In this week’s episode of AfterDark, one viewer asks what the guys would like covered if the World of Warcraft move were a trilogy.

We’ve all heard a lot about the World of Warcraft movie — mostly why it hasn’t been made yet. But one viewer wants to know what the guys would like to see lore-wise if the movie were made into a trilogy. Josh points out that there is so much Warcraft lore, not only in the MMO but also the original games.

Mike adds that just one character has enough story to cover a three movie arc.

Of course, the guys take other questions such as  whether or not game companies listen to fans too much and what the deal with My Little Pony is.  It’s all part of this very musical and potentially traumatizing episode of After Dark.

A complete list of questions in this week’s show follows.

  • Do game companies listen to their fans too much? When should they say ‘no’?
  • Explain the My Little Pony phenomenon.
  • If the World of Warcraft movie was made into a trilogy, what three plot points would you have to make the story?
  • Would community creations, IE: item creator, do anything to help D3 as a whole?
  • How do you feel about PC games having a release months after their console counterparts? E.G. RE6 AC3
  • Thoughts on World First Race so far? It didn’t finish in the 1st week, even excluding Ra-Den, no Lei-Shen kill.
  • Which StarCraft II race should I play?
  • Thoughts of the EA CEO resignation?
  • Devs and players usually praise player made content. Why dont’ we see more of it?

If you have questions for AfterDark, be sure to join the guys every Tuesday night.  Or, if you can’t make it to the show, you can still send questions via twitter using the #gbafterdark hashtag.

And, if you missed last week’s episode, be sure to check it out here.

Oh, looked up the term Brony from the My Little Pony phenomenon. That explains why Darnell sings about My Little Pony in the Darnelliffy addon.

so. was it me, or was there no music and/or sound effects in this show?

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Yep, there was significant technical “issues.” I’m assuming the PC that provides additional audio was not working.

at some point, i believe, the community becomes more knowledgeable about the intricacies of the game than the devs, especially concerning class dynamics. that doesn’t mean that every person in the community knows what they’re talking about, or every little qq is legit. devs and the community at large know which community members they should be listening to.

if the CEO isn’t responsible for a long history of under performing products under his stewardship of the company, then who is? the CEO is the captain of the ship.

No better example is when Steve Jobs returned to Apple. He made sweeping changes in management and completely changed the direction of the company.

Still though we can’t really see publishers as developers. Publishers real attachment to games especially as a corporation and of such size, they are just financiers who want to protect assets. I would equally blame developers for not taking a clear stand, pitching themselves well, representing/protecting their would be customer’s interests in their bargaining process of getting funding.

You can’t blame EA for placing strings attached, nobody is forcing devs to make deals with publishers. Who else is going to be lenient and has that level of money? Unlike Activision-Blizzard, EA doesn’t “OWN” all of the titles or companies when they put their logo on games. There is no overarching CEO the developers have to obey “for life” on the product, publishers depending on the contract really aren’t the owners and, they could be.

With that being said there is some things EA can do to better on not meddling in companies or pushing them to oversell them on all sorts of extra profit modes. It is just developers made the deal to, they need the backbone, and well-developed pitch before hitting them up for funding.

Bobby Kotick mentioning that name, if anything he is the worst of the mentality revealed when speaking to the public, giving him and Activision a pass and not EA is rather hypocritical, arrogant(or ignorant) and foolish.

      • Kagitaar

        Vivendi owns Activision-Blizzard.

EA does not own all the companies they publish for, but the ones they do own they have a tendency to bleed dry and leave broken by the side of the road, while Activision keeps them chained to franchises and alive. Which is better is up to you.

        • Jeremy Keat

It has been clear in hundreds, maybe thousands of comments I have seen of people “boycotting” or bantering attacks on games and dev companies that have an EA logo because EA invested in funding the game. It hasn’t been ONLY those games that are owned by EA, which isn’t anywhere near a majority. Blaming EA on titles and things they really didn’t have full responsibility over for the failures of entertaining and satisfying customers is foolish and people have done it.

I don’t like EA myself but I don’t like Activision, Activision keeps companies alive but at the customers being screwed and manipulated which I am sure many WoW and CoD fanboys are all over it. So what if an EA brand goes under, the original devs shouldn’t have sold out if they cared, but they’re probably didn’t, so what. It makes little sense that “the ones they do own they have a tendency to bleed dry and leave broken”, if that is the case it only hurts themselves, nobody else more. It’s like saying a company ran themselves bankrupt, so I hate them and are going to boycott them.

If a title does go under a new dev or publisher could just buy it out anyways. People are just playing the scapegoat game without looking at the facts.

I already know about Vivendi but being a french media conglomerate is besides the point, we all know what Activision is, as their US game industry investment division of the business.

Please stop calling it “World of Warcraft” movie. Anybody who truly loves and become enticed into the lore knows and should understand it was Warcraft 3 and the lore setup from its predecessor, WoW hasn’t done anything but dull up the lore in comparison.

Warcraft 3 was actually heavily focused on telling and important, epic story in which the player really could feel immersed with. WoW was retcons, wall of texts, story derailments and things of minimal concern or satire. Warcraft 3 on it’s own could put out 3-4 full length movies (over 2 hours)

Warcraft 3 is where the bulk of the story was and Warcraft 1 and mainly 2 a great premise which in itself would justify a movie and where WoW starts the intrigue in the story somewhat ends. Not until TBC does it really become engaging again and parts of WotLK, but being an MMO there is no good consistent viewpoint or story to tell from either an eye in the sky or character. Since then it wasn’t anything significant.

The original lore is what sold this IP and gave it its immense popularity along with Warcraft 3 being an incredibly fun game at the time but the story was crucial with great production quality and emphasis on clear, sensible and engaging storytelling.

Okay, I said I’d do it so here it is.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is, in my opinion, a very well made and cute show, which has garnered it a large following who call themselves Bronies (just like Dr. Who fans have Whovians). This following started on the internet, so of course it has spread like anything on the internet does, which has caused a huge backlash from those who think that grown men watching a show intended for little girls is bad for various reasons, most of which stems from the general culture that feminine things are inherently weak and only for girls, while masculine things are strong, to be praised, and for everyone. Guys have to be tough, and like tough things, or you are somehow a freak and/or gay. Bronies, which is a gender-neutral term, reject this and like a perceived girly thing, so most reactions already start out negative, born out of ignorance. Usually, when people are shown the show and it’s not just what people think it is, they may not like it themselves, but they come away with an understanding that it’s not this crazy abomination.

Now all fandoms have their weird and dark sides (and our share of proselytizers can really grate on non-Brony nerves, especially since love and tolerance are so thoroughly un-American right now), but when you have something like MLP, the already negative reaction you get from these dark things is amplified by many orders of magnitude. What the caller was referring to was a plushie, not normally uncommon in our community, as our artists are myriad and many talented, but this one was special. The guy who made it added an extra feature, a slit on the back, for the reason you can imagine. Now this caused a bit of a stir, as a chorus of WTFs rang out, though in the community it was quickly diffused with some rather wry humor regarding better uses for the plushie, such as slippers, drink holder, pen storage, etc. When someone outside the fandom hears about it, they freak the hell out, thinking that justifies this already nebulous hate, but I have news for them. Rule 34 is a rule because it is always there, no matter the subject matter, though that does not mean it is representative of the entire community any more than the WoW forums are for WoW or the racist screamers in LoL.

Operation Icebreaker, the incident involving activision in the show, was part of the reason Vince, Zampella, and half of Infinity ward( IE CoD:MW dev studio incase anyone forgot) to quit. They later sued Activision and settled for tens of millions of dollars(yes I know this legally means nothing). According to the lawsuit, Activision was trying to find ways to fire IW devs so they wouldnt have to pay out those tens of millions in bonuses their contracts mandated.

IE activision is a scumbag company that doesn’t want to pay its employees after making one of the most successful video game franchises in existence. Poor business practices are why people wanted kotick fired(even if it wasn’t legally proved).

i could not find the story that Eduardo made on the forum…. HALP ME!

Wrt MLP, everyone, especially non bronies, should watch the Brony Documentary that was created by John Delancie and Tara Strong, it will open your eyes (hopefully).
