Yeah I the idea of getting rid of servers is a GREAT idea! I have said this to friends in game, and I think other MMO's should follow this model (unless they really have just TOO many subscribers). If you look at a game like DC Universe Online, they use phasing, which is what you are explaining, I think people would stop QQing about server populations. With phasing, you can easily combine things like the AH, LFG, friend list, guildies, etc. You can easily switch from phase to phase in this architecture, and it overall makes people more happy.

I think we all have to keep in mind that things *seem* more dire right now then they really are. I firmly believe that you will see a massive flux of returning players from SW:TOR. That game has been being shown more and more to be an unpolished, derivative turd, and a growing number of people are becoming more and more pissed about it. I really do think we're going to see a good amount of returning players. WOW is simply not viable as a game to return to for a lot of players, and GW2 from everything i've read is minimum 6-8 months out from a possible release. It will likely be late 2012. That doesn't leave a lot of options for players *if* they want to continue playing an MMO.

That all being said, i've been saying Trion needs to at least mention that they're at least working on an expansion. At least acknowledge that its in the works even if you dont release details. Right now thats one of my biggest issues with Rift. I'm excited for 1.7/1.8 with the new 20 man and other content they may add, but i feel like its getting to the point that we're really starting to feel like bandaids rather than a true new expansion.

I personally would like to see a level cap raise, a new set of areas (yes multiple areas) encompassing at least 50% of the original world size in the expansion.

One thing i really HOPE they're not stupid enough to do is follow WOW's model of "Hey its an expansion, so all of your previous raiding is now meaningless and you will get quest items that are better than your Tier 3 Raid Relics because its a level 54 item and those were level 50 items, etc"

RIFT is the most enjoyable and polished MMORPG on the market right now. There is open world content that is both fun and beneficial to participate in, the dungeons are plentiful and challenging as are the raids. The skill system is unique and can be customized nearly infinitely.

The "class" concepts and mechanics that the classes run on are for the most part unique. Show me another MMORPG with a Rogue Tank that has 7 different styles of teleporting.

I'm currently playing SWTOR because of the amount of friends that moved from WoW to SWTOR. I intend to resub to RIFT once I'm 50 on SWTOR.

The key point that kills the SWTOR experience for me is "growing pains" which it has A LOT of. A good majority of the important genre innovations made over the last 5 or 6 years is completely missing from Star Wars. RIFT started with the same bare-bones presentation. The difference is that RIFT started with a fully functional and 98% bug free game which had undergone a majority of successful performance improvements during the massive beta.

RIFT integrated things such as increased pvp rewards, increased difficulties, LFG tool, guild banks, etc, all within the first month or two. They didn't allow their pace of content to effect their focus on quality and modernization of the game.

I am NOT looking forward to sitting through 3 months of the same growing pains I've endured from previous MMO's for yet another time. Chances are I will enjoy RIFT for a very long time to come. I very much enjoy SWTOR but in terms of integration of modern genre tools and features and their dedication to bugs and performance fixes; I feel SWTOR is rushed. I will gladly play SWTOR after they have, in my opinion, "finished" the game. Until then I'll enjoy the story and check out some of the end game Flashpoints but overall will turn to RIFT's lush content and polish for the majority of my entertainment over the next 6 months to a year.

Thanks to anyone who read all of that.

p.s. I'm a veteran of a good majority of other MMORPG's, some of which I still play. I am completely unbiased and the above is my personal opinion and observation. I do not pretend the above to be hard fact or to reflect the quality of the developing companies or the game themselves. I am simply referring to their current states, which can change rather quickly.
