Trash Talkin' TOR - Star Wars The Old Republic - Jedi Consular vs Imperial Agent

GAMBREAKER presents to you the best Star Wars: The Old Republic show on the internet. We call it simply The Republic. On today’s show we talk about maps and walls. I bet you didn’t know that SWTOR had maps and walls! Kidding! We actually have something called patch notes to talk about this week. It is almost like TOR is becoming a real MMO, where we have things like patch notes, future changes, and class balancing to talk about. Surprise! TOR is not vaporware! Leading us down this winding-and-twisted road, Gary “Griefer” Gannon heads up our usual panel of SWTOR experts including Larry “Shaddoe” Everett from Massively, Justin “J.Lowe” Lowe from Darth Hater, and Ed “Taugrim” Park from Taugrim.com.

Besides the all-important closing of beta testing, the top story proclaims that Activision‘s CEO Bobby Kotick does not see the financial viability of BioWare‘s MMO because of the cut LucasArts retains for licensing. Our panel tends to believe that Kotick is blowing smoke. Everett asks when the last time Activision had anything to do with a Star Wars game, and Park wonders how Kotick has intimate knowledge of another company’s business deals.

However, you aren’t looking for the all-business commentary. You want our panel’s comments on the latest game changes, their final beta thoughts, and who would win in a fight against a Consular and Imperial Agent, right? (The Consular was featured in last week’s episode, so the Agent should win just to be fair.) You can find out all of that and more on this week’s edition of The Republic!

Great as always dudes, I’d rate my beta experience 4/4 as well, despite numerous bus and some fps issues. The game as it stands is kickass, This is a total newbie in the genre speaking.

My favorite bug is definetly invisible Bastila in the Council Chambers when playing Jedi Knight. Classic. The orange pixel also. May it rest in peace.

More than likely she wasn’t invisible but like 3 inches tall. I thought the same thing when I saw the bug, but then the camera switched to show her super tiny standing in her chair. Oh and it isn’t Bastila, it’s Shateel Shan (Spelling??) Bastila’s Great Great Great Grand-daughter.

If they have expansions probably there’ll be C.E.s too. You guys think that there’ll be another merchant and the one from the standard edition will be useless? Or maybe you could gain access to the merchant with the expansion and he will be updated for classic buyers and the new ones…

I watched Ed’s vid on his blog on Rift keybindings (you mentioned it the post show footage on the stream) – it’s realy interesting.

Perhaps Ed could elaborate on that in SWTOR mechanics, perhaps on his blog or something. I know you said he’ll talk about it in tonights Sanctum (I’ll definetly watch that), but it’s still Rift and in beta for me it was far different in class mechanics from my previous MMOs. Some elements  are just not to clear for me. Like “a” – closing gap… heck I’m not sure what that should mean in here :D yes, I’m not much of a pvp guy and I modified my keybindings in WoW and SWTOR beta just a bit when compared to Ed’s layout :)

Btw. Ed – does it work well on PvE aswell? And did you (if at all) find it difficult to transfer this method to a healer (as the layout seems to be dps focused).

Anyways – cheers for a great show :)

For The Sanctum 43 (next week’s RIFT episode), I’ll create 2 different keybinding examples, one for DPS and one for healer.

And yes, I used to play a lot of PVE, I had to cut that out due to RL time constraints. But I plan to PVE in SWTOR given that I’m trying to transition to gaming coverage being my full-time gig.

      • Nelfein

        heh, I
always thought about doing this, but it’s kinda impossible here in Poland ;-)
but thanks for the replay and gl with your plan :) +1 for that Ed :)

I don’t want a Mass Effect MMO as well.
If Bioware ever make another MMO, i honestly prefer something other than Sci-Fi.

    • TheDude4bides

It would be a bad business decision to do a Mass Effect MMO at this point, as the property is similar enough to KOTOR and would cannibalize TOR’s subscribers.

    • Soupmaster101

They do have experience with Dragon Age 1. Not 2 since 1 acts more like a MMO gameplay wise.

I’m happy about the leveling speed change just speaking as a SI, though not for the same reason as Larry. I got to 10 just fine (though that may have been to my obsessive search for holocrons), BUT I was having a terrible time in Naga Sadow’s tomb, right before you get Khem Val. Those droid and acolyte packs were just brutal, every fight I was at sub 20% hp; light armor plus 5 packs were a real challenge that my smuggler and BH did not have at that level.

The thing about the mail lag in WoW is that they’ve effectively removed it now, so I think it’s kind of pointless if not a big deal.

Lol, love how he keeps calling Pachter Patcher. And while Pachter knows his shit, he’s also known for just saying whatever he wants. Pretty much anything he says to media (remember he’s an investment advisor) is either just to make a headline or to screw with people.

It’s always funny to me how people try to de-hype games like this, instead of trying to provide real insight as to why they believe an upcoming game isn’t any good.

I was *highly* skeptical of SWTOR before trying it, especially when comparing simple things (e.g. the spec system) against RIFT and the fact that BW had not launched an MMORPG.

I’ve been trying to find a game to stick with for 1+ years without having any doubt about the game’s direction. RIFT was looking great until Patch 1.5 (and 1.6) went live. If not for 1.5, I’d still be content in RIFT-land. My original plan was to skip SWTOR and try GW2, especially as I’m more of a classic fantasy setting fan. So in a way I can thank Trion for getting me to pull my attention out of the weeds and look at SWTOR.

Btw, I’m planning on trying GW2 when it launches, and I say this preemptively because I already know how some people will react when I play / blog about GW2. Decision’s already been made for me. I’m trying both, no reason not to, esp as GW2 has no monthly sub.

Some day gamers will get over their myopic view of advocating one game while dinging every new. This is what some people don’t grasp. Having *multiple* attractive gaming options is *great* for gamers. As I wrote on my blog yesterday, 2011 is the first year in a long time where the MMORPG made huge strides:
      http://taugrim.com/2011/12/06/2011-bounceback-year-for-the-mmorpg-industry/

So IMO we should be glad that companies such as Trion and BioWare had and will likely have a successful launch in 2011.

Mo’ successful launches => more money invested for new games => more options for gamers

Great reply man. I am looking forward to both games and will probably play both as well. I too am sick and tired of the people that say SWTOR will fail. Heck I saw a post on the General forums of SWTOR from some guy claiming that 99% of the beta testers never made it to level 25 because the game sucked. I would love to know where he is getting his or her information from. I look forward to your videos and I am already spreading their awesomeness to my friend who will  be playing SWTOR.

I’m tired of people saying XYZ game will fail, when their motivation behind saying so is because of an existing game they play.

But anyway, I’m all for there being more good games to choose from. Devs win = gamers win
