The Republic 104: Ed's Last Stand
28 Comments

This week on The Republic. Ed Park makes his last appearance on the show but don’t fear you can still catch him each and every week on Buildcast our PvP and theory crafting show.

Topics on this weeks show include:

  • Big Class Changes Coming In Patch 1.4
  • NPC And Social Gear
  • How PvE Changes Affect PvP
  • Quickslot Bars And You!
  • Legacy Changes And Renames
  • What Do You Think Of SWTOR’s Story?

  • tommythepower

Yeah get someone on the show that actually plays the game and loves to pvp and have knowledge about the game.

    • http://twitter.com/lifensoul Steven Whiting

Which Ed did, for ages.  Gary doesn’t even play anymore so you could say the same about Gary.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/4ZW4CE3J3XWWNHFWORYZ34QEVE Bastin

You’re right. The biggest poser is the host. Get a host who actually plays the game and doesn’t try to evade the fact that he doesn’t play the game with shitty jokes and an annoying persona. Gary no offense bruh, but you suck pretending to know shit about this game.

        • http://www.facebook.com/davidallmighty David Cohen

He isn’t pretending, he will tell you all the time he hops around games like mad. He also hosts other shows he doesn’t play. I also watch this and other shows and I don’t play those games either. But that is how these shows are. If you don’t like it, then don’t watch.

          • Ravenstorm

            Amen. Don’t crusify the Gajesus.

        • http://twitter.com/MattProtagonist Matt

Wow, that’s quite a bashing. There is no way Gary can play all the games he covers, but he’s a good host. There are few times where I feel Gary needs to do more research. He’s more of a discussion initiator rather than the one with the knowledge. The other hosts is there for just that. Many of Garys points are simply from general MMO knowledge, which is obvious, and he often asks the other hosts if his points hold true in this game and what they think.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Bergevin-Jr/1393526370 Jim Bergevin Jr

I wouldn’t necessarily agree in that Gary is the Host/Moderator so him not playing isn’t as big a deal to me as long as the “guests” on the show do and can speak knowledgably about it. So yeah, Ed leaving isn’t that big a deal since he hasn’t played the game in months, but there certainly needs to be a good PvPer on the show to talk on that subject.

SWTOR should have been with GW2 gameplay and exploring.  Would have been awesome.  Right now its just WOW star wars style with annoying dress up companions.  Can not even see myself play it when it goes f2p

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/W76UOX2IDTRMMYTPASSJDLXLRM Bob

So true. I was thinking about that when playing GW2. If you put a Star Wars skin over GW2 and replace underwater combat in 3 dimensions with space combat and ships, people would still be talking about how amazing SWTOR would be. Such a wasted opportunity for BioWare.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Bergevin-Jr/1393526370 Jim Bergevin Jr

But that’s exactly what Justin was talking about at the end of the show. Games in all the other genres use the same basic mechanics (FPS, RTS, TBS, MOBA, etc.), yet it seems only in the MMO genre do players bitch and moan constantly about gameplay being the same. GW1 and GW2 have tried something different, but all it becomes in the end is a niche. When you have the “traditional” model represented in Ultima Online and World of Warcraft, one of the longest lived and the biggest MMO, respectively, the fact that other games play like them is not a bad thing.

        • N Carrott

Actually, when Justin was saying that, I was thinking about how much Guild Wars 1 and 2 were alike and how it felt like just another reskin… >.>

  • Spat Simonton

The CC change for troopers is fine, in addition they were given a silence that is 30 meters. The silence should be fine when movin into the 10 meter cc range.

The changes will adjust paceing. That is all.

The new operation looks sick, i cant wait.

  • N Carrott

Not a fan of Ed leaving. He was my favorite to watch and learn from. :

    • http://www.facebook.com/Jamandos Joshua Lee

Then watch buildcast as well, the show may focus on GW2 but the hosts go heavily into pvp tactics which you can adapt for Swtor or any game really.

      • N Carrott

I can only handle so much Guild Wars 2 before my mind overloads from the spam-casting animations. @.@

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shawn-Hargrave/100003202374593 Shawn Hargrave

just goes to show you the last real pvp’r has left gb and swtor for gw2 like the rest of us. Rage on justin you and the carebears on darthcarebear will soon be holding your protest with coh people

    • tommythepower

Hate to breake it to you but the only carebears are the ones playing gw2, a game that is so easy it’s just plain silly.A solo game for bad players. And alot of pvp players are alredy leaving gw2 for those reasons, over hyped delux. Not to mention pve is a total joke compared to other mmos were pve actually is a challenge.

      • BrentonB

lol@tommytheignorant who probably hasn’t played the game past the starting zones. if so, it’s obvious you haven’t experienced any of the dungeon content. as for pvp, to generalize that pvpers are quitting the game because it’s a solo game for bad players is nonsensical and idiotic. tournament pvp is based on teamplay; not soloplay. if they are playing bad teams, it’s because their own team sucks, or they are queuing into tournament games that they know are easy wins. overall, your comment shows how oblivious you are to what gw2 has to offer, especially when compared to what’s available in other mmos.

      • Jant0n

         >”Hate to breake it to you but the only carebears are the ones playing gw2,”
Really? Got any proof to back up such an outlandish statement?

        >”a game that is so easy it’s just plain silly.”
That would be a subjective point.

        >”A solo game for bad players”
It is a solo game if you play it as one. The game encourages interaction between players, imo. The systems in place (shared gathering nodes, no mob tagging, and benefits for rezzing other players) have made me see the other players as helpful and not a hindrance.  The second half of your argument is demonstrably fallacious.

        >”And alot of pvp players are alredy leaving gw2 for those reasons, over hyped delux.”
Once again, you have no proof whatsoever. Even if your premises were true, you would have no access to the data of how many people are or are not playing GW2 and why they are or are not playing.

        >”Not to mention pve is a total joke compared to other mmos were pve actually is a challenge.”
That is subjective and could only be held as an opinion. It would be nice if you could stop holding up your opinions as fact.

      • Dixhallpike

As Janton arguemented all your points very well I’m only going to point one of your statements out.

“A solo game for bad players”. I have never Ever played an mmo wich was a bigger solo game than Swtor, and I have never Ever played a more sociable game as GW2. That statement alone shows how you are a bad troll and have no idea what you are talking about.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shawn-Hargrave/100003202374593 Shawn Hargrave

I wasnt trolling first off second i dont see anyone leaving gw2 for swtor lmao aawhahahah that was dam funny. Swtor is the solo game for bad players lolz.

You keep defending a game that lost close to a million people and counting  now. A game that has gone f2p before it even made it a year defend away enjoy your “new” armor set thats the same set prior only different colors now.

What gw2 has shown is how lazy and stupid devs have become in other games. There aint no carebears in gw2 btw they wouldnt last 2 seconds which is why justin and the darthcarebears stay in there safe little game.

The people who leave gw2 are the weaksauce that cant handle a balanced game and are mad b/c they cant play an op class. Gw2 is based on skills swtor is based on gear and comforting scrubs to make them feel good

Honestly I am shocked that the other hosts haven’t left yet…. oh wait I know why, one is a huge SW fan boy and the other runs a SW fan site…. Not to troll, but I can understand why Ed would step out for a game he no longer plays or stands behind. Ed is and has always been honest, and I applaud him for bowing out instead of pretending like he cares to be on a SWTOR show. I am really not trying to troll, just saying I am shocked the show is still rolling along. I quit a couple months ago, but I still watch to keep informed since I am hoping with enough changes it might be something I would go back to. but thank you for keeping me informed on the game that I hope sooner or later delivers a quality product.

I was actually on the fence about playing (paying) an MMO but after watching Taugrim’s stuff on SWTOR I actually bought the game and have played for about six months on and off since January. Now that Ed is leaving the show, I unfortunately won’t be watching gamebreaker.tv anymore but thx of the good times. ps no time for GW2 either and fantasy is so 1980s.

Gary’s a great host,as long as he doesn’t screech “PVP POWWAHHHH!!!!!!”When he does that I get those “Mad Dentist” dreams, and he’s the patient,no anesthetics

  • Mj Bhurst

They should add Chat Bubbles to Cantina areas so that they only activate once you’ve crossed the threshold and entered a Cantina. This would get more people to hang out in Cantinas, and make the RPers happy at the same time, without weighing down fleet performance with endless seas of pointless Chat Bubbles.

Hmmm… I’m gonna go post this in the suggestions forum on SWTOR.com

I think this was my fav show, really interesting convos, It’s so funny what Larry said about why he played with the star wars ip. I could relate to literally every word! I loved swg and played until the last second when it logged me out. I’ve searched for a similar game but can’t quite scratch that itch. The reason being I want to live in the star wars universe in game I’m not into world of warcraft medieval type things. I do enjoy swtor when I excepted that its not swg but that took about 6 months of searching the game and wanting to explore. I also agree with gary (who sounds like he was a big swg fan too) the social aspects of the games that keep you playing, in swg we used to go fishing hang out in the city, have partys every sunday with pvp battles pve battles which we could set up in a city with literally 400 ewoks you could explore do quests craft so much stuff!! This is what I’m looking for in a game but in a social star wars setting. Of course I’m looking at swg emu but I’m wondering if id get the social fun I did in swg even though I know a lot of people left there were always people to play with and could find people in mos eisley just hanging out. Its incredible a game that would’ve been coming up for 10 years old soon could be so far ahead in terms of programming  that we’re still talking about what it had to offer today.

This cast would do well to find people who still enjoy the game. And before I enough onslaughts of “No one does, herp derp!”, I want to say that I play both this and GW2 regularly and enough them both immensely.

But Gamebreaker either needs to have the people who have the passion to invest into the game or they need to stop pretending. It’s tiresome to see the spread of MMO coverage on this site nowadays. It’s narrowly focused to the detriment of a game like TOR, which is has parity with most competitors. Bottom line, we get it Gambreaker. We know what your favorite game is but if you want to pretend to have an interest in MMOs or TOR, then get people who are enthusiastic. No offense but Gary probably should go. Ed’s departure was written on the wall anyway. So get people into this program who actually give a damn. It’s not as hard as people will pretend it is.

To play Taps for some one leaving a show and then calling it “Crap” when turning it off shows a complete lack of knowledge and respect for which it stands.  Gary I like you but you lowered in points in the respect pool for me!!!
