Gameplay: Runic Games Torchlight 2
15 Comments

Gary Gannon,  Schaffnit and Mike B team up and try their luck with Runic Games latest release, Torchlight II.

Like the original Torchlight, Torchlight II features randomly-generated dungeons for the player to explore, and numerous types of monsters to fight for experience and loot. Torchlight II maintains the same basic gameplay as its predecessor, but features overland areas with multiple hub towns, and a longer campaign. Other new features include time of day cycles, weather effects, and a redesigned user interface. Players are able to customize character appearance with choice of sex, face, hair style and hair color. Additionally, several elements from the first game return, such as pets, fishing, and a retirement system.

Good shit, loving the series. And fhe fact you titled it with a season/episode group release terminology is pretty nerdy/neat as well, kudos;)

And you know what, you’ve sold me. I’m gonna buy the motherfucker right f. now.

Everyone is going to pretend this game is better than it actually is just out of some weird spite towards Diablo III.

Totally agree with you on T1. I think what hurt it most was the lack of multiplayer. They’ve fixed that with this game, playing multiplayer hardcore veteran mode with my friend has been just great. “Dude, one more dungeon!” “Er don’t you have a meeting in the morning… in four hours?”

Now, I never got D3 so I don’t have any way of comparing them myself, but my friend got his copy of D3 at launch. The 2 biggest things he pointed out in terms of how the games are different:

      1) Speed. You move much faster in T2 and most of the mobs can’t catch you if you run. This allows for slightly more interesting combat. You can effectively kite and line or bunch up enemies for big AoEs. Also the pace of the combat also felt faster to him.

      2) Loot. At the end of the day this genre is about the loot. According to my friend, the loot tends to be more satisfying and he looks forward to sorting through his inventory because he’s almost guaranteed a useful upgrade every time. As much as he enjoys the AH feature in D3, he also believes that to be the reason the majority of the loot in D3 to be lackluster.

well, TL1 certainly had issues, such as the skill system did not encourage you to upgrade your skills with anything other than minor percentage increases, and of course lack of multiplayer. both of these things, among others, have been addressed by the devs. The game is much more like the spiritual successor to Diablo II now, and it is made by ex blizzard north employees, much of the original developers of Diablo II and LOD, of course it is going to be compared to Diablo, to NOT compare it would absurd. Also, I don’t follow your logic that (especially not having played the game) the game is somehow not an improvement over TL1 because it is a Diablo-like game.

Your logic :  ”I got bored of my $20 singleplayer ARPG before i finished it” -> ” the sequel must be overhyped because D3 was bad”

      …wut?

Also, people did not praise TL1 because of D3 hate, they praised it on it’s own merits. TL1 came out in October of ’09, well before anyone knew D3 would suck, so the fact that you didn’t like it is irrelevant, a shitload of other people loved it.

I’ll tell you what TotalBiscuit said in a mailbox question about this (paraphrasing) “it would be like, John Carmack leaving Id, taking most of the dev team with him and then making a new studio which then goes on to release the spiritual successor to Doom 3, and then Id’s new team of people comes out with their own Doom 4 which receives HUGE flak from the community about poor design decisions. You would EXPECT people to compare them,”  (this is obviously ignoring the fact that Doom 4 is already in development by Id for some time for the sake of argument )”
