The Republic (SWTOR news video) Ep123

This week on The Republic the SWTOR news show, we have some financial info from the EA third quarter earnings call and… a whole bunch of worrying from the SWTOR forums.

EA’s third quarter earnings call is in and if you were hoping for numbers, there weren’t a lot.  Nothing was said about subscriptions, active players or profit directly from SWTOR.  However, it does seem that people have responded positively to SWTOR‘s free-to-play conversion.

Forum woes

In other SWTOR news… People have concerns, complaints, anything else that starts with a ‘c’?

First up are concerns about the lack of info on the upcoming expansion.  It does seem small for an expansion, but we may have to face the fact that that’s all that will be coming out.

Next up.  Apparently some of you would like to have animal mounts.  Of course, there are some who seem to think that it might be a little silly to see an animal running at the same speed as a machine, but it could happen.  Would animal mounts make EA more money?

Another player voices concerns that Bioware may decide to boot free-to-play members from servers whenever a paying player decides to log in.  Would they really do this?

And finally… People want to know… Why does the cartel store get all the cool stuff. (My theory… Because people will pay for cool stuff.)

All that, plus your viewer questions round out this week’s episode.  And of course, if you missed last week’s SWTOR news you can get it all here.

Definitely a slow show. Lack of news is teh suck. BW is being pretty tight lipped about everything these days, and much of their drama has been reduced. I’m hoping something happens to make Gary rage next week. =)

Oh if only you guys knew what is coming in the SSSP!! (i.e. Capitol Ships).

In terms of lower expectations for games that are F2P vs. B2P vs. Sub-based. I think it should depend on the game itself and the goals of the developer and the publisher. However, the reality is as Gary stated – F2P and B2P games have lower expectations (GW2 being the exception). If SWTOR was designed from the ground up to be F2P/B2P but BW and EA had the same expectations of the success of the game along with the hype they put out, then expectations shouldn’t be any lower. However, it still is incumbent upon gamers to properly manage their expectations by doing a little digging beyond the usual hype of a game and use common sense on what is reasonable to achieve in a game with the technology being used and what is a developer’s pipe dream. I did that with SWTOR and it met my expectations completely, and at this point, exceeded them because I am still thoroughly enjoying the game and looking forward to my play time. No other game in recent history has done that since Guild Wars 1.

As a consumer we shouldn’t have to lower our expectations for Free-to-Play games or Buy-to-play games. Every game should be judged for themselves. No two games are the same.

Anyone against the addition of animal mounts is just jaded and selfish. Even if they don’t like it, more choice and variety in cosmetic features is a hallmark of mmo’s alltogether, not just WoW. And those that say, “oh but it breaks the lore, seeing an animal mounted on the fleet would break the precious lore” Yea..because riding around on a glorified snowmobile inside of a spaceship isn’t lore-breaking…or even realistic.

I say to the jaded gamers in swtor, stop standing on your soap box on issues like these because all you do is limit the game dev’s with all of your whining and bickering about lore. Why don’t you stop and think that maybe SWTOR should start creating it’s own stories since it’s based in a  different time-period then your precious movies.

Oh Em Gee guys that bounty hunter riding a bantha is sooo horrible looking, it’s making me hate this game. The 40 people riding around on hovering thrones with people clipping through them look perfectly fine tho. …Give me a break!

Animal mounts only make sense – it was shown in the movies (Stormtroopers on Dewbacks, Tauntauns, whatever Obi was riding in #3). Heck, we even have the winged thing on Alderaan as a taxi, so animal mounts need to go into the CM (maybe have one added to the CE vendor to shut the QQers up about that – I am a CE owner by the way).

As far as lowering expectations, to me it depends on what they are advertising.  Planetside 2 is not a game anyone expected little from.  World of Tanks came out of no where, and I think it’s an incredible game.  I’ve been playing it since beta, and I’ve played World of Warplanes since alpha, and I think they have another hit on their hands.  I think free to play just removes the barrier to entry, it doesn’t and shouldn’t be an indicator of quality.  I think as time goes on it won’t be.  At least not as much as it is now.

gary i love your haircut (“garecut”) excited about free 2 play show. I spend a lot of time playing free 2 play games because I don’t have a job and spent most of my money adopting a dog.

I really appreciate the idea of going to the forums to see what people are talking about. That is a great touch to any show that isn’t full of news and makes the show look more about the game. This is such a good episode, one of my favorites.

I do agree with that – it was quite an interesting segment. I would like to see them do it for the other shows as well and make it a regular or semi-regular feature.

On the other shows, they seem to focus on the game developers response to gamer posts.

ZOMG Gary has ears……..HE HAS EARS!

    Good show!

  • GrindedStone

Why is this still a show?  Gary doesn’t play TOR.  Ed Park doesn’t play TOR.  Justin can’t get a decent framerate.  That leaves Larry.  The Larry show…

Blah, Blah, Blah, Who cares…  This game sucks.  This show sucks.  Flames to you, everyone!  I hate you all, die soon please.  lulz lulz lulz, have a nice day.
