Legendary: WoW, No Servers! -- The World of Warcraft Show

Just before the show when live, Blizzard announced that it will in fact be adding cross-realm zones with the Mists of Pandaria expansion for World of Warcraft! But the real question remains: “What type of psychic powers does the cast of Legendary have, and which is the best why to market it?” Just a couple of months back, this very show predicted that WoW would allow for grouping cross server for standard questing. It was the next logical step after cross-server PVP and cross-server raids.

Don your tin-foil hats, kids, Gary Gannon has brought together three of the leading WoW experts in gaming media to talk about the cross-realm zones, subscription numbers, and all the latest news from the number one MMORPG in the world. Mike B aka Fony, Josh Allen aka Lore, and Mike Schaffnit appear on this amazing show of news and commentary: Legendary!

I really like the new intro. the applause was fun and all, but laying out the basic format of the show made me wanna watch it more. Kinda like a newscast saying you’re gonna die if you don’t stay tuned after the break.

So could you see them binding really really low populations full time and everywhere even including the major cities because that would “Merge” the realms without actually “Merging” the realms…

You also cannot do Arena teams cross realm still.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

With the changes in loot for raids, group and questing, should help with cross realm grouping.  Everyone getting a chance to get gear appropriate for their spec.

Its a good question, should blizz combine the economies across realms?  That’s what Arenanet is doing with GW2 and sounds like a good idea.

But then, introducing a gold arbitrage may be an interesting wrinkle to add to WoW economies.

In the FAQ, they mention it is like cross realm raids currently, where you cannot trade items.

Can you please for the love of Balthazar stop saying that.

      • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Had to look up who was Balthazar.  How the heck did I level a Charr Elementalist to level 13 and not learn that Balthazar is the patron god of Elementalist. That’s just not right.

        • http://profile.yahoo.com/ITHF7XKYGVXFAPCDMDJTKHLBBU Lian Wan

Balthazar/Dwayna/Lyssa/Melandru/Grenth/Kormir are Human gods. The Charr used to worship the Titans but that is no longer the case. You SHOULD have learned something about the Titans in relation to the Flame Legion though. If not then ANet probably needs to add a bit more lore there.

I didn’t and don’t intend to make any Charr characters but I thought the Charr character creation mentioned something about murdering their gods?

Guild Wars 2 the Phantom Menace of MMOs.  For me GW2 level 13 was the Jar Jar Brinks of PVE (really annoying leveling).

BTW, love WvW, but that a different game Gate Wars 2.

    • Tyler Ryll

Guild wars 2 isnt very good dude, only thing it does right is pvp and MoP is full of world pvp goodiness

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Steve-Lazarowitz/100000420795554 Steve Lazarowitz

Having played in the Guild Wars 2 beta, I can’t agree with this statement. I won’t put down WoW or any other game for that matter, but I will say that I had a blast playing PVe in Guild Wars 2, so much so that I didn’t even get to try PVP. It’s by far the best PVe I’ve experienced in a game. Mind you, it took a lot of getting used to, because it’s so different from other games I’ve played. Active use of dodge, for example is a must. But the PVe is fantastic.
I’m pretty sure Mists of Pandaria will be a lot of fun too, but I”m already over the standard questing model of most MMOs and don’t think I could revisit it.

      • Lycronis

Sorry, you may not think so, but I’d say you are in the very small minority. I’d even go so far to say that, even in it’s beta state, GW2 is tons more fun than WoW (or any other MMO I’ve played) ever was. Some people fear change, and GW2 is bringing many, so maybe you are afraid to see that. And let’s be honest, maybe you should wait to pass your final judgement on GW2 when it is actually finished. Just a thought.

    • http://twitter.com/Dagus_94 David Gustafsson

I agree on one thing. imo gw2 is the best mmo. BUT nothing can kill wow except blizzard

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kyle-Eggers/100000868131517 Kyle Eggers

Cross server/realm is a bad idea.  Since WotLK Blizzard is been slow making the server communities more and more unstable.  WoW is a MMO a multi player game by adding first random dungeons/instance finders, then random raid finder (glad I quit before that went live), and now this cross server/realm zones just make the server community more unstable.  Some that are okay on some servers won’t fly on others.  Some server have sites like Leftovers for raiding, and there is something to be said for knowing people on your own server and people knowing you.  This is another move that will take that away from the game and make more of a single player game.  I don’t know about anyone else but a big reason why I play MMOs is to play with other people, and to get to know those people and keep playing with them.
When I did play WoW (for six years) I was surprised to find out how many people knew of me and that I was fairly well known.  Some i had gotten a good rep on my server without even knowing it.  and I realized on my server people thought well of me and the guild I and my friends were running.  That won’t be seen as much in WoW with random instance, raids, and now cross realm servers.  This is a bad idea.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Love the idea of cross-server zones. Gives another activity for my Guild, so many possibilities.

You’ve missed so much that the new tools give.
      - LFG is perfect. You get two to four guildies together and run through some heroics. Great if your tank, healer or dps is offline at the minute.
      - LFR is, to quote Forest Gump, like a box of chocolates. Never know what inside. Love getting guildies together for a quick run through LFR.  It may turnout to be a slow moving train wreck (cant take your eyes off of it), but usually gets the job done.  Great for gearing up that guildy that’s a bit undergeared, but has a real interest in getting ready for the “real” raid content.
      - Pugging older Raid content.  Picking up a couple of warm bodies to fill out an older raid is so much easier now.  There is a really good chance your random pug will have a couple of pieces of LFR gear.   So, easy for four or five guidlies to pick up a couple of PUGs and knockout 25 OS (four Drakes up) for the flying mount.

While the Cata raid content has been very uneven, its still been a blast running with my guidlies.  So, while player flirt with other MMOs, my Org city still has multiple raiding guilds where everyone knows your name.

      • Old Ben

        > You’ve missed so much that the new tools give.

To quote the great philosopher Josh Homme, “first it giveth, then it taketh away”. Heroin gives you a lot the first time you use it, too. And, in fact, every time you use it. Slightly less apparent to most of its users is how it affects them in the long term.

Personal convenience and a positive social atmosphere aren’t necessarily proportional. In fact, their relationship is often inverse. Adapt a game to please anti-social addicts and soon they will be the majority of your player base.

If you compare the social aspect of WoW over time (especially if you compare the current situation to the period just before the release of WotLK – when the game peaked in terms of popularity), the difference should be pretty obvious.

        > LFG is perfect.

LFG did more to destroy any sense of community and personal responsibility in WoW than any bug the game ever had.

It’s absolutely perfect for people who essentially want to play alone (or who want to play “against” other players) but need to use others as a tool to achieve their own individual objectives, though.

        > Love the idea of cross-server zones. Gives another
        > activity for my Guild, so many possibilities.

Another activity for your guild? Possibilities? “Cross-server zones” are just merged servers with instanced cities. They’re a bit of make-up to hide the fundamental problem (which is that 99% of the game world becomes useless at max level). Blizzard can’t do full merges because everyone spends most of their time sitting in front of the AH spamming the trade channel, and the performance hit of doubling (or tripling, etc.) the number of players in such small areas would be horrendous.

“You can clutch the past so tightly to your chest that it leaves your arms too full to embrace the present.” Jan Glidewell

Old Ben, correct your numbers.  WoW had dual peaks in subscription, right before the release of WOWLK and WOWCata.  Do I think WoW will ever get back to 12m subscribers, I doubt it.  The carebear nature of WoWLK and unevenness of WoWCata, put a stop to that.

LFG is a tool and it’s all about how you use it. Wish I could count the numbers on dungeon I’ve runs with guildies.  I suspect, I’ve run a multitude more guild dungeon runs since the release of LFG than before. Prior to LFG, when I got a guild group running, trying to replace a guildie who had to drop out was a royal pain in the ass.  Today, if a guildie drops out, I do a quick scan of the guild roster and if no one is available, we pick one using LFG.

I’ve probably thrilled many a solo players, when I show up with raid quality tank, healer and dps.

          • Old Ben

            > You can clutch the past so tightly to your chest that
            > it leaves your arms too full to embrace the present.

And how am I “clutching the past”, when I don’t even play WoW anymore? What an ironic choice of quote.

If your view of “the present” is limited to playing WoW, you need to go out more.

            > Old Ben, correct your numbers. WoW had dual peaks
            > in subscription, right before the release of WOWLK
            > and WOWCata.

You are apparently unaware of the fact that Asia (which accounts for 60% of WoW’s subscriptions) is on a different release schedule from US + EU.

When the West was getting WotLK, the East was getting TBC. WotLK sold a lot (because western players were happy with TBC), leading to a global peak, but western subscriptions started declining within three months (as people actually got to experience WoTLK), and kept declining. Meanwhile, eastern subscription kept increasing (as TBC brought more and more Asian players to the game).

When Cataclysm was released in the West, Asian subscriptions were at their all-time high (leading to the second peak). But then Asia got WotLK, and (as had happened a couple of years before in the West) subscriptions in that region too began to fall.

In other words, there was no “peak with the release of Cataclysm”. In both markets, the peak (in terms of subscriptions and game popularity) happened with the release of WotLK, and was a consequence of the quality and the “social-oriented” nature of The Burning Crusade (the game isn’t even advertised in most countries; people were just bringing in their friends). And, in both markets, the changes introduced by WotLK led to a decline.

            > I’ve probably thrilled many a solo players, when I
            > show up with raid quality tank, healer and dps.

What a perfect antithesis to Kyle’s post.

The great thing about the lack of communication (and the lack of a sense of community) is that you can believe anything you want about how you come across to others.

I’ve probably caused many a woman to have a spontaneous orgasm when I walk past them wearing my original 1977 Star Wars t-shirt. They didn’t actually tell me that, and I’ll probably never meet them again, so I can’t check, but I choose to believe it. No need to thank me, ladies, my belief in my own awesomeness is payment enough.

          • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Back from real life.  Where were we at…

            >And how am I “clutching the past”, when I don’t even play WoW anymore?
            Well, that speaks for itself.

I only comment on MMOs I currently play.  I’m playing WoW from TBC, subscribed to SWTOR (but my sub runs out next week) and pre-purchased GW2.  Played Rift, but left after hitting level 20.

Your numbers still don’t seem right.  While the content was different between WoW east and WoW west, the numbers peaked similarly.

When WoW first peaked at 12m subscribers, WoW east peaked at just over 6.5m subs and WoW west peaked at just under 5.5m subs.

Sadly the chart I’m referencing doesn’t include the second peak at 12m. But I could find:
WoW Cata sold 3.3m during the first 24 hours and
WoWLK sold 2.8m during its first 24 hours.

But, clearly TBC was a much smoother paced release, with constant subscription increases throughout the release.

The real question is will MoP even come close to thoses numbers?

Do you guys not chat with pugs?  Pugs say the darnness things, my all time favorite was a drunk girl saying, “My boyfriend is a bitch, he won’t let me raid with him.” (BTW, turns out he had good reason.)

You would have made a permanent impression while wearing that original Star Wars tee-shirt, if you had talked about getting the “empty box” Star Wars toy and writing your Star Wars program on the a TRS-80.

          • Old Ben

            > Well, that speaks for itself.

Does it? I guess it reveals I’m not a masochist or an addict. Why would I keep playing a game I don’t enjoy (and whose level of player civility keeps getting worse) when there are so many other things to do in life?

            > I only comment on MMOs I currently play.

Why? You think that someone who has cleared all the current content in WoW but no longer plays it isn’t qualified to have an opinion about the game?

Or maybe the game has improved by leaps and bounds between 4.3 and 4.3.4…?

            > I could find: [...]

Considering Cataclysm was launched on the same day worldwide (unlike previous expansions), it’s not very hard for it to have higher sales “during the first 24 hours”.

            > While the content was different between
            > WoW east and WoW west, the numbers
            > peaked similarly.

Yes, very similarly. As I mentioned, in both regions they rose all through vanilla and TBC (*), peaked when WotLK was released (Q3-2009 west / Q3-2010 east), and have been declining since.

(*) There was a big dip in the Asian market during 2009 (due to publishing issues in China), but subscriptions recovered over the next four quarters (following the trend of TBC) and led to the second “global peak”, just before the release of WotLK in Asia (Q3-2010). Since then there are no regional numbers, but both markets are currently “in sync” (playing Cataclysm) and global subscriptions are declining, so they are probably both behaving similarly.

          • http://profile.yahoo.com/ITHF7XKYGVXFAPCDMDJTKHLBBU Lian Wan

I guess that depends on your definition of “enjoy”, but one possible  answer is “because your friends are playing”. In that case the game is just serving as a backdrop for spending time with friends.

          • Old Ben

My friends aren’t masochists, either. ;-)

        • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

The Mist of Pandaria is going to be a blast. With 14 first tier raid bosses and possibilities of world PVP while questing, there is going to be a ton to fun.  Its going to be old school Southshore, Tarren Mill and Isle of Quel’Danis all rolled into one and hopped up on steroids.

This is what I call player generated dynamic content.  The hype train starts here.

          • R Sztejna

Maybe it will be great expansion maybe it wont and will be just a let down like Cataclysm. dont make assumptions that you have no proof whats…..oh wait

The Garrosh thing. If you look at the rehash of RFC there is a force behind corrupting horde members. So Garrosh can be a raid boss, but maybe there is a force behind that and he wont be the final expension boss to kill?

  • Nocti

It’s so simple…you want me to spoil the 5th expansion and the end of MoP okay:
Since blizzard like to take stuff from others and implement it to wow.
“But dont be so sure who the next Warchief will be” so after Garrosh dies everyone wants to be the next Warchief and so begins… The Game…of Thrones in World of Warcraft. Horde splits to multiple factions and the alliance…well the alliance are just there wondering where Anduin Wrynn is or they can just f things up and take out the split up Horde or maybe Varian wants to be the next Warchief? ^^
This way we get multiple factions for pvp and shiz.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

You really do have something there.  The first act is the survival and attempts by the Horde and Alliance to gain favor with the Pandarians. The second act is corruption of Garrosh and his demise. An the final act being the “Game of Thrones” and the eventual reunion of the Horde. With realms racing to see who will be first to crown a new Warchief. (To be even more tinfoil hat, could each realm end up with a different Warchief? Could the alliance even capture or kill one of the possible “Warchiefs.”)

Hmm, more people in zones in a game where quests don’t “share” sounds brilliant, no?

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Yes, with the cross-server realms, the chance of world pvp is back. Horde and Alliance will be fighting over the quest hubs in Pandaria.  Already seen it in the beta, and that wasn’t even a PVP server.  While quests are not automatically shared, I was glad to see quest mini-bosses were shareable.  If you come across a mini-boss encounter in progress and you assist with the fight, you sill get credit for the quest.  Was really glad you didn’t have to wait for the boss to die and respawn or wait for a group invite before you can get credit for the kill.

Im a big fan of the live shows of gamebreaker tv, and even living in portugal, where the shows are late, i have just one thing to say. Why does Josh Allen have to put down all games as trash except wow. You should have more respect for all the people who invested time, and money on projects as big as the ones you usually trash.

You dont need to talk bad or make stupid jokes about other games just to make World of Warcraft big. There is space for the games in the market, and people should be respect. I played wow for 7 years, left cause got tired of alts and doing the same thing every day, and spending miney on a game that did not make me have fun anymore, but i dont trash the game, its a good game. But there are others games out there, and you need to respect them. and specially people who watch this show, because without the people watching not even NETFLIX is saving ur ###.

Its the only show where i see someone trashing other games, and its always you. Respect others!!

Aand sorry for some erros in my english but i think you will be able to read, not so sure if u capable of understanding.

    • http://www.kaiketsu.enjin.com/ Corey Jenkins

You should watch his livestream man. Josh allen plays tons of other games, he tried GW2 and loved it, and tried the secret world and thought it was ok. He also really loved rift before it kind of sunk a bit.

      • http://www.facebook.com/fernando.ribeiro.9085 Fernando Ribeiro

I dont have anything against him, i just say that its not correct to make fun and trash other games, and he did it regarding swtor. Everyone has the right of a opinion, but what i dont like is to trash games like that. There are people that really enjoy swtor and that does not make them worse than those who play wow. I play many games, tera, rift, swtor, and going to play gw2 for sure. And i respect people who dont play them. Just asking a bit more respect for players and those who made the games that invested allot in them.

Because then its just another trolling show like we have in foruns and chats in the internet. Why not try to give positive ideas about stuff rather than just trashing it.

Anyway.. nothing against him or any other member of these show that i really enjoy so much.

All the best to gamebreaker tv staff and just take my comment as a positive thinking about how to approach those who watch.

“LOL , o WoW sucka”.

Not quite the same. WoW doesn’t let you select which realms you want to “visit”, and when people from multiple realms get grouped in the same area they still can’t join each other’s guild, can’t trade, can’t swap mail, etc..

In GW2 terms, WoW’s merged zones are more like a “reverse overflow server”.

Agreed, and GW2 has been in production for how long now? Who knows when they decided to implement the guesting feature. (EA and Blizzard are one in the same to me – they don’t care about the people actually buying their product, they just want the money)

As long as ANet restricts the forums to people that actually own that game I am okay with that. ;)

Extra copies sold but not being played wouldn’t hurt ANet.

Overall, games coping nice features from each other is a GOOD thing. This is also why competition is good for consumers.

As long as those features make sense in (and actually improve) the other game, and aren’t just being copied so they can claim “we have that too”.

I just watched “Into The Abyss”…and it f*ked my mind so much I can’t go to sleep..Now I have to watch GameBreaker Tv to kill the heavy mood.. so maybe I can catch some shut eye…
I see what your doing to me Gary.. I’m scared. (:0

Cross Realm Raiding is the future of this game, let’s be honest…

With this technology implemented we will see a huge resurgence in all around WoW activity, but raiding especially will continue to ride the huge boost it got when old tiers went cross realm.  Websites like Openraid.us have set up amazing services for people to use to organize Cross Realm Raids, and quite frankly I see no reason to go back.

Blizzard, you must make Tier 14 cross realm….you just must!

Is it just me or was this encoded in a super low framerate?

  • Revanhavoc

Mike S recognized it was WoW music playing in the background after 0.2 seconds…Now that is talent.

Crossrealm zones seems kinda stupid, because you find new friends while leveling and cant group with them anymore when you hit max level (or whatever the “not underpopulated limit” is). At the same time it could lead to overpopulated zones where mobs are dead and overfarmed. Especially if you are out there for gathering skills you will have a tough competition.
