Sweet! Hope we’ll see a lot of gameplay. I hate that they took trandoshans out of the game. Bossk is my favourite SW character, and I’d love to play a trandoshan bounty hunter or agent.

Funniest ending ever. Can’t wait for more.

Still holding out hope for the old intro music!!!

I think they use this for every show now. I could be wrong. But I check MOG, Dashboard, TWIMMO, and Blizzblues even and they all seemed to be using it. Might be a contract thing?

The only one that’s isn’t using it is Legendary >:O

Seriously Gary.. it’s time to drop the Mac and pick up a real man’s machine (PC) :P

Great show guys, can’t wait for more info!

So Justin couldn’t say more cause Darthhater’s embargo isn’t until Monday? Seems he’s been in beta longer than Larry. Great special show BTW! Having a brain overload from all the TOR info today, can’t wait to hear more from you guys!

Blizzard hacked you to stop ya talking about swtor!

Nice special episode, thank for the infos.. some make me lil bit sad, but I’d judge the game by playing it. No MMOs are perfect at launch, and hopefully with time we’ll see some nice changes asked by the community.

I certainly dont mean for this to sound condescending or mean, but you guys seem like noobs. Well Larry at least. I mean he struggles with things that are so basic and easy to do. Your companions come equipped with multiple abilities – to tank, dps, or even heal. It’s easy to configure them to perform one function or the other. And once done they perform brilliantly.

I have been so agitated with the majority of the press today. Many of them don’t seem to have really played the game very much. Gamespy actually called this is Wow Clone in space – which couldnt be further from the truth.

The game is as innovative as any product I’ve ever seen. It puts the RPG back in MMORPG. I think the WoW and especially Rift fanboys will struggle because the game is so RP heavy where those games have almost no RP. Maybe, but WoW in space it’s not.I like Justin. He seems to be more of a hardcore player that has spent significant time with the game and understands its mechanics. I also prefer melee in SWTOR – nothing could be more elegant.

My frustration is I expect these online journalists to be EXPERTS at their craft, to be articulate and well spoken with well thought out and informed opinions. More Justin, less Larry.

    • Luke Gerrard

Just because someones opinion/experience doesn’t line with your own doesn’t mean they are noobs. The game takes a LOT of elements from world of warcraft even the devs themselves said so, so I don’t know why you are getting so defensive over it being called a wow clone in space because mechanically dialog aside, it really is.

I dislike that you call other people fanboys when you are clearly fanboying here while putting down one of the best hosts gbtv has to offer, just because you don’t agree with him doesn’t make him any less credible. Every host brings something unique to the table and a show would be boring with everyone bringing the same opinion to the table. Unfortunately with how many press outlets are calling it a wow clone, I do expect more angry swtor people who think this game offers something differant mechanically (now the game does innovate quite heavilly in the story department, but the combat is still wow and it was done for a reason. Swtor as a whole is WoW with dialog and a few extra mechanics, that’s how they aimed for the game to be.

So please don’t be disrespectful to the hosts.

      • http://twitter.com/TheSolidarity The Solidarity

My intent was never to be disrespectful and I apologize if I came across that way.

        And WoW is EQ

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=671061210 Paulo Claro

I have watched every single of the shows,, and I do enjoy them for the entertainment side of it. However, it is true that when it comes to their actual gameplay they come across as “noobish”. I am in the beta and alot of the things they describe are not accurate and any mmo gamer with reasonable experience at a lets call it “expert” level will have a different perception.

To the topic at end, companions are not all like you are controlling 2 chars, that would simply not work. What you do is you choose a role for them as described, choose what activities you want them to use automaticly and thats it. You never worry about them again because their AI is actually really well scripted. I play a sorc with a tank companion and he works like a charm, holds aggro on mobs, does not pull extra mobs/packs, buffs and uses abilities in a logical order its perfect.

As for the pace of action its the same as, yes i am going there, wow for example independent if you are melee or range. You have some actions that are chained and will take longer to play out, chain casting or melee combos (think a warrior doing whirlwind on wow) and others that are quick action.

Dont take what they say about gameplay as relevant if you are an expert/hardcore mmo player. You will have a different perception of the game trust me. Lary mentioned he uses keys 1-5 on my sorc i have at least 10 keybinds that i use actively and then i have other abilities that are situational.

      • ClexMix

You obviously have never played any Hero battles in Guildwars. It requires you to play 2 + characters. Heroes in guildwars are npc’s which the player has full control over, whether it be gear or skills equipped on their bars. Each player can toggle the skills on or off as well as the npc’s party roles, or the player can simply turn off all the abilities and control the hero completely, each skill and even to where the Hero stands. The system obviously has it’s flaws which I’m sure TOR will have its.

WoW has no “chains” whatsoever on its combat. GCD rules that game entirely. They’ve even changed the game to where static damage (white damage, or auto attack) isn’t reset by using skills. You can be a dagger toting Warlock and enable your auto attack with the weapon and still hit a boss in its toes while casting shadow bolt. Whirlwind will skip it’s full animation 60% of the time as well as Mortal Strike or Slam because the game’s combat system doesn’t allow time for any sort of true animation reel. You throw haste and movement into the mix and the game’s combat doesn’t feel as visually rewarding other than the big yellow numbers dictating a crit.

I really don’t see how you can call yourself an expert…..

      • http://www.scarlacs.com/ Scarla

I think folks are getting a bit overzealous with picking apart the commentary.

No one uses 10 keybinds as part of a regular rotation. Generally you’ve got your main rotation (~5 keys, as Larry says) and then cooldowns/situational stuff. You’re saying the same thing, you’re just saying it in a different way.

As for the companion stuff, I’m not sure what you guys are referring to. Gary specifically asked him what would happen if you tried to manually control your companions, which is where Larry and Justin BOTH agreed that companions can be difficult to control. So I’m not sure where you’re getting the idea that Larry is a noob who can’t control his companions using the default AI.

Drop the “noob RPer” label and listen to what’s being said. Larry and Justin are both knowledgeable and both have valid opinions to give. The fact that they come from opposite ends of the diverse MMO community is only a postive thing for the show.

    • Shaddoe

To be clear, I leveled 3 characters past level 15 and created multiple other test characters in less than 2 weeks. I logged about 30+ hours on top of working a regular job. I struggled with nothing, but there were elements of the UI that I did just didn’t like. I absolutely knew how to turn off my companions abilities, but that wasn’t the point; he shouldn’t have had that ability in the first place. Georg Zoeller (the lead combat designer for TOR) agreed after I brought it up in my column that the grapple pull should be removed, and it was. My point was not that I couldn’t turn it off.. my point was that shouldn’t be there.

      • http://twitter.com/chumppi Riku Marttinen

Right, tbh – the UI is just a mess, it’s not at the 2011 level like it should be. All UI’s should have the possibility to scale, resize, opacity, move every single piece of UI. Coding that shouldn’t be a really big thing if the UI is done correctly from the start. It’s harder if it’s hard-coded in the game.

    • ClexMix

First off, this is an internet tv show run by donations and add slots. The “experts” you want would be the game designers, especially on a game that’s only in beta and constantly changing still. They aren’t journalist grads.

Secondly, you talk as if you are the forerunner on all things swtor, and base your conclusion that Gary and the bunch are “noobs”, a word commonly used by people with a self inflated sense of skill and or knowledge if a game in its entirety, when you have no to stake to claim your own level of expertise when it comes to the game.

My frustration is the current online community in any game, whether it be WoW or console fps’s. The majority of people that you run into are elitists because they play games which require little to no skill to further in skewed ranking systems. They have little sense of maturity and most of the time a lack of comprehension on the game as a whole. For instance I’ve played WoW since launch, I’ve seen top 25 progression in BC and completed each level of content from 10man Stratholme till I quit after first tier content in Cata. After a hiatus from launch of Cata to Firelands I was able to level and gear 5 characters each with roughly a 357 ilvl and still rank in the top 60′s on World of Logs, yet there was still plenty about the game I didn’t know like the back of my hand and let alone call people out on more or less their personal preference and short lived experience with the game.

I don’t really see anything in this episode which really labels either of them as noobs other than the fact that they’ve played a BETA for a short time. To get technical no one is an expert at this game other than people like Gabe Amatangelo.

As for media outlets calling the game a WoW space clone, whichever editor or writer wrote the review probably doesn’t have much experience in the MMO genre and just saw the many similarities between the games and wrote what they felt it was. To say the game is nothing like WoW is saying chickens are not like birds. WoW ,being considered a genre standard, has had nearly 8 years to shape it into what it is today. They themselves, have taken ideas and mechanics from other games from day 1 to now, which is what BioWare is doing themselves, yes they are adding more story and cinematic gameplay to their game and that’s their spinoff if you will, but it’s clearly different as a whole yes. I think WoW is a terrible game now catering to too many player types and focusing more on subs than the quality of the game. Rewarding speed of leveling and copying a cookie cutter build than learning the game and forcing the player to do so. They made it easily accessible to new comers to the point where the population is 70% of people with little knowledge of game mechanics with pompous attitudes because they hit 3 buttons and have sub par performances but its accepted as the norm. Like with SOE ruining SWG, money hungry Activision CEO has ruined WoW, StarCraft and already ruined Diablo. (not to mention the CoD franchise)

      Your logic is flawed, sir….

Larry covers lots of games and justin only covers TOR. Not every journalist gets to play 40 hours a week of every game. Larry has not got a lot of time with TOR compared to justin.

You will not get into trouble with Bioware unless you release specific game content that they have not already approved or has already been released.
I wouldn’t want to play with Larry if I were you baddies only hold you back from actually enjoying the game.

      • Zorkai

Larry I’m sorry but I do agree you seem more of a RP player and common knowledge stats that RP players are not the greatest of players.
Also I’m currently in beta been in since July and if you have not been able to level 3 characters past lvl15 playing 30+ hours then I’m sorry your doing it wrong. Even if you don’t skip the dialogue if shouldn’t be taking you that long.
Extremely glad I will not be playing with you or on your server. Actually I might play on your server so I can just camp you until you rage quit and unsub. But knowing a RP player like you will you sit on Coruscant where the opposite faction can not go to. So I guess i will just have to get lucky and dominate you in warzones.

          Zorkai,

I would recommend a good spell check (and grammar check) before you click POST next time.  Also, not posting the same ‘flaming’ comment two separate times.  I agree with you that Larry could have been more concise with his explanations on game play and mechanics, however, stating such opinions in a derogatory fashion only serves to show an inability to get your point across without resorting to name calling (n00b) and threats, albeit hollow, to purposely frustrate a fellow gamer.  My bad if I came off sounding like l’m trolling, but I just felt to pass that on to ya.  =8-Þ

        • ClexMix

I think Bioware developers and producers have stated there is story in this game. There’s companion customization. There is dialogue. There are plenty of quests. I think you might need to go back to your heirloom gear and 1,2 and 3 buttons and stick with WoW.

I’d be willing to show you up in my outdated gear if you pay for my sub/xfer to your server. Hell I’ll even roll a new character and replace your role in your guild.

Or are you all talk and no game?

The fact that you made no counter argument only proves my point even more. You clearly have no grasp on  anything that is in SWTOR, even the simplest game mechanics you are a bit over your head. I mean seriously Larry the companion system is by far one of the most simplest systems I’ve ever seen in any video game that has a companion, and its so straight forward and easy to get used to even for the fresh new gamer. Honestly like myself and many other people that post on this site say Gary honestly should replace you with someone who actually knows what they are talking about probably with someone else who is from darthhater, go back to writing yoru fail blog’s that no one reads, well no one that actually matters.

Who are you to talk about anyone in such a manner. If you want to get just a Darth Hater op stay on the DH sight. The point of this show is to get more than one type of op. Larry is respected by many people across the communities. A troll like you would not know about being respected as you have not earned any type of respect. Grow up, and if you want a fight I will kick you a$$ any time in game.

I’d be willing to show you up in my outdated gear if you pay for my sub/xfer to your server. Hell I’ll even roll a new character and replace your role in your guild.

Or are you all talk and no game?

    • Anonymous

      Your logic is flawed, sir….

      • Zorkai

Sounds like someone is mad they have not gotten into the beta and will not be receiving an invite.

        • ClexMix

What part of that had to do with anyone other than Larry, Justin and the OP being in beta?

          Is English difficult for you?

          • Zorkai

“My frustration” I stopped reading right there then rest of your “QQ essay” was basically saying how you don’t like “elitest” and and how they have a undeserved sense of higher status well honestly they are playing better then you hints why they have higher rating then you, more gear then you and are further into progression then you. The people who get mad over that are people who are either to terrible to play the game properly and have no reason to be in those higher brackets because they obviously don’t have the skill to be there. So honestly all your comments are stating for everyone to see is this.

“I’M A CAREBEAR, YOU GUYS ARE “ELITEST” JERKS QQ…QQ…QQ…QQ…QQ”

Please come up with a more constructive argument please.

          • ClexMix

Actually what it entailed was people who act like elitists yet they are mouth breathing morons, such as yourself, who actually are barely sub-par players.

~2000 rated bg team in only 4 pieces of 359 rest 352 ilvl pvp gear and top 60 dps on WoL with only a 356 ilvl during BWD content/season 9 on warlock. Not to mention the 4-5 other 85′s with similar gear. No, I didn’t really worry about people being “better” when beating a full 363 vicious rogue, hunter, mage in duels.

But as I said… it’s only the sub-par players that feel they need to try and put down others to make themselves feel more accomplished in a game. Quite pathetic.

If you had read OP I was playing off his rant with the “my frustration” deal pretty much calling him out…..
“My frustration is I expect these online journalists to be EXPERTS”

If you need I’d be glad to tutor you on your reading comprehension if you’d be up for it.

            Thanks for playing though.

Also, if I were you, which I can tell you I’m completely thrilled I’m not, I would put forth a little bit more effort on constructing complete well structured sentences with proper grammar when trying to bash someone.

I would also learn when to properly use quotations. When your put things like QQ essay and elitist into quotations it usually means it has a different meaning to the phrase and or word considering you weren’t quoting anyone.

And as far as constructive arguments go I would have to go with Larry, who you think is an imbecile, you really need to learn to read and stop stroking your almost non-existent e-peen. Your beta quip was completely moot (if you aren’t sure what that word means I pity you) and essentially proves you’re a moronic hypocrite who struggles with the one of the most common languages in the world.

Instead of skipping 3rd period English class to go home, play WoW and “pwn teh baddies”, you should stay in school so when you’re 40 you aren’t touching other people’s food at McDonald’s or other similar food chains.

Larry covers lots of games and justin only covers TOR. Not every journalist gets to play 40 hours a week of every game. Larry has not got a lot of time with TOR compared to justin.

“Gamespy actually called this is Wow Clone in space – which couldnt be further from the truth.”
    quote from The Solidarity

It depends if if you are a lumper or splitter. You can break down the innovative portions such as the social points, group convos, and Dark/Light dialogue choices and say it is very different from WoW, and in those respects that is correct, but in an overall game play style it does play like WoW, which shouldn’t be surprising as that is the MMO in MMORPG.

I suppose the best description that I can give it is WoW in space with a strong RPG emphasis, but keep in mind although entertaining and well voice acted, most of the decision choices are just window dressing that lead to the same outcome in terms of mission objectives; every once in a while you earn Dark/Light points which allows access to gear, and also favor points for your companion.

Attack of the WoW Clones is fairly accurate; revolutionary, nope, perhaps evolutionary for the MMORPG genre, and more importantly fun…

I’d just like to add my 2 cents on the cover, since Larry struggled slightly to explain it.

Whenever you target a mob, the game will automatically highlight the nearest cover spot. At the nearest available coverspot, you’ll see a green guy. Other qualifying coverspots will display as a green arrow and you’ll need to move closer or reposition if you want to cover at that specific spot. When you press the “take cover” button (Default is F or Mouse Button 3), you will either roll to your selected cover (green guy) OR if no qualifying hard cover is available you’ll automatically take portable cover.

As of the current build (October), you can take portable cover from level 1…however you wont have the holographic wall or recieve any defensive bonuses untill you’re able to train them later on in the game, Cover works the same regardless of AC, however Gunslinger gets talents later on that rely on cover.

I feel like Justin and Larry’s different responses are because of their different backgrounds in gaming, not saying they both haven’t tried a lot of games but it seems obvious to me that they focused more on particular games. Larry is a CoH/SWG player and those play very different from Justin’s WoW raiding background. SWTOR plays a lot more like WoW than any other game. WoW has made more money than any MMO in history and in doing so has set an industry standard that all games, that wish to be successful, have to follow. Ive found that the combat speed is different from games Ive played in the past but not bad. Just different. The combat is faster and more in depth than WoW but not as fast as when I played CoV, at least during their launch and the first year after. This isn’t necessarily because of cooldowns and such but is a balance between CDs, your companions influence, and your rotation/damage output.

Larry’s idea about toggling only certain abilities in order to customize your companion characters to your own play style is spot on with what I believe Bioware intended for the companions. For those that enjoy more control with your companions, there are ways to customize their abilities beyond how they originally come to you.

BTW I leveled an Inq within 10 levels of max during one of the beta builds and have gotten quite a bit of experience with the game.

I think they use this for every show now. I could be wrong. But I check MOG, Dashboard, TWIMMO, and Blizzblues even and they all seemed to be using it. Might be a contract thing?

The only one that’s isn’t using it is Legendary >:O
