TWIMMO 91: Jesus Patch Blues

The Jesus Patch has risen!

But the ranked Warzones didn’t make it in to SWTOR Update 1.2. It’s going to take more than the Force to put down this nerd rage.

Stephen Reid came out to say it isn’t ready and BioWare will be trying to put the ranked system in before 1.3.

How disappointed are you?

We see some Defiance pre-Alpha footage. Bugs are everywhere and they need a serious amount of bullets to go with the splatter. Will this venture lead to a SyFy classic? Then again, has SyFy had a classic?

More importantly, will Defiance get lost in the swell of new MMOFPS games?

En Masse teased some Sci-Fi in TERA and we were pondering what it could all be about last week. The revelation was that Farscape, Stargate and Pitch Black star Claudia Black will join Michael Hogan — Colonel Tigh of BSG — in adding voices to the game. So no spaceships crashing on top of the noob island then.

Throw in Planetside 2 and the first glimpse of Neverwinter the MMO and we have a busy week of news.

Fortunately FredBob returns from vacation — note the tan — to help Mike B aka Fony and Mike Schaffnit bring you all you can handle, in this week’s TWIMMO!

1.2 is a complete fail pvp wise. Fight in a warzone for 15 minutes, do your very best and get 15 wz commendations. bioware is not smart enough to fire those morons on the “pvp” team.
Oh btw no ranked wz after getting some players re subbing.Greedy pigs !

    • http://www.facebook.com/timothy.rutar Timothy Rutar

Hmm, 15 Comms?? Maybe don’t be bad cause I get 10+ medals each game with over 100 Comms…  Re-subbing people I feel for you.  But when multiple people that are testing ranked WZ’s say stuff is still broken they need to fix it.  Oh and if you resubbed before today guess what, free 30 days, assuming people didn’t re-sub for Ranked WZ’s under 50.  I see ranked WZ’s ‘pre-season’ starting a few weeks before 1.3 then a week or two after 1.3 Season 1 beginning.

      • http://www.facebook.com/chaz.rpg Chaz Davis

Even if we get completely rolled in a warzone, I get around 35 commendations, it kinda sucks, but if we are doing well we can get up to 100.

It really sucks that they couldnt get ranked warzones in, but it wouldnt have really worked without cross server queing, so I understand why they are delaying it.

I see they were pretty quick to compensate people by giving everyone with a lvl 50 character a free month, that is pretty cool and it will keep people around until they can get ranked warzones ready to go.

      • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Even at 100 commendations per match, it would take over 930 matches to take full Battlemaster gear to full War Hero gear. So, is the goal now to grind full War Hero gear before the start of Rated WZ season 1.  Usually my goal was to have a full set of the latest PVP gear before the end of the season, not grind it before the season even starts.  Or will season 1 be a new tier of Warzone gear.

    • Bill Lia

      You’re doing it wrong sir

  • H S

So now they are giving free 30 sub for level 50 players. LOL, what desperation. But to claim “in celebration of 1.2″ instead of saying what it is, a screw over of PvP players who stuck around for ranked WZ’s.

BW just can’t get honest about anything, even when caught in a bait and switch decision.

    • Bill Lia

Yeah because BW fully planned on making themselves look bad by advertising something for 1.2 that didn’t make the cut.

Ranked WZ’s was having issues on the test server (which isn’t news). Much rather them hold it for a bit then release something that is broken. Would love to see you rage at that.

  • MMO_Doubter

As someone on the Official SWTOR forum coined it: the JUDAS Patch.

  • Ricky W

Glad i never resubbed for rated warzones.

  • JJGlyph

Your crime TV slot needs to be upgraded to Castle, Mike.

  • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

The 30 days free game play just stinks of desperation and makes the Blizz annual pass look like a stroke of pure marketing genus.  I see a business paper coming along. Give away 30 days to a pissed off clientele vs. giving away a game with a real money auction house.

    • Bill Lia

Sooooo giving away a free max level character dosen’t stink of desperation then? Because by your logic giving away free things is being desperate.

      • ChristopherMitchell1

What he means is Blizz’s ‘desperate’ move actually gained them something called lots and lots of money. BW ‘desperate’ move is just that, a ‘desperate’ move lol

        • mcsumo

A lot of pissed off customers, including me. People with a lvl 50 are valued customers? What about those who play RP/super-casual/have a busy life/waited for 1.2 before pushing a main to 50 etc etc etc?

Someone who started at the same time as me and unsubbed, can get a 7 day reward by resubbing now….I can get nothing, with continuous sub, a 42, 47, 31, 30 and 16……. WTF?

          • ChristopherMitchell1

There is also no incentive for people like me to even try it now that it has features that ‘should have been at launch.’

      • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Are you talking about Blizz giving away Cata and boosting a toon to level 80 (not max level)? While that was an “eye popping” move, the business case is clear for an expansion at the end of it’s play time.  Invite unsub players to come back and play the 80 to 85 content with the goal they will purchase Mist of Pandaria and continue leveling to 90 and eventually beyond.  Or sign up for the annual pass and get Diablo III (with real money auction house) and Mist of Pandaria beta access for free.

The 30 days of free SWTOR access seems to be BW “fudging the numbers” when my game time runs out next week. Bioware continues to count me as a subscriber after my paid time runs out.  I expect BW will send me a free seven day pass, trying to get me to come back once rated WZs are ready.

      • H S

LOL, biodrones say the darnedest things

  • Randy McRandom

Now I canceled my account months ago so this does not really sting me…..but man.  I really do feel for the people that signed up again just for ranked warzones.  I mean….wow.  The “tin foil hat” in me has to question the less than 12 hour notice for dropping warzones.  They HAD to have known that this was not going to make release at least a week ago.  The only thing that can come to mind is they wanted the subs.  Plain and simple.  The investor call is coming and I think they wanted to their numbers back up.  But of course then the 30 days free time came in which was a good call.  But then again the free time really does nothing for people that just playing SWTOR for pvp..

Also on the forums it seemed that the new raid was cleared in only HOURS after it came up.  Now it was not Nightmare mode since that is not available yet but still.  Was really looking forward to SOMETHING that would stir my gut into coming back to the game but now it’s even worse.  Free 30 days and now the actual game is already 20 dollars cheaper than when it first launched.  That really says something to a lot of players I think.

Also I feel that much of this is related to the lack of people on the PTS.  With no transfers or instant 50′s they did not have the testing pool they needed.  But judging from the forums it seemed that Bioware did not take a lot of testers seriously.

this is from GW2 fb page
“Many of our community members are asking about how long the pre-purchase offer will last.

Pre-purchase will run up until shortly before launch. However, we also
want to maintain a high quality of service for those who have
pre-purchased and are participating in the Beta Weekend Events.

With that in mind, if we max out our beta server capacity, we may
*temporarily* make pre-purchase unavailable until we can bring more
capacity online. Bottom line is if you want to participate in the Beta
    Weekend Events, don’t wait.”

In my country pre-purchase was sold out in 20 min… I think sales could top 1 milion.

  • Elusive Fox

If you have played any tera you would think that this is great news… 80-90% of TERA’s VA is beyond terible… which is sad because I have seen KTera and JTera and both have, maybe not good va, but much less annoying VA.

    • http://twitter.com/StoleTarts Megan

People who complain about the VA in SWTOR should play a few hours in FFXIV with absolutely no VO for the quests. The silence starts to creep you out after awhile.

As soon as I saw Defiance I thought Borderlands MMO…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matthew-Brindle/1150900802 Matthew Brindle

I liked the ./hack anime and games.  The story was intertwined between both the show and game content.

  • http://twitter.com/lvl80elite Christopher

Shaff, dont be a dumbass lol. Not every game with bugs and guns = Starship Troopers.  You are going to upset the ghost of Heinlein. =P

    • MMO_Doubter

It sure gave me that Starship Troopers vibe.

Pretty sure Mike S was talking about the movie, not the book.

      • ChristopherMitchell1

book was by far better tho >.>

  • Dixhallpike

Where is Gary? Does anyone know? I avent seen any explanation to his absence.

  • http://twitter.com/SRevision Alex Rose

Should I write an article titled “why I wont be playing TOR” ?… oh wait right, you cant play too, servers down. XD

  • http://twitter.com/DaveC524 Dave

Servers are broken, people’s guild banks are gone, and the servers went back down for maintenance until some time tomorrow. Rumor is, Bioware can’t restore servers due to limitations of the Hero engine, and as such, people might permanently lose the contents of said guild banks.

  • http://twitter.com/LiamRdsn Liam Richardson

They implemented a patch to fix the character deletion problem, and when they put the servers back up, all the map changes had reverted back to pre-patch 1.2. Apparently you’ve not lost all your stuff, but the game won’t be back up till midnight in the UK.

  • Kristinn Heidar

BW screwed up big time with the latest “fix” for the 1.2 patch issues.  Game is severly broken atm and all servers have been taken down again.  Do not expect to get playing it tonigh if you are in EU.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EQPUBED7JUPX5RBEQSBVRBXX7E Gramis

Im Very surprised you did not talk about how Defiance is going to be on the Console and compete against Dust 514. This will be very big for the game, especially if you believe it is aimed at the Halo audience.

  • christopher longley

    i thought gary was back…

  • Senatic

About MMO’s using social structure as a crutch for crappy gameplay.

Can anyone actually honestly say they’d have played thousands of hours of World of Warcraft if it was basically the same but you were playing it completely alone? (without subs and it being balanced around a SP of course).

I very much doubt that anyone would have, and that’s kinda the point he was making. On its own, without the social aspect, many MMO’s are just not that great. We’re finally seeing some MMO’s taking the gameplay one step further with games like Vindictus, Tera, Guild Wars 2 and well as games like Dust, Firefall and so on.

  • Bestow

Anyone else scribbled TORtanic on their TOR boxes and tossed it at someone?

  • http://www.facebook.com/rammur65 Roger Means

dunno i still enjoy tor so does my entire guild i think people just like to bitch

    • Eaker82

Meh if you enjoy it cool, I just personally think that its horribly underpar for Bioware. When Trion comes out of nowhere and can make a better MMO then Bioware something is wrong. Now you might not like playing Rift and thats fine this isnt really a Rift vs ToR debate, But I have buddies that love Star Wars and i’m a Star Wars nut too but They like Rift more then ToR because Rift has better enviroment and gameplay then ToR. The only thing that makes ToR playable is the cutscenes if it didnt do that it would be shutdown I think. I played recently and there was still a ton of bugs. the world were ok and even though I just got to 20 my friends arent happy with the endgame. I dont know just seems like enough to bitch about.

  • DoctorOverlord

    Good episode.   Thanks guys.

I have to point out D&D has influenced fantasy computer games for more than last ten years.  Try the last 30+ years! :)   The very first fantasy ASCii computer games Rogue and Moria were using D&D as a fuondation.  We have various mechanics like Hit points and levels in video games thanks to D&D.  Its reach is lonnnnggg.

I couldn’t agree more with Matt Higby.  Since the beginings of the MMO genre the gameplay has been terrible,  Look at UO and EQ – would either of those games survived as a single player RPGs?   Even the gameplay of  modern MMOs like WoW and EVE is debatable.   Would anyone play those simply as games or do people play them because they are a shared experience?

Why can’t we have a shared gaming experience that also has good game mechanics?  FPS games have been doing this for years.   The concept never sunk into the skulls of previous MMO developers and MMO players just  made excuses and went along, happily shelling out their money.

It’s good to see MMOs finally evolving, throwing away the flawed old-school mechanics and focusing on making games that use the community aspect to enhance good gameplay rather than as a crutch to make up for historically terrible design.
