once and a while? It’ll be nice, considering there wouldn’t be a Guildcast without him.

I am a bit surprised that people are this attached to a beta. We already know there will be a full wipe before release…

Everything you do now will be for nothing. :(

You can play pretty much any PC game with a PS3 controller using the MotioninJoy driver. The question is whether or not you can come out with a key mapping that works. Do regular PC controllers usually allow you to remap keys as well?

http://www.arena.net/jobs/ might be an interesting page to monitor if you are interested in where ANet is going with GW2. If they start looking for people with experience making console games then you can probably guess what they are doing. :)

Completely unrelated but nice segue to Netflix Gary!

  • http://www.facebook.com/duanedkinney Duane David Kinney

Another Fantastic episode of Guildcast.  Scott, Gary, and Elixabeth had some great interaction and kept the talk fun.  Richie still seems like an extra wheel but he always brings great points to light and he’s started to melt into the group better, I look forward to his participation in more shows.  Too bad it is really only practical to have four video feeds at a time on this show, because the Mikes would be a fantastic edition.

I know!  Maybe Mike S and Mike B could sit either side of Gary?!?  They could throw Final Fantasy boxes incessantly and indulge in dreadful humour!

I’m asking too much, just keep being amazing and giving us boatloads of food for thought.

Excellent discussion regarding the evolution of MMOs.   There are numerous reasons
why MMOs have stagnated, investors and the high risk are certainly part of the reason.   I’d
like to suggest a more basic reason.   MMO developers have simply been less than stellar game designers.

There is a reason old-school MMOs developers failed in their attempts now that MMOs are evolving out of the niche market where they started.   Their out-dated design philosophies have no place in a larger market and many of the flaws were copied even when WoW brought much needed polish to the genre.

As Scott pointed out in his answer to the viewer mail, end-game does not have to equal raids.   But too many MMO devs still think that is the only answer.   Players should something different and something  better but only if the community stops clinging to the tired traditions of MMOs.  This acceptance has perpetuated the same game designs over the years and convinced developers that they are making good games that don’t need to be changed.  In truth, they needed to be changed from the moment the MMO genre started.

It has not just been an aversion to risk that has stifled the MMO genre.   It has been the developers in it.

  • http://twitter.com/llothos llothos

little late to the discussion, currently catching up on my shows but just wanted to mention that I would have to disagree that MMO’s is the Genre and then there is multiple “sub genre’s” below that. It would be like saying a NASCAR game is NOT a racing game or playing a hockey game is not a sports game. MMORPG’s could also be a sub genre of say RPG games but enen though they do have similar mechanics they would be vastly different from each other to have them as separate genre’s. I know the discusion went on with various opinions in the show but I had to add my two bits :) .
