You really need to figure out how to set up contests for outside US, most companies have no problem with contests in Canada except for Quebec.  Awesome show though.  I’m still putting my name in for the contest, I get it shipped to someone in the US.

I was really hopeful after watching Blizzcon for MoP, but that hope has been tapering off.  Hopefully this new press event will bring back some of the enthusiasm that I felt then… not holding my breath though.

Mega-servers could be OK. If your combining all the servers of a particular type like you suggested it would be pretty cool, probably. As it’s used in SWTOR I’m not a fan. To intance areas on individual servers makes the game feel REALLY empty most of the time.

About the cross realm-realms thing, I think there are definitely some things that they would need to figure out with it like player names, guild names, AH, chat, etc, but it is definitely a great idea and would be awesome if they could pull it off.

I can’t say I’m sold on the “cross server servers” thing, I guess I just feel like it can’t possibly be as simple as you guys make it sound. Who knows though, that would be one hell of an innovative move on Blizzards part for sure.

I like the single server idea; from a sociological standpoint this would be fascinating to observe as it would be an interesting model of what happens to societies when towns turn into cities. This would also provide a good name for it – the hidden shard would be your neighborhood, and the big PvE West Server would be like the Metropolis as a whole. I think this is an excellent analogy since, the boundaries between neighborhoods do blur just like the shard jumping would allow. Unlike cities, the landscape would be as dynamic as the social networks formed by the the players themselves.

P.S. I have a c/o address in the U.S. for the toy – I use it so I don’t get dinged the absurd fees for shipping to Canada.

EDIT: I think it’s a great idea to combine everything together as much as possible. Chat will be a nightmare and is going to be the biggest issue to resolve and I can’t think of any good solutions currently.

I somehow got this eerie feeling that Blizzard really might be implementing all these gameplay and coding-related changes for different ends than people generally think. Now, this is just my uneducated two cents, but I think they might be using WoW as a kind of coder’s beta for Titan. Try out all kind of fun stuff like phasing, cross-server functions and removing servers, and put what works to the elusive upcoming MMO. Now, I’ll admit I’m completely hopeless when it comes to coding, but I feel the guys could literally copy-paste lines of WoW code to Titan, if it’s coded similarly, and have a functioning or at least near-operational LFG tool or UI.

I think your ideas about phasing and having the game automatically fill areas to their most efficient capacity seems so logical it’s a wonder that programming isn’t an MMO standard.

Getting rid of the servers was long overdue, and it’d be a big step towards longevity of the game.
The server community aspect has been long gone for me. The Guild/flist community aspect would stay the same and it’d be much easier to find people with a similar mindset with a system like that.

PS: I just love how every episode you seem to dick around more and more

So for the population balance, I think the real problem on servers with pop imbalance is world pvp.
So another alternative however unlikely would be buffs a la wintergrasp.

My oh my, free MoP expansion? Not going to happen.

As for the server ‘merger’ I can see it happening. Would be pretty neat, though it would have some drawbacks in terms of community just like Fony said. Most of the game seems to not rely on the servers now anyway, at least end game, so I really don’t see it NOT happening.

Personally I would love to see some sort of voucher system added into the game. Something like you can have multiple characters that gather valor/conquest. Then you can purchase a voucher at a 2-1 ratio (i.e. it will take 2 of one currency to make one BOA currency); then be able to send the voucher to one of your alts. I know from experience, as Mike B said, is a pain in the butt to get gear from one tier to the next. 

Look at Maple Story for this. They have just a handful of servers, with different channels. WoW would just take this one step further and only have a single server (or 1 per region and type), and you could PICK the shard you want. They wouldn’t even have to have logic to find your friends.

 as far as the single server goes, its already been done, you guys really need to check out this really good pvp game that came out 7 years ago, idk if you’ve heard of it but theres a sequel coming out soon, its called guild wars, and guess what, the game is made by former blizzard employees, i know its crazy talk, but its been done, same w/ spectator mode and most of the “cool new things” blizzard is doing w/ MoP

I think dynamically assigned realms are totally plausible.  If anyone can pull this off successfully and implement it as a new standard in the MMO community, Blizzard is the one to do it.

I really liked the idea about the Server’s as one with seperate “shards”. Ive played since Vanilla and raided on High pop servers all through BC until 3.1 of Wrath and ABSOLUTELY LOVED 25man raiding. But then I moved to a low pop server for real world friends and the choice of 25m guild was lacking but i still managed to find one. After killing LK (on 10m normal 15% buff in a pug not an easy thing to pull off truly on the low pop server). I took a break til 3 months ago. The low pop server im on has now 0 25m guilds due to lack of raiders and lack on interest cuz “Why raid 25m when the same loot drops in 10m”. Its not always about the loot, the 25m experience was fun. My favorite encounter is Teron Gorefiend back at lvl 70. And getting really pissed off at that one dude who always died in Naxx when trying to get Immortal. those are examples of good times Ive had over my long wow career. Bottomline I believe something like what you suggested will give low pop servers the player base to fit more players where they want to be in the game rather than being content with their situation or paying to transfer to find a better one.

I fully support servers being tossed to the wayside.

I love World of Warcraft. I have for several years (throughout good and bad experiences), and I’ve forged many relationships because of this game. I can only see that number increasing once the server barrier between players is torn down. Will there seemingly be more trolls and/or jerks? Probably. But there’s an ignore feature for a reason, nor will I allow such users to spoil my fun. Plus the thought of constant Raids, refreshing resources, and never-ending activity is great.

Though I will mention, try to imagine farming a rare spawn. Ugh. Or the rush to complete quests/do dailies at the release of new content. Will we players be tripping over each other trying to do these things? Will it be just like how it is on high population servers, or worse? How will this phasing work out in the world and not just tucked inside our capital city? Hmm, I wonder.

Anyways, I love the show. Keep trucking on GameBreaker!

A WoW without “servers” might also be important for any attempt at open world pvp. Everyone keeps talking about how they want open world pvp, but rarely does anyone talk about how faction imbalance affects it. If there ever is a system where open world pvp is worth while, servers like Illidan would always be horde dominated. If you are alliance on that server, forget about ever getting the reward from the open world pvp because you will be outnumbered 10:1 – Blizzard has to do stupid things like the Tol Barad system to make it “fair”. In a WoW without this imbalance, open world pvp doesn’t have to have Tol Barad like gimmicks as the faction numbers would be a lot closer to 1:1

I think every MMO should develop and integrate some form of a 1 shard system. The pros far out way the cons.

It should not be difficult to implement chat and auction house with this kind of system. I would imagine general chat would be determined by the instance that you are in. Example Orgrimmar10 would just talk to all people in that one instance. They could also create instances for Trade so if you want to trade you jump into this one instance, OrgrimmarTrade perhaps and go spam in that instance.   

One thing that they would have to do is is resolve player names. I suggest adding a surname, just cause it would be fun

The thing is, you really have to look at how much Blizzard makes in server transfers per month or so. If there isn’t a huge profit coming from server transfers, then the whole “One Realm with multiple shards” idea could be a possibility. That system would wipe out server transfers. Faction transfers and race changes would still net some money, but server transfers would be non existent since we only virtually have one realm. Seeing as how Blizzard is a business, they’re definitely taking a lot of consideration into money. It always comes down to financials in business.

The idea is genius, and it should be implemented as a standard for all future MMOs. 

I sure hope they do single server stuff.. but I think AoC is going to beat them to it.(already announced)

No WoW 64 bit title huh…oh well.

My guess is that its just free server transfers… No way they’re redoing the entire WoW server infrastructure.  The Battle.net team already hates the WoW Dev team.  The new talent tree will be the thing that brings back a lot of people.  The talent revamp for Cata is what brought back a lot of people I know. Poke’mon will be the major deal to keep casuals interested.

DDO have been running instanced towns for years now – and that’s a F2P game (OK much smaller scale bit still…)

They do still run seperate “centers” for latency reasons (prolly bandwidth too) – so they have a West Coast center , East Coast Center , EU Center , SEA center (and a couple of others for language reasons)  – that way the player can log into the set of servers that are best for them.

Once in a “town instance” , there’s guild/party chat , trade , “main” and “advice” channels which are center wide , but things like “say” , “yell” and emotes are only local to that instance.

The LFG system is center wide.

Switching instances is as easy as a small drop down box next to the minimap that has “Harbour 1″ , “Harbour 2″ etc to choose from. Takes about 3~5 secs to switch and can be done anytime outside of a dungeon or combat.
When entering a dungeon , even if the players start out in different “town instances” they all end up in the same “dungeon instance”. On exit they all exit back to their original “town instance”.

The AH is also center wide – and in DDO that’s a good thing because of the overall much lower population than WoW. But would also be good for WoW – better supply & more competition = better prices (that is the capitalist nature of an AH right…?)

I think WoW going “serverless” would be great for the game – hope they do go ahead with something like this

About MOP being a free expansion : I think very unlikely – but that said , if it did actually happen would be a genius move from Blizz.
I think it would be totally dependant on how well Blizzard thinks SWTOR is doing and if they feel they need to pull something out of the hat to win back players.

I want mini tyreal, I need something to fight off my stuffed panda army. I also think that if they did the phasing it would be fantastic. My server has too much drama, and watering it down with normal people would help I think.

No servers = win. I like the idea where big groups of people are in one spot. Although I am curious about how the AH and trade channels will respond.

I think the idea was a decent one but it’s way too complicated. It’d be much easier to either A) allow free server transfers (which they may never do because they make $25 per transfer) or B) allow you to pick any realm you want when you log on (basically identical to free server transfers). You also have to think about that if they allow FREE transfers it’ll break world PvP entirely because why would you even pick a server that wasn’t dominated by your faction? If you were getting pummeled on one server you’d simply go to another one. Same thing goes for the phasing you guys were talking about; if you could phase your friends with you could you also phase your enemies? That’d be kinda lame if you could pick and choose who your enemies were no matter how cool it’d be to phase with your friends.

I actually agree with mike b’s comment about MOP being free, It seems like that would bring a lot more money than just straight up releasing Mop. More people would come back, instead of quitting before mop came out.

A server-less WoW would work wonders for stuff like guild recruitment. Also, we would see the real balance of of the Horde:Alliance ratio. Doing something like that for WoW would seem like a huge time and money investment for Blizz, though. Seems more of a Titan idea.

I really hope that they will keep scenarios in the game. The concept sounds really cool. It’s something you can do with a few friends that does not require 5/10/25 people for. Besides, I think it would be a nice way for people to gear up to. Instead of just raids and dungeons, you also get scenarios. As you progress on they get harder.

I also feel that this could be a great way to give guilds thats not at max level another way to get guild xp. Right now there are dungeons, raid, quests/dailys and arena.

If they could pull it off, a server-less WoW would be amazing. Zones (not just Org) would be full of life and movement. The only downside (or perhaps its a positive) is that the server trade stars wouldn’t be a thing anymore. Every server has their trade star, and with a system where servers are fluid and constantly shifting, we wouldn’t see the same people. Though, depending on how chat would work, maybe you would see ALL the trade stars in the same place… wow that would suck…

about serverless mmos, i think its still a cash cow for them to want to do that, especially if they got guild transfers.  like you guys said,  free server transfers? i dont think so, 30 bucks please and thank you.

I think the new thing with the servers is going to be similar to Maple Story, how there are Worlds which then have different channels inside them. Same world, different channels, and can switch between channels on the fly. It would be a fantastic idea to see in World of Warcraft. Awesome show!

MOP could totally be a free expansion. They gave us a free game and an expasion is cheaper, along with the Diablo / WOW playerbase cross over, it seems quite likely.

gotta say that if they do the single server thing its going to make a lot of people mad if they just paid for a server transfer in the few weeks before they change it.

I think all MMO’s should go single server. But i do think that this is what WoW is going to do.

i would really be looking forward to a single server/shard so wont have to level ANOTHER toon so i can play with friends from different servers.

I hope they do change the server because I’m on a 15:1 with the horde being almost non existent, its super had to pug anything.

I tend to agree with you that Blizzard is definitely moving in the direction of getting the idea of servers out of the game completely. If they want to keep the game running, it really is something they need to sort out. The only other big thing that I wish they would do is completely separate PvE and PvP abilities so that there is no balancing act when they have to buff / nerf one or the other.

It is amazing how many people post when free stuff is involved .  Do WTB a Mini Tyreal!!   Love the show, keep it up guys!!

I’d totaly love realmless wow, and i have to agree the comments made by zahrym seem to indicate that they’re going that way. However when peopple found out about MoP one of the devs said that the “speculation about it was overhyped”  and  pretty much lied to everyone so dont know how well can we trust their words.

I *love* the idea of instanced WoW – it makes sense, especially with the pops and balance issues BUT – what I’d like to see (and somehow I don’t think they’ll do if the number of complaints on the official forums is anything to go by) is restrict it to geographical/language areas. It doesn’t make sense to mix them. Yes, you’d have a great variety of people but people do enjoy their ‘local’ guilds/trade chat etc. It makes it more personal and easier to relate with others. It’s not that a (as an example) Kiwi can’t relate to someone from the US, but if you have a ratio in instances of say 1 Kiwi to 2000 Americans, that Kiwi might feel a little bummed and be looking for some more Kiwi’s to hang out with. Just my thoughts (btw, I’m not a Kiwi )

I highly doubt they will ever get rid of all the servers ever because of the names. Adk Lore how he would feel if he had to change his guild name just because someone on some other server had a guild named the same thing and now you cant have both of them together. Same thing with character names.

Great Show.  Being on a low population server I would really like an upgrade to a shard system. Keep up the good work.

Watching this live was great, love Legendary.
Anyway, one idea I came up with for the whole megaserver type thing that Blizz should look into implementing to solve dead/dying servers would be a kind of option to “ghost” yourself onto another server up until you log out; I got this idea when I remember the way I used to play games with my cousins (mostly racing) on my PS2, and we used to take the memory card of the other person, plug it in, get all the info, and take the memory card out, and the info for that game would be essentially “saved” on to the PS2 up until it was turned off. It’d be awesome to just kinda “ghost” myself onto a different server so I can play with friends temporarily without completely changing servers, and without losing the regulars that I see on my server (Arthas) forever.

I would love to have a tyrael model , but i think it would be cool to have a single server that way i could have some chars from another server from when i was playing with friends back in the day with out paying money just to copy a char to another server. Though the AH would be insane with a global AH well atleast for the first few months but then it would stabilize just like it has done after the 4.3 patch.

I really don’t think they would ever do single server in WoW. Why? They make way too much money from server transfers, and have spent way too much on making the  RealID system work across servers. Granted it’s an awesome idea and would alleviate a lot of problems.

There it is.

This whole cross realm/one realm thing isn’t all that unlikely. A lot of enterprise companies do this when server clusters and load balancing. 

Consider something like Netflix (20 million subscribers in the end of 2010, 23 million subs end of 2011) where you’re serving up movies or TV shows (higher bandwidth use than WoW would use) from their cluster of servers.

It’s not all that unthinkable, it’s just something most MMO people aren’t used to thinking about.

If WoW went to one server what would happen to a PC’s name. I like the idea of one server but the outcry of forcing a name change would be huge. Unless of course the name would be become the PC’s name of Realm name, like John of Doomhammer.

when they implamented the cross server dungeons I was soo happy hoping it would make it easier to get in a group as a dps class. I still find myself sitting on my ass waiting in Q. People were expecting MoP to be like last few months of 2012 or even 2013, I was always guessing around July. Seems they are eager to get a press event out earlier too, because they need to hold attention when other MMOs that are to be big still coming out (at least 3 or 4 to note from top of my head). Blizzard should ban paladins like every other tempting ‘exploit’ they let through… lol. I think it quite funny how subjective it is judged, and where the line is drawn where Blizzard takes the blame on their end, enact no punishment and revert things while others not to different is a major ban rampage.

if i personally were to guess what the new server thing would be is to condense battle groups. bringing together battlegroups under essentially one server would still create a massive pool for them to do alot of the stuff envisioned by you guys but could also potentially keep peoples pings acceptable too. or maybe they will just reduce the server xfer fee.

Ok, so blizzard has to be doing something such as eliminating servers. It will not be free server transfers, that idea has actually always been in existence, but it was only in some cases from high pop to low pop servers. They specifically said this would be something amazing, so it wont be something that has been in the game since almost the beginning.

I think something like swtor has but with zero servers. 

I don’t think they will. That would mean that the one server would basically be an RpPvP server. I don’t think everyone would be fine with normals, RPers, and world PvPers playing together.

The one server idea is the only way to maintain the longevity of the game as it ages; even if there are only 500,000 players on any given day logging in, a high point for a large portion of MMORPGs mind you, they all will be able to see who they want to see, and maybe a few more. It’s THE perfect way to avoid the problem of the dreaded “closing/merging servers”. 2/100 USD

For the single server idea they would have to implement some sort of way that guilds could make other guilds their friend. Personally my guild does a lot of events, raids, bgs, questing with another guild. We don’t want to merge since we have our own leadership and progression raid groups but we do enjoy sharing players for pugs and alt runs. The best solution to this would be some sort of guild alliance or guild wide friends list.

If EQ1 can put in new character models so can WoW!

I think this was one of the craziest shows ever but It was very fun to watch. I think that shard system would be a great way to go but we’ll see how everything plays out as more MoP info gets released.

Having a single server would be great, only things I would be worried about is Chat like many have said, also Names i hate it when I make a new char and all of the names I want are taken lol. Also there are a bunch of people on my server that when we see each other in town we talk for a bit then go do our own things. these people not on my firends list they are just people i talk to now and a then. It would kinda suck to never run into those folks again if they just make 1 server with defrent phase’s  other than that cant wait to see if and how they do this.

 I agree that now would be the perfect time for a free expansion, that
would realistically bring back many subscribers and in the long run be
more beneficial to their bottom line. I mean they basically have already
done something similiar, giving Diablo III free with the year
commitment to World of Warcraft. So this is really not a stretch.

In addition, there is no reason Blizzard can not go with dynamic servers
to support any and all populations at any given time. My only question
to this would be is how much would they be losing to paid server
transfers and how does that relate to less server support staff for say
12 servers as compared to 687. Would be an interesting concept and I
wish I could be a fly on the wall in some of these conference rooms.

 The cross server idea is amazing, I really really Really hope they do this! Would make finding new raiding guilds or players to group with so much easier and smooth. Would removed one of the major headaches of raiding and playing with friends.

Yesterday my alliance death knight was able to run my fiancee’s night elf druid through Maraudon cross-server. It was pretty awesome. I really hope you guys are right about the whole server thing.

I’v played on both high pop and low pop servers and both have their benefits.on the low pop servers you sorta get to knowthe other people just through trade chat and you couldn’t ninja items. on high pop servers and with the random groups/raid everybody hits need on items they don’t even need  because theres a good chance you will never see them again.

The challenge modes sound like something they could do in a patch like they did with LFR. So I could see them cutting that. PvE scenarios doesn’t sound like they could do that in a patch really. So I think it would be challenge modes if anything.

Getting rid of realms is a bold thing to do. However I don’t think they will just cut it down to 1 I think the lowest they will go is 3 a PvP, a PvE, and an RP. Because the RPer don’t want the PvPers killing them when they are out in the would doing there PR stuff and the PvEers don’t want those PvPers in their pugs getting that resilience all over them and aren’t there a bunch of noob only severs too? but this make total sense to me.

I don’t think they will do much if anything about the pally bug because if they banned people or something for their F up that will get a lot of bad press and they don’t need that right now.  

That hunter guy is great the only thing that would back it better is if he was green or something I think hunters will get way better in PvP at lest in MoP with them taking out minimum rank.

If there’s one thing I could look forward to, it would be the Challenge modes and pvp stuff. Hopefully those don’t get the cut.

World of Warcraft should go serverless. Guildwars is the same way. Each town has different instances that fill up as more people log on. 

I say the box of Ass is the well murg the servers, but In more of semply why. By keep the server as they are, but you and move from server to server as you wish. So they won’t have go crazy with over number of AH actions or Chat filter. At this moment blizz pay tranfer is died or better went. You can play blizz to have unlimited Movement to server to server. They keep there pay players happy, but keep the money flow going.

 I think this would be the future of gaming where it doesn’t matter what server you are on you will never feel alone or on the server that gets no love.  As I was stationed overseas in Japan some MMOs would really hurt in the oceanic region, not that WoW doesn’t have this issue, but will help other games feel more alive.

I absolutely love you guys, but there’s something you’ve been overlooking with slamming 1 million+ people into one “realm” (even if there is shards like in GW, SWTOR and Rift). 2 words; Character names. If, say, you got 2 million people dedicated to one realm and each account has 10 chars, you’re asking for 20 million different character names. Unless they go the way of guild wars and require you to have a second/last name. I don’t see how it is possible. It’s bad enough thinking of a name on the mid-pop server i am on

I love the show with the comedy and intellect that gives me the ability to have good conversations with my friends about the future of the game (WOW).

I can see them doing the shard thing. All the other MMO’s are using this to help keep a populated look to them and this will help deal with the problem of one realm having huge queue times.

Gary, that Tyrael box is a box off ass. I don’t know, but I’m just speculating.

I would really enjoy the shards idea actually happening. I’m from a low population server and I think it’s kinda disappointing to see the world as barren as it, to be able to go from level 1-85 and not see pretty much anyone without going to a major city destroys the illusion of an MMO “world” to me. Great show also keep it up

I hope they get rid of realms, I would love to play with my friends who are on other realms with our main toons instead of just having to eat it and make new toons together on the same realm even though that is just as fun as playing our originals. 

Would love to see World of Warcraft go in a “server-less” direction. With all the features they’re been adding lately it seems very likely. Keep up the good work guys, fun to watch.

Gotta say though, didn't Hunters receive a buff in Wrath or Cata, but then Blizz took it back because it was just a little too much love?

I see the removal of realms as a good thing. It also opens up the possibility of me killing my Hordie guildmates from another server on my Ally toons. I find this to be a wonderful beyond wonderful thing.

After that viewer video question, I wanna see a some other classes being cosplayed out. Like a druid or something xD
