TWIMMO: Ninja RIFT

The Game Developers Conference started this week. Why BioWare had a summit at the same time, we will never know. However, that will not stop us from catching the latest news. And the biggest question has been, “Where has RIFT been hiding?” Based its newest trailer, Trion tucked itself away creating new content for its fans. Our esteemed panel chalk the silence up to the producers of RIFT waiting for the Star Wars: The Old Republic hype to end. When considering the amount of press the lightsaber game received, it’s probably true. RIFT has always been about great release timing, perhaps this next update wave is great timing, too.

Every week, GAMEBREAKER brings you the greatest in MMO news and commentary. Gary Gannon and Mike B join Mike Schaffnit from their hotel in San Francisco just around the corner from GDC. Gary and Mike B expound on their experience with World of Warplanes as well as explaining why CCP might not be as crazy as we thought it was. All this plus, of course, your viewer questions answered on This Week In MMO.

TWIMMO: Ninja RIFT

  • JJGlyph

CCP astounds me sometimes. I didn’t think Dust 514 would be marketable, but they found a great niche to exploit. PSN users aren’t accustomed to F2P games like PC gamers are. When I told this to my PS3 buddies they got excited. A game they would have never bought is now on their radar.

    P.S. Guild Wars 2

    • Old Ben

They didn’t so much “find a niche” as stick themselves into one. Making a PS3 version is great, but making it a PS3 exclusive… probably not so much.

By doing that, they’re losing all the EVE players (and everyone else who prefers to play on a PC), who would have jumped on this immediately. I’m sure they get some money from Sony for making it a PS3 exclusive, but I wonder if that’s enough to offset the loss of PC gamers (who aren’t merely more likely to know CCP and EVE, but also tend to be older and have more disposable income to spend on game items).

Looks like a bit of a shot in the foot, but maybe their deal with Sony allows them to release a PC version after a few months.

      • JJGlyph

I agree it should also be for PC since Eve Online is for PC, but there’s no easy way to get ppl interested beyond that. When a game shows up in the PSN store millions of people will at least glance at it. Especially if it’s a full length game that’s free.

      • Bluecewe

In a recent CCP interview trailer, they touched upon something which I think is very significant; the idea that in making Dust 514, CCP are opening the Eve universe up to an entirely new audience who would otherwise stray from getting involved with the gameplay mechanics of Eve Online.

The interview trailer can be found here, though it’s really just a marketing clip; nothing ground-breaking to be heard, apart from what I mentioned previously.

Right move CCP, right move… let me to beta already

  • Randy McRandom

Since the most recent MMO was such a disappointment (canceled last month) I have been a little bored.  I got an e-mail from Trion to come check out Rift again for 3 days.  I played Rift for just a tad over 3 months and had some fun.  Left because….just a little bored.

I actually re-subed for a month after playing again.  Holy cow have they added A LOT of content.  The current world event is fun, the new Ember Isle is gorgeous, and the community is solid.  I was very very impressed with the updates.  Rift is free now up to level 20 if people want to check it out.

I know it sounds like a huge plug but really, I was impressed.  Even though it was released over a year ago the graphics blow away any MMO currently out.

Great show guys, but all I could think of was Gary and Mike posing for pics in a photo booth…

    • Roger McKay

I think Rift, WoW, and MineCraft show how little graphics matter.

  • http://twitter.com/Master10K Master10K

I wonder if Rift will have another free weekend, so I can try out all the new stuff.

But Guild Wars 2… nuff said.

    • Chris Ramby

       Free to level 20.. forever!

      • http://twitter.com/Master10K Master10K

That doesn’t work for me, with my old account and 4 level 50s.

    • http://twitter.com/MrMarcusBailey Marcus Bailey

March 8th through March 14th is free.

    • Azuri

Rift has a free week going on btw

      • http://twitter.com/Master10K Master10K

Thanks for telling. Just finished check it out again.

  • http://twitter.com/WaylandX JB

Great show guys! TY for the GDC info!

  • Krzysztof Kotarba

    zordon calling!

  • http://twitter.com/Dagus_94 David Gustafsson

    Awesome videos

  • Bluecewe

Gary didn’t come across as entirely sober. I guess that’s to be expected.

    • Roger McKay

Expected, maybe, but totally unprofessional. The boss needs to have a few words with him.

      • Bluecewe

That’s the problem though; he is the boss.

I really enjoy GBTV’s shows and have no doubt in my mind that I will be watching them for the foreseeable future, however it might be an idea to have these sorts of shows where they are pretty casual as “specials” of the main show, rather than a fully-fledged “episode”.

        • JJGlyph

Do you really want this site as boring as all the other uptight media organizations? I enjoy Gamebreaker bc they keep it semi-casual and humorous.

          • Bluecewe

I really didn’t want to come across like that. I too enjoy the casual style of GBTV.

But I worry that some people may get the wrong idea from time to time. I’m not saying be uptight 24/7, I’m saying if you know something is going to be very casual, then make it a “special” rather than a full on “episode”.

        • iamthemikeb

For the record, that drink you saw I the show was the first of the night. Our quirkiness was due to just straight having fun.

          • Roger McKay

Perhaps it was your first, but something was up with Gary. No question.

Whatever the cause, he was in no condition to do the show.

          • iamthemikeb

I’m astonished that someone with your post count would place himself on such an incredibly high horse on such an issue. I’m through with this conversation as I’d rather not deal with unreasonable people.

          • Roger McKay

My POST COUNT? As if that had any significance at all. BTW, I am no newbie to forum posting on MMOs.

If it was a non-issue, you would not have replied at all.

If GBTV is professional, then professionalism should be expected.

I have no beef with you personally, nor do I usually have issue with Gary’s work. This episode was beneath him.

            MMOFringe

          • HarmonBlues

I’ve seen enough of your comments across the site to see that you only post things to insult or bait others into arguments.

          • Roger McKay

1 – I do not post to insult or bait others. I make valid points. I am completely unconcerned if people are upset or not by them. It is irrelevant.

2 – My sense of moral and intellectual superiority is not delusional.

          • HarmonBlues

Those statements were of my own opinion, not a claim of fact. I’m sorry if I offended you, regardless of my opinion regarding your conduct on GBTV. I usually conduct myself in a less heated manner of confrontation when my posts are of that nature, but I was a bit upset.

These guys are trying to entertain and inform and I found that specific post a bit too insensitive. I tend to enjoy their level of semi-professionalism, at least how I see it. The mix of professional and casual candor just works very well for this site in my opinion.

Its the GBTV staff’s choice if they want to ramp up the strictness of their conduct in the future, but I didn’t see a problem with that video and no one appeared plastered to begin with.

          • Roger McKay

No problem. I get much worse on a regular basis. I appreciate your relative politeness.

I have been a fan of GBTV for more than a year. I did not think this episode was of their usual high standards.

          • Bluecewe

As I have said in an edit to my original comment; as the show went on the usual GBTV balance between professionalism and fun was met. The first few minutes were a bit odd, so I decided to make a casual remark; nothing serious.

      • http://tbergeron.com/ Tommy Bergeron

“Expected”, “Unprofessional”, Stop freakin’ QQing. People come here for the fun of watching GBTV’s crew having fun. GBTV’s are the ONLY shows that always gets me back to MMOs. If it weren’t about them, I wouldn’t be playing any MMOs since two years.

GBTV is drunken Gary and Mike, DEAL WITH IT.

  • gary lusk

bosses made of loot is an awesome idea…

    Best…..Twimo….EVER

  • http://twitter.com/zerconi Samuli Rauatmaa

This episode was World of Warplanes-ly good.

    BEST END :-D

  • http://twitter.com/MrMarcusBailey Marcus Bailey

A great show and was glad that there was finally some Rift news on GBTV again.  I don’t think there will 3 factions though (unless they said it and it was under NDA still).

  • Azuri

Rift: Best MMO on the market atm.

    • JJGlyph

Agreed, but I think that will change this year. Firefall. Guild Wars 2 and Tera are all making combat more fun in an MMO… and let’s face it… combat IS gameplay.

  • Phelar

So it seems like the team at Rift are really going after Guild Wars 2.  The comment about dynamic events earlier this week, and now with the video saying open world pvp with long trem benefits, world v world v world.

    • http://twitter.com/Master10K Master10K

Yet no matter what features Rift will add or enhance, they will all seem rather inferior to GW2′s counterpart. I mean can you seriously imagine Rift having open world PvP that is on par or even superior to GW2′s WvW? I know I can’t, having both played Rift and seen WvW in action (hopefully I’ll get a chance to play that as well soon).

      • Roger McKay

Yeah, I doubt Rift will do the open RvR as well as GW2 will.

  • Roger McKay

Rift, obviously, is in serious trouble. To have ANY chance, they need to offer different things from what GW2 is going to provide.

Open RvR is cool, but GW is going heavy in that direction.

Other than cool mounts, I don’t see what Rift can offer other than the raiding they already have.

    • http://twitter.com/MrMarcusBailey Marcus Bailey

From what I have seen the GW2 dynamic events seem more interesting than Rift’s dynamic content.  I would be happier if Rift went after the GW2 questing/dynamic strategy more than have two mediocre systems competing against each other.  I do think the raiding aspect will be players will miss in GW2.

      • JJGlyph

The problem with Rifts is there isn’t any variety. By the time I was mid-level I was bored to death. GW2 has 1,500+ public events instead of a handful repeated. Let’s hope they spent time making each feel unique.

From the 20 or so events I’ve seen I am optimistic… though they look far too easy to me.

        • Roger McKay

Whenever I hear about open world content ‘scaling’ I become concerned about exploits and balance. It sounds good, but I have yet to see it done right.

As for rifts, yeah I got bored even faster than you.

My choice would have been for a more polished version of WH Online’s public quests.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nate-Glass/505341877 Nate Glass

Its been said…but, BEST TWIMMO EVER!  You can tell the guys have a lot of fun when they actually get to hang out in person for a change. Thanks for the news GBTV!

  • Roger McKay

    CCP won’t sell “unfair advantages”

    Define “unfair”

  • http://www.facebook.com/Kantrellk Pete Foster

Best ending ever! great show as always

  • pc11

Gary is the perfect stereotypical geek. First time he gets out of the house has one beer and gets wasted lol

  • http://tbergeron.com/ Tommy Bergeron

Amazing episode as always, it’s always more than a pleasure to see how much fun you’re having together. Some may interpret them as “unprofessional” but they are just plain WRONG. GBTV is what we see here, and this is also the reason why it’s been the ONLY show I’ve been listening on the web, ever. KEEP UP THE MORE THAN AMAZING WORK!!! You guys are geniuses.

  • http://www.facebook.com/prgx52 Pat Are Green

I liked the new 1-60 but the 60-80 was the worst experience in WoW. The. WORST.

  • Elusive Fox

Rift always had good story tie ins right from day one.  Unfortunately though the made a few bad decisions early on like unlimited free server transfers, and buggy raiding content. This had an impact on a lot of good raiding guilds as members left both fealing frustrations from bugs or difficulty and guild hopped or just left in general.

“What is going on over there?” says Mike S with disturbed look on his face.

    Priceless.

  • Ben Ritter

They need to have a reaction button up there for Troll. *COUGHGARYCOUGH*

  • Richard S

I love your show guys and this was a funny episode, but please don’t do one half-drunk ever again :)  (Okay maybe once a year , but you should save it for a holiday show or Gary’s birthday or something).

Very interesting to see how RIFTs is upping their game.   And Blizzard efforts do ring of some desperation.   They must really think their pandas can keep people playing.

    • MMO_Doubter

       It looks like desperation, yeah.

So many gimmicks to keep people around. Rather than things like – FIXING the GYs in WSG. Removing the heirloom gear that makes play as a new player miserable.

The story will be told by the game play elements added in MoP. Will WoW be a bigger, more fun GAME? I don’t know.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Lardbait Taylor Cooper

I really love how relaxed you guys are in TWIMMO and all of your other shows. You guys swearing more often would be the icing on the cake :)

  • Revanhavoc

Listen, this broadcasting is masterpiece theatre. It appeals exactly to my demographic, my personality, and many gamers like me.

Keep updating, upgrading, and growing Gamebreaker.

But NEVER change who you are Gary, Mike B or any of the staff. Your personalities are why the people come, and will continue to come.

I don’t know..I can’t see myself ever going back to Rift. I don’t think Trion’s idea of fun and mine are the same thing.

Rift had very little to make me feel like I was a hero or an individual. It felt a lot more like WoW than a “next-gen” experience. I felt a bit lured in by the way they advertised Rifts, but they weren’t really anything like they said they would be. Zone wide invasions were fun at first, but not only were they repetitive, but they became annoying, because the rewards just sucked for doing them, so people stopped.I spent 3 months playing Rift and really didn’t enjoy it by the end. Guild Wars 2, TSW and maybe Arch Age look a lot more interesting to me.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joao-Vicente/100000881627920 João Vicente

    First on Legendary now here….

Not sure if drunk Gary is awful or amazing : /

Good show, i think.. cause of the audio didnt understand half of it, still good job! was fun.
