Are you in the MoP beta?

800,000 people are, which means with only four servers each server has…ermm, a lot of Monks!

With that much server load, can Blizzard‘s tech take the strain? As we pondered last week, perhaps new server configuration is the main motive behind this massive beta roll out.

At last the level cap was raised to 87 and Valley of the Four Winds was opened to the masses of players to jump in and get excited for the new lush, questing area. Though apparently the overriding description of the new content is “linear.” Are the criticisms valid?

Ghostcrawler said a while back that they wanted players to demand stat squishing. From the look of the new jewelcrafting gems, the sound in the distance is that of WoW players picking up pitchforks. We thought they were going to get a handle on stat inflation, what happened?

Tank overhauls, pet battle system reveals and some ghostly changes on the forums adds up to more WoW news than you can shake an ilevel 416 pointy stick at.

  Actually, “chimera” is a Greek word, and the correct Greek pronunciation is “she-meh-ra” (listen to the Nana Moskouri song “Chimera”). So Gary (probably by accident) got it almost exactly right.

    Actually, because it’s a “Greek word,” it is still pronounced kai-mera, according to the history channel, and the science health channel when they talked about
    chimerism; a genetic phenomenon where people can have two different sets of DNA, or babies can have a completely different set of DNA from their parents. Again, I point to frat houses. They use the Greek alphabet for their symbols. Such as Delta Chi Omega. The Chi in that is always going to be pronounced Kai.

      So, were you listening to the Greek version of the History channel? If not, it’s highly unlikely that the narrator knew how to correctly pronounce Greek words; he was just using the English pronunciation that he’s used to.
      
      The same thing happens with a lot of other words (ex., the French word “lingerie”), which English speakers pronounce in a way that has nothing to do with the original language. But that doesn’t mean that if someone pronounces “lingerie” correctly (either because he actually speaks French or by accident) you should automatically assume that he’s “wrong”.
      
      The “name” of a letter is irrelevant. The letter “H” is called “aitch” but the word “hello” isn’t pronounced “aitchllo”. The Greek letter “Pi”, for example, is called “pie” in English but “pee” in most other languages. It’s probably called “pie” in English to avoid confusion with “P”, which is already called “pee” in English (but not in other languages). And, regardless of how you call the letter, in a word it’s pronounced simply as a “P” (i.e., the word “post” is pronounced “post”, not “pee-ost”). So the name of a letter and its sound in a word can be quite different.
      
      In Greek, name of the letter “Chi” is “χι” (pronounched “khee”, not “kai” or “kye”, like in English). Guess what, the frat boys got it wrong. I’m pretty sure they weren’t trying to be fluent in spoken Greek, though, so who cares?
      
      Note that personally I thought the Greek pronunciation of “chimera” would be “khee-mye-ra” (where the “kh” sounds like something between an “R” and an “H”, or a Spanish “J”), but since there’s a song called “Chimera”, sung by a Greek artist, I assume she knows better than I do, and certainly a lot better than the History channel’s narrators (they rarely get foreign words right). Of course, there could just be two similar Greek words, both of which got transliterated to Latin as “chimera”, but which have different pronunciations in Greek.
      
      Regardless of that, don’t be so quick to say someone pronounced some word “incorrectly”; there’s plenty of variation even within English words (leever / lehver, etc.), and that gets even worse when using foreign terms (like “fungi”, which even professional mycologists pronounce in about four different ways).
      
      Gary is not bound by other people’s limited interpretation of Azerothian gem names.

As for the gems, you’re totally wrong, they’re doing it because HAVING BIGGER NUMBERS IS ALWAYS BETTER. why would you want to get more %crit from crit rate when you can have MEGA CRIT RATING!!!! Its way better this way.

Also you guys forgot that even though theres 800k people in BETA, even those who actually log in, live hours apart, so when EU logs in, US probably already logged out. Since its not live servers I dont think theres people logged in at all times.

Finally, if blizz announces MEGA SERVERS… wont people just see that as MEGA server merges? So wow dieing? will people really see the positive aspect of it? or only gaming sites and smart people like you guys see that?

Yahoo!!!! Gary welcome back! I started watching this show BECAUSE of you! You brought life and hilarity to online gaming and reignited my interest in it.

You’ll be glad to know that Mike S was amazing while you were gone and with just a little more practice he’ll be a perfect host. But the formula was kind of off, there wasn’t any of that wacky goofball humour you bring just Mike B’s sarcasm and dry wit and Mike S’s satyr and frantic jokes, now that you are back into the mix it’s perfect.

I don’t even play WoW anymore, but I had to check and see if you were back and I’m glad I did. See you in Guildcast in your spiffy new studio (and please don’t leave too many welts on Mike Schaffnit during set up… but post video… yes…)

Blizzard should look into moving everyone onto a single shard supported by instancing, like in Star Trek Online, while at the same time evolving the instancing concept by having some areas instanced and others single-instance (i.e. open world persistence).

But………… hey! I agree with Josh. Why the hell is parry + dodge there and hit + expertise?
I don’t know why they have to make things more complicated then what they already are.

One cool idea I guess is just to join those 4 stats into 2 stats. Then it could work in two stages.
So, the stat parry/dodge would increases your chance to dodge AND parry. If your stat is high enough against an specific enemy attack you’ll dodge and take no damage, otherwise you’ll still have a chance to parry and take like 30% of the damage, and if that doesn’t work you just take 100% damage of the blow.

Then with hit/expertise this new stat would just increase your chance to hit, period. lol

So internally these stats would still kinda work separately as 2 stats but you would have to gear only for one of them.

Blizzard has an RTS, RPG, MMO, all that are very dominant in the market. However Blizzard does not have a FPS, could Titan be an FPS? Where WoW is a money maker still, will they combine the subscription fee of both WoW and Titan. So if you are paying for WoW then you can play Titan or maybe you pay like 20 a month for the both. An FPS mmo has yet to succeed therefore what if an mmo fps is to be known as Titan.
