With the latest news from Sony about the Playstation 4, viewer questions flood in looking for answers on the new piece of hardware.

Mike Schaffnit and Josh Allen give their expert opinion on all of the changes that could be coming with the new generation of consoles! With Blizzard’s new partnership with Sony, could Starcraft: Ghost potentially see the light of day? Or maybe even some iteration of Starcraft 2 make it’s way to the Ninento WiiU?

The lines are open and the volume is up, so listen up! Caller lines open every Tuesday night at 9:30PST on Skype… so be sure to tune in live and let YOUR voice be heard!  And, if you missed last week’s episode of After Dark, be sure to catch it here.

A complete list of questions in this week’s show follows.

  • With Blizzard now exclusively working with Sony, do you see a SC: Ghost game in the future for Playstation 4?
  • Eidos co-founder has said the Xbox720 won’t play used games. Will this kill them since Sony says Playstation 4 will?
  • How long do you think it will be before we see virtual reality enter into gaming?
  • Why is everything better in grilled cheese form?
  • Why do you think traditional games that were offline, are now being forced into multiplayer despite being accessed via DRM such as Steam, Origin, or even Blizzard games?
  • What do you guys think of exclusive titles for consoles? And have you ever bought a console because of one game?
  • How long will it be before we have toasters that are more powerful than the Playstation 4?
  • Do you think that since Blizzard announced Diablo 3 for the Playstation 4 that maybe they could put Starcraft 2 on the WiiU?
  • How can I stop from dying all the time?
  • In the current gaming market we have had so many ways to pay for the games, what MMO model do you think will be the one that survives?
  • Bashiok asks us what things we do and don’t want to see at BlizzCon

Nice Product placement of the Wheat Thins.

it’s related to streams with MikeB :>
      It’s more like a joke

i disagree with Josh about the used games argument.  sure, it’s not sticker price (which are marked up how much…1000%) but they have to look at it as the people who are purchasing at a discount are people who wouldn’t have paid anything for it in the first place.   the fact is these games get into more people’s hands the way it has been working.  it could be a huge misstep for them not allowing it.

  • Deadnstien

The show is great as always, but it really needs a third person. It would be amazing to see a random guest host since MikeB, sorry Darnell has the baby, sorry, babes to deal with and can’t be on.

        Hi MikeS ^_^
How about we give some trusted callers the option to have a camera ? we have some ( eduardo ) calling often and there you have it. 3RD screen where we see more of the followers.

        • http://twitter.com/MikeSchaffnit Mike Schaffnit

That is a techincal limitation. We are actually using 2 different computers for the show. Any video the callers feed in from skype simply cannot be captured for the show.

          • http://www.facebook.com/inkogni.alex Inkogni Alex

if i somehow make it work i will mail you, does it have to be skype for the caller? we got google hangout

          • http://quintlyn.com/ QuintLyn Bowers

Yes. The callers have to use Skype. It’s set up that way for a variety of reasons.

While I understand what Josh is saying about used games, I just can’t support it. It’s no different from literally every other industry, in the history of the world. Used items have been part of the consumer market since the dawn of time. When I buy a car, I buy used. The car manufacturer doesn’t get anything out of that. If I want to buy clothes, I can buy used. The original manufacturers don’t get anything for that. If I want to buy a house, the original builders of the house don’t get another cut of that. The list goes on and on forever. Every industry, pretty much ever, have had to deal with that. It’s time for developers to stop crying about what everyone else has to deal with and instead offer a more competitive service. Steam is a perfect example. You can get games vastly cheaper on steam most of the time than you can get them used. Valve has reported record profits whenever they lower the prices of games.

What makes video games unique is that they are one of the first industries that have even the opportunity to enforce such an anti-consumer practice as preventing resale of their product. Just because they can do so for practically the first time in human history doesn’t make me feel bad that nobody else wants them to. I for one hate the practice that is becoming more and more common as we digitize that we never are able to own a copy of anything, we merely “license” it. Nothing has changed about consumers or content, we just now have the technology to shaft people out of what they payed for now remotely. Just because we can, doesn’t mean it’s fair or that we should. I’m not talking about piracy, or anything like that, I’m saying that simply because our technology is moving forward, it doesn’t mean that we should have to renounce the concept of ownership.

This, and only this. This shift in the industry of trying to ban out used goods can only be described as a money grab. There is no other reasonable explanation.

What I’m going to find hilarious, and there is no way this doesn’t come to pass, is that this will inevitably hurt game sales. The majority of the market that buys used games does so specifically because either they cant afford titles full price, or are purely unwilling to pay such ridiculous prices.

People aren’t suddenly going to just say “Well I cant get games used for this console anymore, guess I have to buy them from the distributor now.”, they are more likely to just not buy that console all together especially if any other console that may or may not release the same titles, and wont have these kinds of used games restrictions.

About the only thing that could even remotely justify this technology, is if the cost of games on the console implementing it drop dramatically.

Ban the use of used games on your console? Ok, drop your prices to compete with other consoles that allow me to go pickup the same game a week later at a return store for 75% off, or even 6-8 months out for half off.

Totally agreed. Fact is, when you purchase a consumer item you take complete ownership of that thing, and with it the right to then sell it again at a later date if you find someone who’s willing to buy it off you. It’s absurd to limit the ownership rights of a buyer in this one narrow corner of the consumer industry, and it makes me worried that if this starts to become a norm in society then other industries may try to do a similar thing – what’s to stop a phone/TV/car manufacturer from hard-coding your electronic product to your fingerprint to prevent re-sale? It’s a dangerous precedent, and I hope there’s enough of a consumer backlash to convince them it’s an angle not worth pursuing.

Blizzard on Wii U, the 2 greatest companys in gaming as 1? we can only dream of that for now. Its up to consumers to realize that XBOX and PS are nothing in comparison. Nintendo and Blizz have always been my favs and i doubt it will change

. . .And another high street chain of stores closes and all the staff made unemployed! Second hand games market exist because for a lot of people games are just to expensive. Game publishers could lower the price and make the games one “owner” much like PC games are now. But I doubt it will happen because of the level of greed that publishers are showing right now with their current attitude to DLC. DLC (well maybe not for consoles) or more correctly expansion we went to the high street to buy gave us much more content, whole new levels, textures, creature, weapons, etc. .  now Publishers are releasing games with content removed (but still on the disc) and then selling it to us as “DLC”. As gamers we being robbed of gaming content each time or worse being sold sub-par games that have been developed over years and now released in a barely playable condition so they can reap some money back from the whole fiasco. When the publishers start playing honest with their customers then I’ll agree that removing the second hand market is a good thing.

I for one think the move to try and force console games to be connected to the internet to play single player is absurd. You might as well require people to be paying for cable in order to watch a DVD.  There are still plenty of places even in the US where highspeed internet is unavailable or absurdly priced, for the people in those places or for people who for whatever reason just dont want to be connected to the internet, consoles have been their go to mode of gaming. Even for those with good access to the internet it DOES go out from time to time and its just ridiculous to try and make it so that no internet = no gaming. Not to mention the fact that your then completely dependent on that company maintaining its servers properly to be able to play your console game, just think back to when diablo 3 launched, even blizzard a company with more experience maintaining game servers than just about anyone else still had a bunch of login fails and errors for a long time managing all these connections. No project that onto console gaming, want to play megaman? well too bad cause you know you can upload your scores to compete with people online so you have to keep an active connection to the server, but someone spilled their coffee on the keyboard again so no playing for you today.

My uneducated guess on the virtual reality schtick: 5-10 years before we see a breakthrough in the technology, when some university research team or somesuch manages to make a working, brain-controlled VR machine the size of a janitor’s closet. Another 5-10 years until that tech is fit into a marketable, console/computer size product, and yet another 5-10 years before we see a full game on that system, so overall, 20-30 years before VR enters the gaming industry.
