EXCLUSIVE: Underwater PvP

We all know how much excitement we get from underwater combat in most MMOs: zero. However, many players extol the underwater combat of Guild Wars 2. I have not tried it myself, but multiple people I know have be more than impressed with the fluidity (no pun intended) and dexterity of the characters while underwater. During the interview with Gary Gannon earlier this evening, Systems Designer Jonathan Sharp was elated over how well the combat system performed during testing so far.

Being the griefer that he is, Gary pressed the question, “Does that mean we will see underwater PvP?” Sharp responded quickly “Yes,” confirming that there will definitely be underwater player versus player combat. However, with Community Manager Martin Kerstein looming over his shoulder, Sharp couldn’t elaborate further. Guild Wars 2 stretches the mold of the MMO enough as it is, and now it has stretch it even more.

I always find the ancestor/descendant thing i kind of weird since GW1 we were all play as Human. just a little weird thought.

I am one of the player that play GW1 over and over, and also most of my friends/guildies. so i’m quite sure there’ll be players who’s somehow going to complete all of those events. (i’m talking about those elite perfectionists out there in the world)

As for the post-release support, i’m most of GW1 player won’t worry about it even a little.

As for post-release support I completely agree that GW1 players wont worry, but there’s a whole load of non-GW players out there curious for this game and they might be harder to convince. Heck, even I, GW1 player since launch, is thinking I wouldn’t have minded to pay a sub for GW2. After all, the size and scope will probably make the maintenance cost of GW2 miles higher than the one for GW1.

I’ll just have to make sure to buy stuff regularly from their shop :).

Haha, did you notice how Gary caught them off guard at the end when he asked “So what are you doing for the weekend?”. They were like.. Uhh,.. Well… What? Gary was totally fishing for a beta date there :P.

  • mcsumo

Really great interview! Gary managed to keep his (fanboy) babbling under control and scored an exclusive! :o (Only joking, Gary, we love you and can’t blame you for being stoked after actually getting to play this weekend.) It really is so cool to see how excited the devs are for their own game.

A question for next time… Adding additional content, how will it work. Are you gonna do big patch per big patch. And some hot fixes in between. Or are you gonna add stuff randomly, like Dynamic  Events and PvP battles etc.

Wow, uploading this video was fast. Much faster than the typical 2 or 3 day delay in posting shows to the old Gamebreaker format. Looking forward to seeing the early next day posting of your other shows.

Anyone else noticed that gary looks like he wasn’t getting enough sleep in the past few days?… i wonder what might be the reason for that ^^

this was a great interview, thanks Gamebreaker and GW2 Dev team!

  • Revanhavoc

That basketball analogy he used broke it down so well that it now annoys me that every game striving for balance doesn’t do something so similar to this. Way to go.

  • DoctorOverlord

One of the best GW2 developer interviews I have seen and I’ve been watching them for a couple of years now.     Well done Gary!   I particularly liked the question about how ArenaNet came about the decision to deal with the trinity.   It was very cool to hear the discussions they had when GW2 was just starting.

I hope ArenaNet will give you the chance for more interviews with their staff.
