TWIMMO 127: Goodbye 2012, Hello 2013

The TWIMMO crew breaks down the last year in gaming, while looking forward to the next. Join Gary Gannon, Mike B, Hilary Nicole, and Jason Winter as they prognosticate and pontificate — and maybe hallucinate.

What do they think of the slate of games scheduled for next year? When do they think we’ll see The Elder Scrolls Online, Neverwinter, EverQuest Next, WildStar, and other hotly anticipated titles? Will some other game steal the spotlight?

And will this be the year we finally get solid details on Blizzard’s Titan? Or will we see the announcement of a new big game — maybe one that harkens back to the roots of MMO gaming and brings back a more “hardcore” style?

Catch you next year!

Great show. Watching the live steam as Gary stresses out over the back to back shows and descends into madness.

  • http://www.facebook.com/davidallmighty David Cohen

SWTOR still does not have a /roll

  • ScottHawkes

Gary was a bit confused in what I said, I did play Bless and it has a lot of potential and looks phenomenal but there isn’t enough content ready yet to really get excited about the systems (though they do sound good from the plans they have).
The aspects Gary spoke of were more closely attributable for what I saw when I played The Elder Scrolls Online.

I think it’s a flawed argument to say GW2 would fail if it was sub based. I think you’re looking at a completely different team structure with a sub based MMO game rather than a B2P MMO.

ArenaNet already stated they were overwhelmed by how many people picked the game up and clearly their team wasn’t able to deal with the influx of players.

Personally I think that had they gone with the ambition of this is the next WoW (10m players etc) then they’d have the tech and team behind it to make it happen. Horses for courses.

Funny to hear the Blizz fanboys in MIke B and Pokket diss everything that wasn’t BLizz.  But also very sad … for them.

    • iamthemikeb

Fanboys, eh? If you weren’t so out of touch you’d see that besides releasing MoP, Blizzard did nothing this year hence the lack of things to critique.

      • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

D3, but that’s not an MMO.

      • http://twitter.com/DaveyDiablo Davey Diablo

Releasing MoP *is* pretty significant though?

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Lol, I would never call MikeB a Blizzard fanboy. You must have missed his and his buddy Darnell’s ongoing critique of the WoW character models and his prediction that MoP would be free.

While Pokket says she doesn’t hate WoW, it would be hard to convince me about that.  You can hear it in her tone and reactions to anything dealing with WoW.

    • balen arenas

Well Mike already responded but I hardly call him a blizz fanboy. I’d even venture to say that Mike is the most neutral of all the gamebreaker hosts in regards to mmos.

imo gw2 wasnt overhyped at all lol…. better than i expcted :) also if gw2 was going to be sub based??? they would have obviously changed the game play to suit a sub model…. gw2 was made with B2P in mind…swtor was good :) i liked it cos i prefer the whole story mode lvling to normal traditional mmo lvling….. im not a raider so for me swtor was fine xD. i sued to be the biggest blizz fan boy??? but after wow, and sc2 being released as 3 games i lost faith in blizz cos of the fact that blizz became all about the money… now im not too excited about titan cos its gonna be another money sink without a doubt.

    gw2 == better than i expected
firefall == better than i exected so far
    diablo 3 == pretty dissapointing
dota 2  == as good as i expected
teso ==  i have high hopes for it :D fingers crossed cos they actually might be able to pull it off ^^
nwo (never winter online) == looks promising :)
wildstar == looks promising so far :)
sc2  == story was pretty awesome as allways :) but i hate the fact they are releasing it as 3 diff games.

u could play teso as a sneaky assasin :) u and a bunch of ur friends can co-ordinate acording to their diff roles ^^, if gone that way

Final Fantasy XIV Realm reborn is going to smoke them all away. You’ll see!

      • InvaderMig

I was gonna make a what are you smoking joke, but I have a feeling that was sarcasm, so I won’t. ;)

  • http://twitter.com/caerulei Timothy Noël

Just wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for using Youtube as your hosting service.  Makes life so much simpler.

  • http://www.facebook.com/elias.rowan Elias Rowan

This is in response to the part of the show where you all are discussing the difficulty level of MMOs. What Gary said, that you know you only need X level and exactly XYZ gear in order to just mow through the content, is EXACTLY my problem with the majority of MMO’s currently available. Gimme the challenges. Give me THAT part of the old school MMO, where you have to bang your head on a wall that might last more than an hour in order to figure out exactly what everyone needs to do together in order to get through it. PLEASE.

    • InvaderMig

That problem with that approach is that you are in the minority.  Most people play games to just sit back relax and not have to think much about what they are doing.  The fact is most people aren’t looking for a challenge when it comes to games, they are simply looking for entertainment.  Your way is not good for business.

BTW, I’m certainly not saying your wrong, but in the end it’s all business.

  • Krzysztof Kotarba

I would play dayz but I hate such buggy games.

  • Arthur Banks

About EQ Next…Smedley said it will be playable at the next SOE live.   Which is September and I need to get there.

  • Arch Age

19:30 – 21:00 Were they making fun of the idea of hundreds of players fighting in a war scenario on a large open PvP battlefield? Factions and guilds clashing using a combat system similar to Dark Souls, Chivalry or Mount & Blade. Yes that sounds silly, what kind of MMO player or Gamer in general would ever think something like that would be great. Silly silly ideas that we should all laugh at. Hahaha Hehehe Bwahaho

  • http://twitter.com/Aoewin Maxime Beaulieu

Totally agree with Pokket : if GW2 was sub based, it would end up f2p like swtor. Beside the leveling, this game is not even close to be as good as the hype machine tried to convince us before the launch. I could definitly write a thesis on how it didnt deliver on that game like for swtor; I even play swtor longer than gw2 before leaving both game.

  • Arch Age

Hohoho, sorry was still laughing, but you know what? During that laugh I thought of something else. Can anyone possibly imagine if we had other single player games translated to the MMO Sphere? Dragons Dogma came to mind, that would be beyond hilarious. Seeing dozens of player characters crawling over giant monsters stabbing them and being thrown off and stomped on. Magi and Rangers stalking the outskirts of the Beasts range blasting them with magic and arrows, setting up pitfalls and traps, fighting off adds and generally having an amazing time? Yes the Tears of Laughter come to my eyes when I think of how darn silly it is to think that single player games could work as MMO’s.

  • dragontheory42

That pocket chick makes it hard to watch this show.  She is very rude and forward.

    • Alex Handy

I don’t know. She normally skirts around what she’s trying to say, it seems, This is the first time I’ve seen her be really direct about her opinion. It was good. What’s the point have having a discussion show if no one has a differing opinion?

    • http://twitter.com/AisarGaming Aisar

Pokket is my favorite on this show.  Her opinions almost always perfectly mirror what I think, especially about Swtor and GW2.  I hope she stays with the show.

    • http://twitter.com/Hawkn93 Austin Carlin

I agree, I tend to turn off a show when I see she’s on it.

    • DrossRocket

As she should be because Jason was being a dick.

    • Sharuko

Different opinions are exactly what you need in a show like this.  Not a show where everyone is agreeing with everyone else.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mark.bradden.1 Mark Bradden

I find guild wars 2 lacks what world of warcraft has hoping next year they add more types of game play like wow got

  • Kingmob23

Pocket is spot on about GW2 in this episode. That game would be tanking hard if it was p2p, I would rather play WoW, Rift, TSW, SWTOR, LotR, DDO, and AoC over that garbage. Everyone I know who bought that game dropped it on the second week.

    • theunwarshed

at least you can actually have massive player vs player combat in GW2, unlike many of the games you list.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=684860058 Min Hsin Waitforit Shiek

anet built guild wars 2 with tje b2p model in mind from the start….. if they wanted to make a sub based game…. they would have built a totally diff game…. ppl who say that the current guildwars 2 would not work on a sub based model are retarded…. because if it was sub based…. the game would have been totally different.

i stopped playing wow, swtor as soon as i hit max lvl…… im still playing gw2 tho :) best mmo ive played in ages :) . what do u do in wow after hitting max lvl other than raids????? since the game is the best freaking thing since sliced bread?

rift would have been awesome????? if it was action based combat and wasnt grindy as fuck like wow…… i really like their soul system… but i hate the fact their questing system is just like wows….. grindy to hell (other than the rifts ofc)

also kingmob….. ur friends droped the game in 2 weeks like u did…. cos if they didnt have opinions similar to yours….. u wouldnt be friends now would u??? :p

  • integerx

We saw nothing major from Planetside 2 until a few months before beta started. It was also originally called Planetside Next about 6 months or so before beta started. I expect similar things with Everquest Next. So I wouldn’t be surprised if it was revealed early this year with a beta starting a few months later and release at the end of the year. Smedley said it would be playable by the next SOE Live.

Guild Wars 2 may or may have not failed based on the definition of failure. The P2P market just isn’t there anymore. F2P is where the majority of the money is.

TESO is going to be a failure because it won’t be TES. It’ll be a WoW-GW2 hybrid with TES lore. I disagree with Pokket that MMOs are about grouping. MMOs are about a massive amount of people in the world, regardless whether someone wants to group or not. What isn’t MMO are instances because it takes you out of that world. That is a CORPG feature stuffed into an MMO.

First off, I know it is a bit early but Happy New Year! Love the V-neck sweater.

The bragging of soloing a boss weakened for press and then bad mouthing a whole community  of Star wars (SWOTR?) has lost you one viewer.

  • http://twitter.com/cecilandblues Anthony Botz

On the SWTOR vs GW2 hyped, failed, would have failed diversion that happened while talking about TESO. Both of these games drew in larger audiences at launch. Hype and timing played a big part in both cases. There is understandably going to be some section of this over inflated population that realizes that the game they bought is not the game they imagined, or expected. These things happen. I think the difference between the games is how they delt with this. You could argue that the press was harder on SWTOR. Maybe having subscription numbers that could be measured was the difference. I feel like the marketing for GW2 continues to be on point after release, where as the SWTOR marketing was all over the place making odd promises.

  • Jado Cast

No one mentioned Black Desert?  IMO, that looks even better than Bless.  Bless looks like another Tera to me.  Black Desert looks like what TESO should look like IMO.  That’s probably what I would want to play most based on the trailer.  Next would be NeverWinter,   I hope TESO ends up a great game but i’m extremely skeptical   I would also like to see ArcheAge make it to NA in 2013.

2012 was a GREAT YEAR for games in general, and I think we are going to see a drought in 2013, not in just MMO’s but games overall.  Maybe that will give me time to catch up on some Torch Light 2, and maybe get back into RIFT.

  • Joseph Winn

Agree with Jason that being overhyped is more a problem with the player than the game or game maker. Many people plays these MMOs in beta and know what they’re getting into. The game doesn’t change into something different when it launches. Often, it’s in a better shape at launch than in beta. The only thing that changes is the player’s behavior from a habit of needing to hype themselves pre-launch to no longer needing to live off of hype with the game actually in their hands.

If you feel a game was overhyped then it’s mostly you or your fellow player’s fault. I played some SWTOR beta and I saw that the game would not satisfy me in beta. Yes, it was being hyped, but the game is what the game was. I played the GW2 beta and liked what I played.

Hype is this nebulous quality or thing that can’t be related to any actual answer to questions of why. MMOs have betas and informative feedback from those betas. Base your interest on playing the game and on the information present. Don’t try to mine emotions from others experiences and turn it into hype for yourself.

  • DrossRocket

For once I agree with Pocket. Jason W. is too fixated on the total subscriber numbers to judge a success of a game.

MMO’s can survive on smaller populations of the sub 500k realm. MMOs can survive in the sub 250k realm. Look at Eve. it has now around 300k+ subs, but it took years to get there. Ultima has been around for nearly 15 years still with 100k players all paying monthly.

If a company built a Dark Souls type online game, people would play and people would pay. I’m one of them.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bill-Gerrettie-Jr/1287578323 Bill Gerrettie Jr

Ok, GW2 was over-hyped? It’s made over $150,000,000 in two quarters, $118m of that in Q4. Yeah, its totally over-hyped.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/VU7FTNUZEEGUXT7QVQGNVS22HE lionfan96

Watch out for Citadel of Sorcery.  not coming out for a while, but that game is going to be pretty sweet.

  • Sharuko

I read this somewhere else, and if just feels right.  TESO will be released in 2013 and on 11/12/13 (Tuesday).

There is zero reason for TESO to rush their game unlike GW2 and SWTOR.  They don’t have NCSoft or EA or public investors pressuring them every quarter.  They are a private company with private investors and after seeing the recent failures like GW2 and SWTOR they know they must release a game when it is finished and not rush the game.

With that said they seem confident in 2013 and I don’t see any reason why it won’t be a Holiday 2013 release.  This isn’t the early 2000s anymore, with technology the way it is you don’t need 2-3 year hype cycles to sell millions of copies.

I do agree with Pokket about GW2 but I would take it even further.  If GW2 had a subscription it would have been the biggest failure in MMO history.  I would like to see one stat that shows how GW2 is a success currently.  I can provide about a dozen that shows GW2 was a massive failure.

Here do a test yourself, go to the Mists in sPvP.  Look at the active servers, then look at the amount of players per server.  You will notice less than 200 players playing during primetime in sPvP.  SWTOR has more than that in their Warfronts and WoW has more players than that in their 10-14 bracket.

    • SoMuchMass

TESO is a joke! Such a boring, unispired, and over-hyped game. Can’t wait to see it fall face first!

      • Sharuko

        lol nice name.

  • http://twitter.com/Winterskorn Paul

Actually to correct the delay of Neverwinter was to implement PVP in the game.
