SWTOR Patch 2.0 Is Live On The PTS - The Republic Ep125 (Video)

This week on The Republic, SWTOR patch 2.0 hits the PTS, repair costs go up and Gary Gannon rage quits?

The SWTOR patch 2.0 has hit the PTS and has brought more than a few things with it.  Gary, Justin and Larry discuss the fact that they finally have the ability to copy a character over to the PTS.  In addition a new character booster helps new players who want to get to the higher level content quickly.

SWTOR patch 2.0 also brings a new operation with it titled Scum and Villany.  No one is really surprised by this.  Operation eternity vault gets a new nightmare mode version and new legacy achievements allow for unique titles and rewards.

Other additions have been made in the form of hard mode options for the flashpoints Hammer Station, Athiss, Mandalorian Raiders and Cademimu.

Other changes that have been made include adjustments to classes, the addition of a new priority mission terminal for all daily, weekly and ‘high-priority’ quests for flashpoints, group finder, warzones and other ‘repeatable content’.

/RAGEQUIT

Ilum’s back and it’s time to talk about it. Well.. Kind of… It turns out there may not be as much PvP to the PvP area as one would think.  In fact, Gary would like to know exactly why there’s so much PvE in his PvP.  And what’s with this exploding orb business that results in everyone standing politely in line to drop them off? No.. Really.. Larry has pictures. People stand in line in PvP now.  Who knew?

Yeah.. It’s not exactly what we think of when we think PvP either. In fact, I think Gary’s head may explode.

You know what.. I’m just going to leave it here… You can watch Gary’s reaction to the whole Ilum thing in today’s episode.

All that and more.  And, as always, if you missed last week’s episode, you can check it out here.

This was a funny episode Gary s Anger was like a walk in the park. He had hate but he did not use it, he had passion but he did not use it…His Anger was like nothing I have ever seen. He was to funny,.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1260066056 Steven Diaz

The way you put it was quite poetic and extremely accurate.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=754168227 Len Hobbel

He was funny….I was playing swtor listening and laughing my but off.  If I get anger in a game or because of a game I break stuff…he just made me laugh lol Hope he keeps it going

  • patrick.kershaw

Funny ep, but seriously I stayed up til 2am to watch it and you ragequit.  I understand your frustration with it, but most people I know gave up on Ilum a long time back so the fact it still doesn’t work properly isn’t that surprising.  They even said that they’ve kind of given up for now on oPvP so i’m not too bothered by it.

On a side note Eternity Vault hasn’t had a new nightmare mode added, it’s the same nightmare mode it’s always had.  Terror from Beyond is getting a new nightmare mode but that hasn’t hit the PTS just yet.

Other than that great work and keep it up :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1260066056 Steven Diaz

The episode was about 40 minutes, which works out well as most of their episodes are within that time frame.  He rage-quit a bit early but still the show was long enough that it matched the rest in terms of length.

  • http://www.thejerseywife.com Jersey Wife

    This game needs Disney.

  • http://www.facebook.com/benni.nord Benni Nord

They should just make Illum a sandbox

  • Marc Allen

Lol poor Gary, guy is so damn disappointed xD

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1223768682 Tommy Amundsen

No point watching this show when all Gary do is hating, and when one see all the other crap games he talks so nice about you just know he is paid to hate and troll.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1260066056 Steven Diaz

Truth is, Gary hates on this game much more than others because he’s an old SWG player.  This is due to the fact that we have incredibly high hopes for the game and truly believed the hype created by Bioware pre-release. I feel the same rage and their decisions on “improvements” have been horrible.  They seem like they’re at a loss.  As for him being nicer to other games, I completely agree.  GW2 is a piece of trash that’s just very polished and looks really nice.  It lacks any meaningful content unless you like to farm for loot skins.

      • http://twitter.com/arsenicspritzer ArsenicSpritzer

Yeah, that polished trash isn’t fooling anyone. You can tell by the rounds of ANet layoffs and how NC Soft has been distancing itself from it.

Oh wait … ANet is hiring? WTF?

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1260066056 Steven Diaz

No need for that tone.  Clearly it was my opinion and I never said the game was dying.  Don’t be so quick to jump to conclusions while attempting to defend something you like, it does nothing other than make you look bad.

      • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

While I’m not so harsh about Guild Wars 2, GamebreakerTV does treat that MMO with kid gloves.

        • http://www.facebook.com/kaj.udanga Kaj Udanga

I reckon it’s because Arenanet is very capable at communicating their intent, explaining why they’re doing things in a way that makes sense, and following through on what they’ve promised. You don’t have to like what they do, but knowing why they do it creates a relationship of trust — something that Bioware and Blizzard used to have but wasted.

    • http://twitter.com/arsenicspritzer ArsenicSpritzer

Of course, it has absolutely nothing to do with the game having sucked, the game falling further into a state of suck, and Gary’s high hopes being routinely dashed by the all around level of suck, that SWTOR provides.

This was never a good game and time has not been kind to it. I once blamed the developers for this because their background was SP RPGs and they had no experience in bringing an MMO to market. Now they’ve had time mature, evaluate, learn and respond — and they still don’t know what they are doing.

Oh, and I’m not an old SWG player, but I am an old SW fan. That’s where my “hate” comes from and it comes free of charge.

  • WarHistorian
  • WarHistorian

“. . . anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.” Was a fun show, and I can understand Gary’s disappointment. I, too, had high hopes for the game.

  • Michael Harlow

It baffles me how much this show can misrepresent the game in a completely different way than players are experiencing it.  The event is great and has provided the majority of players with great experiences.  There are problems, but BW released a successful patch.  It is not a failure.

Sure there are people who would like to wait for others to do the PvP objective…that makes sense.  If you can’t kill someone, you probably shouldn’t try.  That said, if you’re in a group of 4, you’re not waiting in line, you’re just going in and killing anyone that gets in your way.  And when there’s another group of 4, it’s great PvP.  There are other objectives and bosses in the 4v4 area that also provide for interesting skirmishes.  Keep in mind, killing people in PvP areas isn’t griefing, it’s fine.  There is no reason to do the PvP quests, you can cap rep without them.  The people standing in line are generally solo, and they’re making a choice to come into a 4v4 zone by themselves.  It’s Bioware’s intention that these people will have to wait/hide/be sneaky if they want to survive.

The comment about ‘why is PvE in the PvP planet’: the faction PvP is still alive and well in the north zone.  We’ve had giant 24+v24+ pub-v-imp battles over world bosses that are actually really balanced, and the game performs REALLY well, no slideshows.  And the best part, it’s all happening naturally.

Please don’t say things like Bioware gave up on Ilum if you haven’t bothered to even try it.  It’s all pretty minimal as far as new ideas, but they’re trying different things and seeing what happens.  Personally, with the performance improvements, the new PvP ideas, and the huge 2.0 patch, this game really feels like its hitting it’s stride.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=754168227 Len Hobbel

Well stated…except  giant pvp 24 vs 24 isnt giant…though but today’s standards it might be. Giant would be like 100s…1000s like we had in Lineage 2 in sieges or in Rohan…that was insane…but maybe today 24 vs 24 is huge these days. Possible I guess  but well said above

      • Michael Harlow

Right, I’m not talking about large scale, I’m talking purely SWTOR scale.  There hasn’t really be 24v24 since ilum was around the first time, so I’m just saying it’s refreshing to have it back, if only for a few nights when people were doing the world bosses

        • Steffen Jensen

How long will it stay alive as it have still not fixed the reason no one did it before.

The game still punishes you for fighting and there is nothing to gain and the fights are tiny. Right now i play GW2 and yesterday in the off hours on an American server we sieged a major keep for over an hour and had over 50 people in the zone working together to take it down.

This will not fix any thing and it is sad. Ilum could be fun, but if there solution to Ilum is more PvE then that will not work.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1260066056 Steven Diaz

Looks like they gave up on it, they didn’t change much, it’s still pretty useless in terms of what it’s supposed to be used for.  No misrepresentation, none of what they stated was actually wrong.  Facts are facts, regardless of how ugly they are.  Not all of the players experience things the same way, you’ve experienced it better than others, that doesn’t mean you’re any more special than anyone else.  It just means you had a different experience.  He feels it’s a shit change and I feel the same.  Don’t like it, don’t agree but don’t accuse someone of misrepresenting their own opinion.

      • rippled

“Fact” is it has been known for *months* that illum when it returned won’t be an open world pvp zone and that we’ll have to wait for BW to revisit that in the unspecified future.

Tho throw a hissy fit cos he expected it is either disingenuous and/or an indication that Gary should probably rage quit The Rrepublic for real and hand it (back) over to Mike who at least played the game and knew these basic “facts”.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1260066056 Steven Diaz

That doesn’t change the fact that Illum is nothing like they claimed it would be and they’ve failed time and time again to fix it and this new iteration is nowhere near an improvement.

      • Michael Harlow

If it’s not supposed to be used for 1v1 battles over individual orbs, 4v4 king of the hill, 24v24 world boss wars, what is Ilum ‘supposed to be used for’?  The misrepresentation is that a lot of players are enjoying playing this game and excited by the rapidity of changes coming, but from watching the show, one would think that everyone is about to up and quit.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1260066056 Steven Diaz

A lot does not mean that there aren’t players that aren’t.  Point still stands and many players ARE upset with these changes some have quit.  The main point is that they’re making questionable decisions.

  • David Alcon

If the hosts are reading these comments, please know that as someone who has been watching this show nearly since the beginning (even when not subbed to SWTOR)….last night really crossed a line and I’m not sure if I will continue to watch the show. I LOVE Gary rages and in the past they have all pointed out glaring issues that deserved to be addressed, but rage quitting a show leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

I took time to watch the show live on Monday, and when it was rescheduled I took time to stop what I was doing and watch it on Thursday. But to have a host ragequit…well it makes me wonder why I should bother to make time to be there live.

Now all that aside, I don’t even agree with all the rage. The Event is touted as an event. PvE players are already upset that they have to PvP at all in order to complete the dailies. PvP can and does still happen. I PvP’d for nearly an hour just last night after a couple of Imperials jumped me. We continued to play cat and mouse until one side vastly outnumbered the other. It was fun, and it was purely in the hands of the player.

Long story short, Gary flew off the handles without understanding the event and Larry/Justin did a relatively poor job of explaining the event to him. By the time they actually got to the point of explaining how it works, Gary was already in rage mode.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1260066056 Steven Diaz

Bad event is bad event, no explanation is going to twist that.  Rage was justified.

      • Liandirin

I think it is a good event. My guild mates and I have been having a lot of fun during this event.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alex-Mac/777995513 Alex Mac

Anyone I’ve played with has enjoyed it, save people who fret about the notion of heading into a PvP zone. But you don’t have to do *those* quest.

      • Michael Harlow

How is it bad?  It’s been bug free, performant, offered a great new rep system, some fun rewards, and has reintroduced some world pvp aspects back into the game.

      • David Alcon

Please explain how the event is bad.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Bergevin-Jr/1393526370 Jim Bergevin Jr

F2P can access the PTS but are subject to the same restrictions as on the live servers.

    not funny

    That was awesome!

OMG; really Gary? If you are going to be a Fucking tool, then leave to show and get someone that gives a shit!

    • WarHistorian

If he honestly didn’t care, do you think he’d get so angry about it?

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/SXJLDLQH26GHS73WJH66WVTPLI Dench

I am so happy I stopped playing this game last year.

I watch this show now just to see how poor of a direction the game continues to go in.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003099533977 Derrick Sturgill

    So…The Republic is over?

    • Pete Cuellar

No Gary just trolling jeez guys

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alex-Mac/777995513 Alex Mac

I wish he wasn’t. Not because of the game but just because listening to him talk about it…It just…no. I can’t.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1260066056 Steven Diaz

Why would you wish for him to end content that others enjoy?  You can just skip the show.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alex-Mac/777995513 Alex Mac

Mostly because I think they should strive to have this show be better than just the Tosh.0 of GamebreakerTV.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=23331060 Nathan Solinsky

I quit SWTOR after my 6 month founder subscription was up, but I still watch the show.  But seriously, Illum was a *selling* point of the game, and it was basically turned off, and now completely warped.  It’s really bad business, borderline fraudulent imo.

    • Michael Harlow

It’s been completely warped into something that actually is an enjoyable pvp experience.  This show is slanting what’s actually going on in game to be way more of a negative than the positive that it is in most places.

  • rippled

PvPers not really into pvping but trading objectives for painless gain shocker… never seen this in an mmo before lol.

I also loled at the rage about the the timer. the whole point of the timer is to get people to fight over the node. If you’re n9 in line your only option is to start whacking people. You know, pvp in the pvp area. If anything the timer should be shorter.

  • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

ROFL, I especially like the surprised ending AFTER Gary /ragequit the show.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shawn-Hargrave/100003202374593 Shawn Hargrave

you think they would have learned from thier last 2 events that ended up the same way but no its like they have the same event coded and just put different skins on it. Ilum is not a pvp zone anymore its just  daily zone like section x nothing more. You cant have large scale raids with this god aweful pos choice of an engine despite what larry thinks this hero is engine is a pos.

Im wondering whats going to happen to ilum after this event if the vendor is staying then what about the rest. If ilum stays as it is now then warzones is all thats left and even a year in you still cant choose the warzones you want to do seriously?

2.0 pts “makeb” class changes are shit after all that class feedback all the classes get are 1 new skill?  is this a joke?

I really hope these new mmo’s coming out take more and more players from tor this game is getting close to swg “nge” status. I dont get how these devs can be this clueless /shakes head

  • http://twitter.com/Merex760 Chris

Best troll. You people are hilarious.

  • http://www.facebook.com/stradus.woods Stradus Woods

So fun to watch them screw up.  They have been making mistakes since beta.  Swtor has be come a drama show for me.  Wonder what will take its place when swtor finally dies or gets smart.   I am kinda hoping FFXIV will.  Only game I think that could fail harder right now.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alex-Mac/777995513 Alex Mac

And yet, I haven’t played GW2 with any regularity or excitement since the Mad King event.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/W76UOX2IDTRMMYTPASSJDLXLRM Bob

SWTOR is the greatest example as to why a company that hasn’t done MMO’s before should start out small before going big budget. So many easy to fix mistakes that could have been caught if they had any ounce of experience. I suspect Zenimax and ESO will follow the same fate.

    • http://twitter.com/tordr86 Tor-Sigurd

The amount of time and money they had, and how bad the game was and is being handled, is going to remain a mystery for me.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1469343717 Hunter Ryan Highsmith

GARY GANNON MAN OF THE YEAR. man this game is just terrible, and to think I followed it for years before it came out..

  • http://twitter.com/NerdnGeekInc Raven Frosth

Funny Gary, You hosting The Republic but you’re not even playing the game, and Judging how screwed up it is.  Well you don’t need to do Ilum if you don’t want to.  Playing first hand is fun taking a opinion from Justin or Larry it’s not the same experience.  Funny not really more like sad, then funny :( .  Anyways  I’ve might not followed the game for 3-5 Years but I still Enjoy the Game the way it is.  Sure it does need work and stuff but come on!!! Such a Giant fans of Bioware Community and you guys crumble because they’re screwing up on the content. Hmm what game or AAA + MMO isn’t and Nobody is Rage Quiting their Show.

    • David Alcon

SWTOR is “F2P” so there really is no excuse why Gary can’t hop on for a few hours a week to get a handle on where the game is at so he at least can have a little bit of validity to his statements.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/David-Grimm/1290540679 David Grimm

There’s design missteps  and then there’s the completely backwards design of Swtor.   No other game is release content This badly designed, this slow. Even wow is releasing content faster. Rediculous!

    • http://twitter.com/tordr86 Tor-Sigurd

Helloooo dude, they have screwd up ilum twice – stop being such a big fanboy.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shawn-Hargrave/100003202374593 Shawn Hargrave

this is the 2nd time they blew it with ilum. The first time you gabe ametegelo on a live stage at pax in front of thousands of people saying ilum will be 100vs100 then you had incompetent development in the bases allowing base turrets to be destroyed and landing zones to be camped by the opposite side so a lot of people got top of the line gear sets back then (what would be war hero now) in a matter of hours. Gabe should have lost his job over that oversight they lost a HUGE amount of pvp’rs from that then ilum was pretty much turned into what it really was a huge hole in the ground thats a pos.

Ive been in the game from beta to 6 months in and unsubbed. When you have damion schubert saying legacy is some of thier best stuff and it costs to much to make new races and other stupid ridiculous crap to their customers its a wonder they have any players at all really.

To say the game needs work is an understatement. There is no more “bioware” thats just a name plate that EA uses to make people feel better about playing tor.

Larry still plays the game is he wrong to?

      • http://twitter.com/tordr86 Tor-Sigurd

lol indeed, bioware is just a shell, sold out to ea.

  • http://twitter.com/McGamor Michael

Great show and I hope Gary focuses now on better MMOs than SWTOR. Because as long as EA runs BW, it will always be broken.

  • Pete Cuellar

Lets get a Wildstar show come on gary!

  • http://www.facebook.com/combustible.lemon.9 Oblivious Prime

Wildstar show! with Scott Hawks or Gazimoff form ZAM as well and Elixabeth claire or Elliot Lefevre from massively :D

  • http://twitter.com/DanielReasor Daniel Reasor

Am I the only one encouraged by the fact that gamers were too civilized for a game developer’s attempt to turn a PvE objective into a world PvP griefing fest? The new Ilum’s example of cooperation as an emergent property of online communities seems to me like the kind of thing that gaming bloggers, anthropologists, and psychologists should be making a case study out of.

    • Feroquiera

You want to celebrate the fact that a developed idea failed so utterly in its purpose, to provide entertaining content for players in the area, that those players felt in number, that there was more fun to be had from not remaining at the keyboard while taking part in it?!?
According to what was said in the show, they (the planners working on this area), left a whole load of literal no-man’s-land to the South of their botched PVE attempt. Terrible.

  • Feroquiera

Well, that does indeed sound crappy. To think that a team of designers OF BIOWARE, and another overseeing the general direction came up with such a completely FUBAR situation as it sounds that Ilum is faced with…

Why didn’t they instead have a capture and hold situation for the deposit area to where you have to hold the location for 45+ seconds, and then you get the point?
So then, you have PVE objective in PVP zone. You can still have fools blowing each other up. There is also afterwards a reason for fighting…and, Justin can still use a sleep dart to sneak-rush the point for lols. :)

  • mcfoyle

even as screwed as ilum is (and always has been), you arent going to ever force a player base into world pvp if they arent interested. people on pve servers are generally not interested. even people on pvp servers often cry about ‘ganking’.

especially so if whatever rewards available are easier to obtain by not pvping. they should have just given up on trying to make ilum a pvp area.

aside from that, the event has been fun and pretty popular, overall. which is a shame since all anyone will talk about is how much a fail the shoe-horned in pvp is.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Bergevin-Jr/1393526370 Jim Bergevin Jr

Well said. Here we have the perfect example of why Gamers are A-holes (according to Gary). There is nothing but constant B-ing and M-ing for OPvP, but when areas in a game are created for non-arena PvP, all that happens is B-ing and M-ing about getting ganked. Ultimately it is the players’ fault for things like this because all players ever want is to have control over the game in such a way to make it immersive and player-oriented, yet, give them a space where they can PvP at will (even Outlaw’s Den on Tatooine), and what happens – nothing unless there is incentive to go somewhere to do something and maybe a PvP match will break out. This just points out the fact that players don’t want true oPvP. If you really want oPvP, then you shouldn’t need any incentive to go out to the PvP areas and gank away.

  • mcfoyle

oh and im sure half of Gary’s rage quit was because he had a second show to do that night, and wanted some more time between.  the ‘tantrum’ was a somewhat funny way to be able to just walk away when he felt like it…i wouldnt be surprised if larry and justin knew about it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrew.sekersky Andrew Sekersky

SWtOR/Bioware never ceases to amaze me. Wonder how long ’till they finally throw in the towel.

  • Oldschoolremag

So lets see the ways Bioware have left to get me back and prove their game is no longer a slow motion trainwreck.

Massive compensation for my CE’s purchase and sub time when it goes free to play, check! Oh wait, you want me to buy sub time to get it? Go F your Grandma.

Fix Ilum and give me that awesome open world pvp experience that would be amazing for Star Wars- What, you designed a queue? All that time and I get a line? Why would you even design a pvp objective that could be completed peacefully? Go defile your Grandma again.

The SSSP. Yeah, not much hope left at this point. I mean, you completely borked the ground game with hyper linear, single player gameplay, craptastic raiding, mediocre pvp that never felt as responsive as WoW, uninspired crafting, an action house that should actually cause you shame and you couldn’t even manage to give us pazaak or swoop racing.

You know, they really should have gone for a full blown 3d space game at launch. At least then they could blame the ground game problems on something and people like me would have something worth subbing for while they fixed it.

    • Valdemar Rudhag

You don’t need to sub to get ur cartel points. If that is what you meant.

      • Seventy One

Back in December i had to sub back to get the “complimentary” Cartel Coins. And as far as i know this still stands. Has something new happened?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shawn-Hargrave/100003202374593 Shawn Hargrave

lol the sssp is 2 people doing space missions on rails theres no way in hell thier competent enough to do swg type space. Even if they could pull it off they way thier charging for things it would be 90$ pre order now and get this hologram of a new ship or some stupid shit.

You know what always bothered me about tor is where is this war at were in? They keep making hut cartel raids b/c if we had faction operations theyd have to make 2 different raids instead of the same 1 raid and cloning it for the opposite side. I hope eso and other games take more and more people b/c to screw up ilum up 2 times and be this incompetent over and over is killing this game

  • GrindedStone

FYI running a quest in a game runs an amount of compiled code.  A mid sized typical quest is about 2 full pages of computer code.  In many cases this code is run one time for each frame, or in other words 120 pages of code a second for a single quest.

If SWTOR can track 25 quests it’s obviously a highly optimized system.  Development is actually quite messy, an twice as much with the large amount of workers on TOR.  It’s not exactly the best example of a fun workplace enviroment either.

From what I saw, in most cases the Hero Engine SDK looked like it was more difficult to use.  When you are working with something like that in a project it basicly gets under your skin an eats away at you.  So I would figure this game is very messy indeed.
