GuildCast 46: RNG Sends Guild Wars 2 Players Raging to the Forums

Feeling lucky?

If you’re one of the many people who have been buying Black Lion keys, then probably not.

The low drop rate and dice rolling of RNG has meant some people have blown a whole lot of cash in the gem store to end up with not a lot in the way of Halloween goodies. Did you get a chainsaw sword skin on your first try? If so, don’t mention it to Elisabeth.

We look at the controversy and whether the response by ArenaNet is up to par.

Whether this aspect of the festivities has left you pulling your hair out, there’s no doubt there’s a lot of content strewn across Tyria to sink your sweet tooth into. We talk about just what is available and whether we’re getting indigestion from all the candy corn — seriously, does anyone actually eat that vile stuff?

Patch notes arrive with the regularity of Gary’s troll videos and this week is no exception — in either case.

Karma rewards were added. Is this a good thing? Is the dance I just had to do at the mere mention of it an indication?

There’s a skritt burgular on the loose. Yes, a burgular. Don’t ask questions.

Before we get lost in theft and too many vowels, we talk about just what has landed in Guild Wars 2 with this new patch beyond all the spooky goings on.

Class tweaks and changes have arrived, particularly for all you Elementalists out there. Guardian’s also saw some adjustments, will I explode into a fiery rage? It is Wednesday after all…

Throw in viewer questions and that’s a whole lot of show to take care of. Joining GAMEBREAKER’s Gary Gannon are Richie Procopio, Massively‘s Elisabeth Cardy and ZAM‘s Scott Hawkes for a troll dancing episode of GuildCast!

Besides the usual keys, I bought both costumes and 2 sets of mini’s so i can get the special mini. FYI you can put the costumes forge. DONT you get junk back out.

  • EndrzGame

Great show guys. What is that video with the women with the funky hair and eyes? I have a friend who looks similar to her and I’d love to troll her with some still images. =P

    • EndrzGame

NVM, found it. Keep up the good work guys.

      I hate you.

i hate you and i don’t even care abouth the chests

  • http://www.facebook.com/rasmus.nielsen.75491 Rasmus Nielsen

I haven’t opened any chests, but I think it’s fine, they HAVE to get money somehow, seasonal events are *obvious* money sinks

  • omgbile omgtoxin

The halloween chests have the same RNG as the Black Lion Chests do, but instead of actually getting something useful for example boosts, you get trick or threat bags so you can make more level 25 food! Best fix ever :)

  • Burninghate

if it makes Elizabeth Clare feel better ive spent a considerable sum of money opening a considerable number of chests and have yet to receive a special item. i did get an endless mystery potion tho that turns you into a huge variety of plant life . i suspect the game just hates Elementalists

  • ZekePrince

    Burgular. :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/rasmus.nielsen.75491 Rasmus Nielsen

That Skritt sounds JUST like the Treasure mob from GOLDEN AXE! Fuck Diablo 3 they stole that from GOLDEN AXE OF AWESOME!

    • http://twitter.com/RichieProcopio Richie Procopio

Haha…I actually almost said it was a throw back to Golden Axe when I made the comment I saw someone in chat compare it to Diablo 3, so I stuck with that.

  • Stuart Dunn

ANet should make a token currency and put a minimum amount per chest so people who opened 100 of them can 100% get what they want, while still giving a chance for people to get it in one try. Don’t buy the mystic forge fix though, bugged system from the start. I’ve lost over 40 g in mats from mystic forge bugs giving wrong items and ANet will not compensate players for the company’s mistakes. They need to take accountability and treat players well, not give them the finger.

  • Joey Biggs

LOL! At 36:24 I paused the video without realizing it and I was staring at Scott’s face for like 30 seconds laughing my ass off on how still he was sitting… and then I saw it was paused… /facepalm

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question, great show!

    • http://twitter.com/RichieProcopio Richie Procopio

It was a pleasure!  You consistently send in great questions.  Thanks!

Face-kick to the nuts, anybody? anybody?

  • Jant0n

I would have been okay with the way the black lion rng was set up, if the odds of winning were clearly visible to the people buying keys. This is the only thing I have disliked about their cash shop so far. I bought the mad king outfit and will probably buy more gems at some point, but I am not going to waste my money when I don’t even know the odds. Other than that It is a fantastic event and I have had a lot of fun so far.

  • madpup

    She mad bro

  • http://twitter.com/vorgra Ben Weldon

I saw the Treasure skritt at the grub place near divinty (the human starting zone?)

  • http://twitter.com/BlueSyringa Crystal

I came across this npc, just after watching the show yesterday. Elixabeth’s in-game twin lol

  • http://twitter.com/Tine_gwen tine Sionnach

ok people are qqing over the keys and chest. i think that its an overall drop rate not just a single chest drop rate. I had a guildie streaming yesterday and he had a key drop for him while streaming and he opened a chest and on the first chest got the scythe. He never opens chests or buys gems because he hates gambles… however next couple of days he wont be talked to by the guild lol.

  • Daniel Eden

I think the problem with the chests is that the rewards for opening a chest really aren’t worth the cost of the key.  If they upped the rewards or drastically reduced the cost of keys, I’d feel much better about things.

  • http://www.facebook.com/kayla.roese Kayla Roese

lol you guys had me in tears laughing from this episode

  • Robert DeLeon

Trying to watch 46 but after a few minutes it will go to a next up logo and go to another podcast.

Favorite quote from Elixabeth when talking about the liquid jugs of Karma: “Yeah the jugs are just gorgeous”

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/OABTMHSNAQ7DNEJO6T5E4VSTOI Mr.Mustacho

gw1 gave you: some quests, a few fun but useless consumables, a costume brawl and a fun minigame with a new NPC who gave you free hat and people loved it

gw2 gave you: some new events, a quests, fun consumables, a costume brawl, new weapon and armor skins and a free hat (and this is just the first or four parts) and people are complaining

as for the mystic chests i think they didn’t sell as well as arenanet thought they would so they added some better items hoping to boost sales a little not realizing people would trow their money away to get a simple skin

  • Revanhavoc

I’ve never seen Elixabeth so depressed and angry at Scott, and so broke from her massive gambling addiction to GW2 RnG items. It was sad.

No, I’m just kidding….About the gambling part. Gambling is just fine.

  • http://twitter.com/squared002 Squared002

Holiday events are supposed to be “fun”. The problem is that
gambling in video games doesn’t amount to fun when you’re losing real life cash
to RNG. I feel the problem lies in the fact that Arena Net made the items
actual items. They should have made them SKINS only without stats (IE: like
their armor sets you can buy in the cash shop, they are skins only you have to
apply to a piece of armor). I also feel that if they stick to the “everything
in the game can be obtained without using the cash shop”, they should make
Holiday item models SKINS and make them obtainable if you spend a “reasonable” amount
of time during the event farming for the SKIN.

Making Holiday items SKINS and not items (so no one gets instant
legendary/exotic items) makes much more sense to me for holiday items. They
really went the wrong direction with this.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_R35J5EUERGS3E6JRIQMBCDTRRY Nathan I

      they ARE skins only.

The ones with stats can all be obtained with ZERO interaction with the gem store.

All of these people complaining don’t even bother doing proper research.

  • Shagral

guess I’ll have to alt+tab and listen to this as a podcast, since mr. gannon here just keeps plugging these stupid youtube stills

    • http://twitter.com/AisarGaming EBates

lol, I am alreaddy at the point where I grimace each time it comes up.  Funny twice, not funny after that.  I will admit it is still slightly entertaining…

  • http://twitter.com/AisarGaming EBates

26:00- You can’t say it’s just a game or not a big deal.  Coming from someone who is a hardcore MMO player and should understand perfectly, I was very surprised by this statement.

  • Brian Orr

Can’t believe I was in Vegas last week and didn’t see Scott. I am guessing he was there for SOE Live like I was, per the Batman figure sitting on his shelf. I kept looking around hoping Gary and some of the GB peeps would be there like they did last year.

    • ScottHawkes

Yup I was there, I was hanging around Bally’s from Wednesday night until Sunday morning.

12 runs and still no HH Helm for my Ret Paladin. (WoW:MoP)

  • Jay

Lol Gary trollin’ Lis hard in this one… Keep drivin’ dat bus, Grief.

BTW I opened 5 chests, got nothing, went back to killing things.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brandy-Smith/100000878642568 Brandy Smith

At least it’s not as bad as TERA’s RNG, that game is RNG on top of RNG on top of ENDGAME RNG.

  • http://twitter.com/JESheller Jason Sheller

Soooo let me get this straight, a representative from A-Net came to people’s houses and held a gun to their head demanding that they buy a bunch of keys from the gem store and use them on the chests.  Well, I can understand why people are upset…wait…what?  They purchased them using their own free will?  Well then, there’s nothing to complain about.

  • DoctorOverlord

A silly episode but fun to watch :)   Once again GBTV delves into the dark insanity of the Internet, I never would have known about Leslie Hall without Gary.   Now I need to wash my brain.

I ran into the burglar skritt in Queensdale I believe.  I killed a veteran bear near Godslost Swamp and opened a chest and then he popped out.  I thought he was just a standard  dynamic event rather than a new addition.  It was amusing chasing him around.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dennis.l.kent Dennis Lee Kent Jr.

Mad King Thorn was fun. I tediously solo’d him on my Warrior. Took a while but it was fun :)
