The Republic: Extra Moist -- the Star Wars: The Old Republic Show

Here at GAMEBREAKER, we cannot get enough of the next patch for Star Wars: The Old Republic. The whole panel for The Republic believes that this patch will add a lot to the game that should have existed at launch — on top of the extra content. The question, however, asks the same one that most players have already asked, “Why weren’t these things in back in December?” Our panel tied it to a number of possible factors. First, it’s possible that the BioWare team was looking to see how these systems would be used by the player before acting on it. For instance, they have said this of the guild system multiple times. Or it’s possible — setting possible developer ignorance aside — that the development team, frankly, had other priorities that took precedent. What are other possibilities?

The “Jesus patch” Update 1.2 for Star Wars: The Old Republic continues to make waves amongst fans, as we see from the reactions to the developer Q&A. Our experts from different places in gaming media — Darth Hater‘s Justin Lowe, Massively‘s Larry Everett, and Taugrim‘s Ed Park — discuss with Gary Gannon the impact of the game changes in this episode of The Republic!

The funeral pyre for this game is going to be a sad thing to watch. EA, in all their greed and unethical thinking, will trash this game so fast once the investors realize it won’t be the cash cow that was promised them (1.7m subs for ten years).

As a long watcher of this game, it saddens me that I may be long dead and buried before another SW ip ever gets a shot at an MMO again. For that, I am angry at BW and EA, and will never forgive them.

I can’t help but hold out hope for this one still.  It does have potential.

I’m actually starting to doubt that it can redeem itself. I’m still playing SWTOR occationally, but I’m getting away from it more and more. There is just no point. I’ve got 2 level 50 characters. The problem I see with it in the long run is that it’s SO similar to WoW in its’ end-game, and executing the end-game sub-par to WoW. I’m not going back to WoW, but when I find something better I’m out of this crap for good. GW2 is really salivating. Aion is going f2p today, might occupy me for a week or so. Trackmania 2, playing through Mass Effect 2 again… Tera beta. Nope, no point in clinging to a sub-par Mass Effect game with sub-par MMO elements. It’s sad.

        • Thracen

It’s only been out for a hair over two months. I’m not saying that the game is without its flaws (certainly, there’s quite a few), but I think it’s a bit premature when people say the game is dead in the water before it has even had a chance to get up to speed. Most of the seasoned MMO crowd has grown accustomed to the WoW-style endgame, which is built upon 7 years of trial and error and is not always applicable in the months following the launch of a new game. I think we’ll have a clearer picture of the future of SWTOR by patch 1.4 (~6-8 months after launch) when we start to see a pattern in the way problems appear and are resolved.

          • Jeff Shockey

The problem is the MMO community has become unforgiving in a small timeline, that is the big reason WoW has maintained and lost insignificant subs to other MMOs.  A MMO has to launch with all the bells and whistles MMO gamers have come to consider “basic” and a lot of content and be a smooth launch.  This game, despite what some say, launched with a lot of content and smooth in terms of queues and minimal server issues.

However, the game has been plagued with bugs and exploits, some of which should have been fixed quicker than they were (some still present in end-game, god help me SOA I can’t take it anymore) and is really missing a lot of the “basic” things like a well structured AH system not the clunky one we have, movable UI frames, open world PvP that isn’t poorly thought out thrown together crap…could go on and on.

The short of it is they should have not launched until all the fixes between launch and up to and including what we’re going to get in 1.2 was ready…if they had launched with the fixes and content added that we’ve had so far and will have up to and including 1.2 this would have been the best MMO launch ever and they would have sustained much better short and long-term than I expect they will simply because most MMOers do not have the patience or tolerance for MMOs to take time to fix issues.

I personally am in for the long haul as I am not impatient and will just not do content that’s so stupidly bugged as SOA (we do it 16-man but will never touch it 8-man if our 16 group isn’t all together to do it one week).  I have plenty of alting for story to do and enjoy the PvP in WZs despite issues I still have with it especially as an Op healer.

I can understand your feelings. I still haven’t forgiven SOE for f’ing up Galaxies with the CU

I really like your show, but could you rerun the live show like 14 hours later? I live in europe, and you go live at 4 am for me and got school most tuesdays or a life. I have seen the live show 2 times, and I didn’t feel I got alot more than what I would have if I saw it a day later, but when you start this show by saying “Still laughing from the preshow” or when you keep doing a joke started in the preshow I feel left out, just because my time schedule is nothing like yours.

    • Jay Nielson

So watch it on twitch…  The replays are saved there…

Lunch time. I’m driving down the road to Rudy’s and gettin’ me some EXTRA MOIST.

  • Roger McKay

So, does this ‘authenticator’ cost money?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-Lauritzen/100000133706955 Jason Lauritzen

The physical security key does ($4 + shipping). The iPod/iPhone application does not; the problem with this is that currently once you remove it rome your account, say to up date your iPod’s OS, you can’t reattach it, a problem that they really need to address.

Free App at the APP store.

  • Jay Nielson

Not even sure how you guys could be talking e-sport at this point.  Bioware has shown that they are fine w/ cheating and kill trading.  What else needs to be said?  Where’s the honor in that kind of system?

Also, you guys are giving the game 4′s?  Really?  Lack of endgame and replay-ability is a serious problem.    How many times can you stomach running the same quests and being forced to listen to story about go kill 10 wolves?  This is a single player game w/ a few mmo aspects thrown in.

And the correct answer to the viewer question, “What won’t be in patch 1.2.?”  A lot of subscribers is the correct answer.

Boy do the staff seem bored with the game, minus the host. Gary is like, “what do you think about ______!” and they’re like, “uhhh,” “eh”, *nod*.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1339406775 Matthew Riddle

I guarantee you we’ll see players return, even for just a month, for 1.2. I don’t think they’ve lost a whole lot in the ~ 2 months the game has been out, but I do think we’ll see returners for the “jesus” patch.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Johnson/1353890372 Michael Johnson

The biggest addition in 1.2 is a FP OP and WZ

1.1 added a FP and OP.

What makes you think this patch will save the game?

  • Roger McKay

    Nice BBT reference, there, Ed.

  • Roger McKay

NOT in 1.2? Multiplayer space combat.

weird…. if you know what i mean

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-Lauritzen/100000133706955 Jason Lauritzen

I’d say 2.5/4, at best, hopfully 1.2 fixes the issues that are around.

  • http://twitter.com/ggKawolski Stephen Jensen

game reviews you say? Cough* Mikeb* cough…..

  • Youngster419

I’ve got on for you Gary.  Hope you like it :)

    Don’t be too late.  Authenticate!

  • Glangerad

It’s kind of sad to see this show, and many of the posts, turn into the typical forum troll that harps away at the subset of issues all games have. I’d be very interested to see if anyone can give an example of a game that had 0 issues. I’ve never heard of a game release that stayed at version 1.0.

It is crazy that some players think that a game gets 3 months to answer all issues or it’s a failure (this is not a ping at Larry). I understand that there are people with ADD that burn through content as fast as they can and get bored with things a few months after they have it, but (in my opinion) that is not the audience that MMO’s are designed for.

Trust me, if they fixed all the things that were discussed on the show today, there will be a new list of issues to discuss tomorrow. The most successfull MMO of all time has proven there will always be something for players to be grumpy about (even after 7 years).

I think it is important to report and discuss the issues, but they do not need to be revisited every week like it’s the only thing going on with the game. Negative breeds negative and most of the players on the show think the Dark Side is more fun. Maybe there should be a bit more balance brought to the discussion.

I feel why should I pay the purchase price of the game then 3-6 months sub to before they get the basics right?  Why do so many put up with it? I know I didn’t my time is valuable and I do not waste it on half finished games.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MEWT4RYEFTT2WHAPEUCGFNVXEA Shark

You see Perk, you don’t have to sub before the basics right. You can watch the forums and shows like this until they announce that it is good, AND THEN SUB. Unless you live in Uzbekastan, where it IS mandatory to sub to a game on launch.

    • pc11

What you fail to understand because maybe you really havent played that 7 year old mmo and others is that SWTOR launched with MANY MANY basic features of a modern mmo missing. PLUS the ones they did put in are crap, boring, full of bugs.

If this was a buy the box and play game then yes I would not mind waiting for the fixes and new features, however I will not pay a sub while the developers work on things they should have before launch.

I already sold off my CE with lvl 50 top geared toon anyway. Because the game was so easy I got everything on the first month. And no, going through 50 levels to listen to other average stories is not worth my money and time.

      • Glangerad

        Cool story bro.

  • http://www.facebook.com/davidallmighty David Cohen

I think we need someone who plays the game hardcore on this show. Still not having someone who does endgame every week, and/or a guy who has multiple characters at max level makes a lot of the show a guessing game how things are with many topics you bring up. I am someone who is on this game for a ton of hours, have 2 and close to 3 max toons of different classes. I raid and have all nightmare modes on farm. Not saying you need to hire me to be on the show, but someone like me would really help I think. Still like the show, but the fact that you guys aren’t always verse in your topics sure brings them down. Although I wouldn’t mind a new or part time job on the side….

  • Erase34

    Larry Evritt(sp) is a faggot

  • http://twitter.com/jtlowe83 Jason Lowe

there is a authenticator app you can get for free on iphone or android market, if you want the actual keyfab authenticator you can buy that directly from bioware.

    • Roger McKay

Buy it? I am not going to spend more money to make my account secure. That is BW’s responsibility.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000143342642 Kyric Connell

then get the free app for your smart phone.  It’s only partly BW’s responsibility, they can not however stop you from opening that email that has the keyloggers, or going to that website that has keyloggers, that’s your responsibility.

  • Erase34

I took 5 minutes out of my life to make an account, just to say this… Larry Evritt(sp) you are the biggest faggot I’ve ever heard speak. You indecisive piece of shit do us all a favor and stack your star wars memorabilia into one large pile… somehow attach your queer orange headphones to the ceiling and then wrap them around your neck… proceed to jump off the pile of junk you have and make this world a better place. Fat dude you’re ok, and Taugrim you’re a decent player just a tight ass. good luck with the show my only request is get this faggot off here please, and thanks.

  • http://twitter.com/Titley07 Dan Titley

so im a carebear hermet? lol Larry is right i think except the fact that when you try to work as a team on republic people just dont bother….

  • Randy McRandom

I have heard a few people talking about how they need a “hardcore end game guy” on the show.  I am sorry but there is nothing hardcore about end game in swtor.  It’s easy…..and buggy.  If you really want in depth discussion on end game and things you need something like damage meters.  You need some kind of metrics to monitor what is going on.

I just got killed by something…what was it?  How much damage did it do?  Was it buffed in someway.  When should be hitting cooldowns?  Is my rotation correct?  Are their aspects of the fight that lend it favoring a certain class?  We have zero metrics to look at so what would you talk about?

If you want hardcore discussion you need hardcore mechanics, fight progressions, and (wait for it) some kind of tracking system for ability and damage.  I went through all end game and nothing (and I mean really nothing) made me excited.  Sorry to see this game go down but I quit early in the month and have no plans to go back, even with the patch (which should have been the launch version) and with a few really good looking games on the horizon makes it even easier not to play.

  • mcsumo

Enjoyed the show. Good to see Ed back. Still haven’t got round to opening my SWTOR box but I guess I will soon and see what you guys are talking about. :)

  • Wolfdreamer101

Wish people would stop hyping the Authenticators so much.  Yes they help, but I have friends that still got hacked even WITH an authenticator on their account.  Bottom line is that they don’t prevent stupid.

  • Revanhavoc

Extra Moist? Hmm…I wonder what this could mean, an inside joke with chatroom perhaps? Tune in next week to find out with some pics maybe…hehe

And before Ed comes in to try and explain, don’t worry man, I was there. I am always there. Watching you. You Elitist. Watching and waiting. Waiting in the shadows of Ilum to gank, I mean strike! I mean strike.

    Yeah. I’m coming.

    And I’ll also be waiting.

What’s with all the hating on raiding? This is kind of perpetuating unnecessary hate. I’ve been raiding for over a month now and it’s always been fine at worst and great at best. The worst bug I’ve seen was some glitchiness on one boss in EV, which was fixed weeks ago. The only bug in raiding right now is that loot thing, and that can easily be avoided using group loot.
