Blizzard Q4 Earnings - Legendary the World of Warcraft Show

Just before the show, Blizzard presented its fourth quarter earnings call, and said absolutely nothing new. OK, maybe “absolutely” is  a bit strong, but the news coming out of call was no real surprise to anyone. For starters, subscription base for World of Warcraft sits nearly where it was last quarter — only a 100k drop from 10.3 million to 10.2 million. Panelist Mike B expected the numbers to drop more, especially since, as President Michael Morhaime put it, “our biggest competitor launched in December.” However, December is generally a big month for WoW anyway, and it’s not the 800k loss we heard a one or two calls ago. Does that mean WoW‘s future is still bright?

World of Warcraft tops the charts as the biggest MMO in history. Gary Gannon has gathered the best in the industry to discuss this wildly popular game: Mike B aka Fony from the BFF Report and Josh Allen from the Weekly Marmot. This week, all of your earnings call questions have been answered, and the panel speculates what this can mean for the up-coming expansion Mists of Pandaria. For the latest on everything hitting the World of Warcraft, you must watch Legendary!

finally, now i have something to do at work.

  • Timothy Eng

I’m just thinking: I’m mid-twenties…. and I consider myself one the last generation that would understand the “super effective” joke.

I like how Mike B, and Gary are still laughing with me.

    • Joel Marazzo

Pokemon is still a thing. Didnt Black and White come out not too long ago? Do they still not have super effective stuff in there?

There are people like me as well, kinda in Lore’s shoes except I will be cancelling wow at the end of this expansion. I’m playing SWTOR when I don’t have to raid in WoW, and the only reason I’m still raiding in WoW is because my guild gave me the first legendaries. I have zero desire to resub for MoP. Not interrested at all in Pandaland and will then dedicate all my game time to SWTOR. So I’m certain there is another demographic that are currently “playing both” (as is the case with atleast 15 people in my guild.)

I’d do the same thing if it weren’t’ for the fact that SWTOR is pretty shitty atm. I mean yes if you wanna just level and that’s it then sure its pretty good, but if I wanted to play a single player game there are much better ones. PvP and PvE need to be fixed fast or else they’ll bleed out subs as more people get to the broken end game.

you forgot about the demographic that was playing both then dropped their swtor sub cause it was just so damn boring.

big reason wow has still that many is a lot of people did the d3 deal, i know about 20 buds that did that

  • Salts Dude

    Best lip-syncing ever.

I meant by my question to make raids last longer, as in have more tiers but keep the same amount of content. For example, in LFR you have a boss with 2 phases and 3 moves, then in Normal you have 2 phases and 4 or 5 moves, heroic you have a 3rd phase with 4-5 moves, and Super-Heroic you have 3 phases and 4-5 moves with tons of adds! I’m just saying more staggered scaling content like Lore said, but with more modes to extend the life of Raiding even further, rather than just farming the same thing over and over. Regardless you’re going to farm it, but more content just means more stepping stones for new raiders to step up. LFR has been amazing to give me a way to see and do the fights before actually seeing and doing the fights, so more tiers with gradual steps would be nice in my opinion.

Remember this is subbed not playing. I can tell you a lot of my guild don’t even play but they are subbed because of the annual pass

    Great episode :D thanks!

BTW subbed for donation recently, cause such quality stuff just shouldn’t be taken for granted.

I kept my sub for WoW while I tried SWTOR. WoW is still the best mmo in my opinion and I can’t wait for MoP. I will try GW2 also, but will not drop my wow sub for that either.

  • Revanhavoc

Loved all the prognostications in this episodes, especially the shoutout to Warcraft 4! Oh lord I’m waiting for that one as long as I’ve been waiting for Half-Life 3…And will continue waiting until Eternity’s End…

I can see them giving away mop to the people that signed up for the annual pass.  At the moment they have 10mil subs, and only 1mil signed up for the pass. That gives them being able to give away 10% (im sure roughly) and still recoup the”cost” of the expansion.

Being a annual pass subscriber, and a swtor player I really haven’t been playing wow very much.  But I do plan on playing some here in the near future.

Is it just me or is Mikes “beard” not in the middle of his chin, but rather a bit to his right side?

  • http://twitter.com/Beastingz Bob

I can only speak for myself on this one, but I am not into pandas and had no intention of buying and playing MoP, being more in favor of GW2. BUT! If Blizzard made MoP free, then I would definitively play WoW for the duration of the expansion and likely further. That may just be me, but either blizzard looses $40 and gains a possible $360+ from me in the long run, or they make people pay for the expansion and loose other subscribers like me.

This is by far the best episode of Legendary I have ever seen. KEEP SHAFFNIT!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/VL4AOUVTAPCT2XZPIB264NYDOU Eric

So they gave away 1 million units of D3 so they could report a loss of only 100k subs for WoW?

Even though you forgot during the show, thanks for the shoutout during the After Show!

Amazing ending! Keep it up guys!

PS: When will skippy be back?!

  • http://twitter.com/JayShaddix Jei Shadikkusu

I got SWTOR to check it out, but I was hoping for more.  Yeah, it looks good, but the game play doesn’t feel right.  I re-subbed for the title, in the sheer hope that Bioware will get it right in the future when I can show that off.  But I’ve since cancelled SWTOR and am REALLY happy dishing out casual raid content for at least another couple months.

As for lore, I read up on The Lich King/ Frostmourne and a little on the Legion (since the WoE dungeon), but the details of everything else are sketchy.  I only read about ICC because it seemed like an awesome story (and it totally is!).  I started in Cataclysm, but love WoTK oh so much more.  If Blizzard can return to those great story lines, I think it’ll be a powerful draw point.

I agree, bring back Thrall!  I wonder if there will be story around his child?  I love Thrall, but it would be pretty cool if his kid turned into some baddy in future content (obviously a long way off).

No.  Alliance and Horde shall not merge!

Account wide achieves sounds cool.  This actually makes me feel like Blizzard are filling the “class change” gap.  As Lore was saying, I’d hate to swap classes (new toon) and lose everything.  If my titles, mounts, pets, etc all become account bound, I’d seriously consider a new class.  I love my Warrior, but it’d be fun to change without penalty.  And my server is getting quiet.  Buff server-less WoW. :)

why must we pay for expansion when we pay so much 2 just play the game? :/

Also, I don’t play WoW anymore, but I have annual pass (from Latin America) and I check MMO-Champion everyday.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tony.golightly Tony Golightly

i think annual pass skewed the numbers for subscriber base. i’m subbed via annual pass, and so are many people i know. but WE HAVE NOT LOGGED IN IN MONTHS.

also i like zarhym’s quote “we want you to care about the things you kills, like you know.. NOT CATACLYSM”

    • http://www.facebook.com/anders.proos Anders Proos

You know that you can cancel the subscription with lots of methods?

I just find  it frustrating that they killed of the main characters. They should have just let them survive in some form of another.

  • anders bjorkman

Illidan should have just been some half crazy dude that somtimes helps you and sometimes fight you.

  • anders bjorkman

That was how the story worked in WC3. Why were they so hung up on killing of the major story characters.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Anthony-Budreau/100000144202068 Anthony Budreau

They really need to just give bonus loot/exp/honor etc for killing players out in the world

Also figured out what they preparing you for in MOP, The Elite Four

  • http://twitter.com/Meager44 Joshua Ramirez

I don’t think Blizz is going to open up the beta for MOP for a million people. Its more than likely that they will do it in stages based on system specs.

The Blizzard report is based on Q4, 2011.  You will see the SWTOR effect in Q1, 2012.  SWTOR launched Dec 20th, there isn’t enough time to see the effect during Q4, 2011 because it was launched towards the very end of the quarter.
