Welcome to the very first GuildCast of a brand new year.

This week, Gary Gannon, Elisabeth Cardey and Richie Procopio are joined by Jason Winter.  News may have been low due to the holidays, but that didn’t stop Richie from digging the depths of the Guild Wars 2 forums to find an interesting tidbit from Colin Johanson regarding WvW maps.

And, of course with the new year comes talk of expansions. Will we be seeing one this year?

We even gave you guys the chance to chime in on this matter.

So, start the new year off right with some GW2 goodness.  And, as always, let us know what you think in the comments below.

Fun stuff, I hope they put in more classes, would make sPvP and WvW more interesting.

The culling is also based on bandwidth to and from the server.  Numbers of people is exponential in growth (2 people = 2 packets, 3 = 9).  Planetside 2 has the same issue and it’s all server side.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Yep, the server/bandwidth is such a tricky problem.  The Arenanet contracts with the data centers probably have extensive fees for changing the server/bandwidth (think changing your voice/data plan on a cell phone.)

Set your server/bandwidth too low and the players will get frustrated and stop playing. It eventually fixes itself because of low server pops.

Set your server/bandwidth too high and the company is way overpaying and wasting resources.

    Tin Foil Viking Hat Episode:

WvW is absolutely stale. I’m on Blackgate, and we have had the same match for weeks at a time in
the same rank against pretty much, the same servers.  Even if we end up moving back to Tier 1 that
will eventually become stale too.  There has to be more to it than fighting for rankings.

noticed a huge drop off in participation. Blackgate has some hardcore guilds that keep us on top of the tier
    2.  But it’s only going to get worse unless some fixes come along.  You already discussed culling, which isn’t just a problem in WvW, but also in large Dynamic Events (ie getting killed by invisible rolling Karka.)  It is no fun to be killed by invisible enemies but that dead horse has been beaten enough.

We also need incentives for Guilds.  I would like to see something like FoW, UW,
and Tombs dungeons that you have to fight through and then fight in the Hall of
Hero’s.   If you win a battle in the Hall of Heroes then
you get a perk worth having, like 300% magic find for 48 hours.  It would be even cooler if the NA and EU
guild fight it out in the Hall of Hero’s.

There needs to be WvW exclusive Gear with nice skins that
can only be obtained with Badges.   They need new maps that push people on to the
same maps to hold important objectives instead of getting spread out across
four maps.  The days of queues are gone
    it seems.

I also hate ZERGS in WvW.
They need to make it more strategic instead of just rolling over everyone
in a massive zerg.  I would like to see
each class with a zerg busting skill that does damage to adjacent allies, but
no direct damage to the one that has the condition.  Something like Spiteful Spirit by the Necro
in GW1 would work.  I could apply
confusion up to 5 enemies within 400 range so people have to spread out and
    stop the stacking.

Personally I don’t see Alliance battles coming back, but
like Richie said, I would expect a Jade Quarry and Fort Aspenwood sPVP map at
some point in a future expansion.  I
think we will also see Tengu and Kodan as playable races in the future
expansion.  Maybe we will even see the
return of the Stone Summit and Deldrimor Dwarves?

Jade Quarry here, I feel your pain. For the last 2 months or so, it’s been us, SoS and SBI in tier 1. It would be really nice to be able to play against some different servers every once in a while.

Looking at history reveals very little movement in the rankings. The only thing that seems to trigger a significant movement in the ranks is when a server is up against 2 no-shows at a time. It’d be nice if they did something like; one week match-ups are by rank, next week it’s random, then rank again and keep alternating like that.

The last time I seriously played GW2 was several months ago was a guild WvW session.  We captured the main objective and defended counter attack for a few minutes.  Guess, it gave me the feeling like I “beat” the game.

      • Jay

Sounds like fun… Have you hit level 80 yet?

      • Jado Cast

Yeah, WvW has kept me very interested in the game longer than I thought it would because I usually play more PvE content in my MMO’s but GW2 has been fun in WvW, just getting stale now.  I hope they really freshen things up in Feb.  I’m just tired of the Zergs and so is my guild.

I had a couple ideas with more guild stuff. Items for your guild or hall that only drop in certain dungeons/events(Elite dungeons like you said UW FoW, ect). The chance to get it is higher with the more members. 2 required. I don’t like the idea of RNG but I could deal with this. It would be a great incentive to do stuff together.

Hey guys love the show, listen..don’t really know the logistics of how you run things, but I love when you record stuff on youtube. For some reason I can’t watch flash videos on my nexus 7 and the only ones I can really watch on the go are the youtube videos. Either way, keep up the good work!

Just throwing it out there. Kevin Smith had/has a movie review show in Hulu called like…spoilers or something…it wasn’t/isn’t good. But it does look like he lost some weight…so good for him!

I’d like to see a lunar festival event…

Whatever they do for these upcoming updates and expansion I just hope it is playable.

They’ve already said, their expansion team is as big as their live team, they said this in the article that covered what their teams did back the week after release.

    • Roy

I think the politically-correct term is “incorporated.”

  • Niklas Lemcke

CANTHA!!!!! the one thing i’m waiting for desperately!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/oneniisama Bear Powell

DAoC still *IS* the best PvP MMORPG to date. GW2 is fairly fun and a step up from Warhammer Online, but still nowhere near as good as DAoC even on a TOA server.

looking forward to see what arena net comes up with. Just hope it adds better game play.

Canthan Themed WvW Map involving Kurzick/Luxons. I think this because “Canthan New Year” a holiday in late January-Early February was a major Holiday in Guild Wars 1 and is on the “Major” scale and is just as big as Wintersday and Halloween. I know the Canthan district collapsed so I don’t think there will be a festival in towns, unless a ship full of Canthan’s approach Lion’s Arch and due to Zhaitan being dead.  The Jade Maul/Cliffside in the Fractals are very Canthan Themed, maybe they were clues.

Just some thoughts, let me know what you guys think.

  • http://www.facebook.com/aeon.marlunis Aeon Marlunis

@Elisabeth Cardey The only thing that was stopping us from Cantha is that Cantha became isolationist under Emperor Usoku’s rule, cutting ties with the northern nations. The rise of Zhaitan had further cut off Cantha when his risen fleet took control of the Strait of Malchor. The only proof that Cantha still exists are sporadic sailors washing ashore on the Tarnished Coast.
    Bubbles is southwest of Cantha

    • Roy

The Canthan expansion could have Tyrian and Canthan heroes “banding together” to fight Bubbles, who threatens the Canthan people and the Tyrian orichalcum supply (or something).

By that same token, defeating Kralkatorrik would probably involve slipping an asura gate through and recruiting Elonian heroes (what few remain) as well as sleeper agents in Palawa Joko’s court (or possibly even Palawa Joko himself) to assault the dragon on two fronts.

      • http://www.facebook.com/aeon.marlunis Aeon Marlunis

Yeah when I heard Joko’s undead were fighting Zhaitans undead, I thought we were going to team up with him again. But we may have to against Kralkatorrik.

GW1’s original business model was to release a campaign every six months, which would supplant the need for a monthly subscription. It turned out that the second (Factions) released a year later, followed by the third (Nightfall) six months after that (in October 2006). The Eye of the North expansion came out in August of 2007. So while it is feasible to see an expansion this year, the business model for GW2 is a bit different from the original, so to actually have an official expansion added to the game around a year after release would be a bit surprising in this instance.

The original game (at least to my rose colored memory) didn’t seem to be lacking in as many features and have as many bugs as this one does, and the only regular content release at the time was Sorrow’s Furnace in Sept. or Oct. of 2005, which bridged the gap between Proph and Factions. With the current content release, the need for an official expansion is less, considering there are a lot of other issues that need to be resolved first – such as blowing up WvW like Ilum should be blown up.

    Cantha expansion via pact airships?

  • Schirf

I don’t think we’ll see a level cap increase.   Expansion could be a race and/or a class and some zones.
