Jedi Consular Shadow PvP Guide - SWTOR

Star Wars: The Old Republic is only days away from Early Access, and you need to catch up on your PvP tactics. Thankfully, our resident PvP extraordinaire Ed Park aka Taugrim has the videos to help you out. This time, Taugrim shows us the rogue-like class of the Jedi Shadow. This Advanced Class favors position, and of course, damage output. The class combines excellent crowd-control abilities as well as a few ranged-DPS abilities. However, because the damage output of this class greatly depends on your position, this may not be the melee DPS class you’re looking for. You may be more interested in the Jedi Sentinel, which Ed covered in a former video. The best strikes of the Shadow come from when you stand behind your opponent, so if you like a challenge and have good strafing abilities, then you’ll want to check out this class.

Lol, the twirly saber guy at 4:53 and 5:09. I saw the controls and keybinding thing you did on the sanctum. I’d really like it if you did some for Tor in the future. It was interesting to see how you set up your keys, even though i don’t play rift. Anyway, a good depiction of how to use the consular shadow in pvp. I have personally never tried it, but i feel like i’d have a much better chance in pvp after watching this vid. I’ve found it’s supremely annoying to think you have an area locked down, only to have a shadow unveil, CC, and double saber your face.

FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU- I had just agreed with myself to run a sniper over an assassin, but now I really want to play the assassin seeing how he looks in PVP O.o damn it!

Well, don’t make up your mind yet.

We have a Vanguard video going up in the next day :)

Damn you taugrim! Why do you have to make sooo good videos… We will never be able to deside what class we want to play!

That was my concern, range dominating melee, but seems that fear is not something to worry over too much.

    • http://twitter.com/taugrim Taugrim (Ed Park)

Range does have some advantages over melee in Huttball, which is why I made a video of this melee class in Huttball and why my “ranged” class videos after my first one (Trooper) were not in Huttball.

That being said, ranged classes do have some mechanics advantages over the “Warrior” classes (Jedi Knight / Sith Warrior) at lower levels. The “Warrior” classes are late bloomers in this game.

I do think BioWare should give the “Warrior” classes their CCs earlier in the game, e.g. the 24 stun at level 14, to be symmetrical with what the other classes have.

Just a quick note: While you may depend on Shadow Strike at lower levels, your priority changes greatly. At 50, you’ll be using Clairvoyant Strike, Force Breach, and Project quite a bit more than Shadow Strike. The only time you’ll really be Shadow Striking is with Infiltration Tactics procs. 50 Force is just too much for the damage it does when compared to the efficiency of other abilities.

    • http://twitter.com/taugrim Taugrim (Ed Park)

      Understood and agreed.

The purpose of the video was not to provide a level 50 Guide. It’s to discuss the class mechanics and playstyle.

I’ll have a ton of videos and streams going up as I level various classes to 50. Stay tuned.

Apologies on the double-post. Wish you had replied to the other one, though, and not this one! This one comes off as a bit douchey, whereas in the other (the one that was meant to be posted, not both) acknowledged that I know it’s only a low-level video, and I’m waiting anxiously on your future max-level videos.

        • http://twitter.com/taugrim Taugrim (Ed Park)

          It’s all good.

I’m glad people like you with more hands-on time with classes are posting tips and feedback, it contributes to the community.

And I’ll be the first person to tell you I have a lot to learn and improve on.

While you do depend quite heavily on Shadow Strike at lower levels, your ability priority changes quite largely at 50. At max level, you depend much more on Clairvoyant Strike, Force Breach, Project, and only really Shadow Strike with Infiltration Tactics procs. 50 Force is just too expensive for the damage it does, when compared to the efficiency of other abilities.

That said, all of the other tips are quite good. Looking forward to seeing some max-level videos so you can delve a bit more into how the individual classes play, rather than just general-purpose tips and tricks.

One thing I noticed with your hotbar key bindings, asd were bound to abilities. How do you move, just the mouse for forward/left/right?

    • Sam Oh

he uses WR to strafe and E to move forward I believe. Of course, only the mouse to turn. This gives you more keys to use around your left hand.

Great video with a lot of great tips for my soon to be assassin. I got to play a little Alderaan in the last weekend event and really loved the ability to not only guard my cap with a lightsaber in the back, but also being able to have enough CC and range to finish as the ranged tried to run.

Which class would do more damage Jedi Knight/Sentinel or the “Shadow” build of the Consular, assuming the shadow role is played correctly.

Also if anyone could quickly outline the differences in combat between Jedi Guardian and Consular, I would appreciate it, thanks guys!

I dont quite understand what u write here about the mouse bindings in this article…

    http://taugrim.com/2011/04/07/guide-to-strafing-movement-and-keybindings/

I am not quite experienced MMO player, I am attracted to SWTOR because Star Wars but mouse + view system irritates me…

I don’t (and I guess many other players FPS background) like that camera doesn’t lock to the mouse and I have great difficulties to control it with right click mouse and so, I am totally loosing the control of the view during battles…

I see u explain the mouse controls for Rift (I don’T play the Rift so I don’t quite get it….) but can you also write here what is our configuration at SWTOR…

And I have a problem with targeting also, what is the system are using for the targeting, can u tell ur key bindings for targeting?

Hey man saw your video and liked it so i rolled a jedi shadow and am now happily lvl 30. A great advantage to the republic side is there virtually no queue for pvp so ive had instant access to the war zones. ( At least on my server “Juyo”)

With so many lvl 50′s in the BG’s now it really helps to land shadow strike whenever possible becasue unlike other ability’s it does enough damage to make a dent.
    Anywho cool video Thanks
