Brazilian Wookiee

The Star Wars: The Old Republic news this week focuses on customization and combat. Nearly, everyone in an MMO from the raider to the roleplayer is looking to distinguish himself from the rest of the crowd in some way. In an interview with Dualshockers, Live Producer Cory Butler expressed BioWare‘s commitment to customization. “We understand that our players love customization,” Butler explains, “The game is about choices after all. We want our players to be able to make choices as often as possible and those choices to have consequences.” Bulter did not elaborate on what those consequences might be for, say, having a neon pink ship, but panelist Larry Everett speculated that there will be a strange alien species that doesn’t like pink; when you color you ship pink, the aliens will attack you on site.

GAMEBREAKER delivers the latest from BioWare’s biggest MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic each and every week. This show brings you media personality Gary Gannon, roleplay and lore expert Larry Everett, and PvP extraordinaire Ed Park. If you need the latest tips on playing a Sith Marauder or wonder how to shave a Wookiee, then do not miss a single week of The Republic!

Going from what Larry said maybe someone can answer this for me:

Why does merging servers mean a “death sentence” for the game?  I mean I am sorry, but they messed that up at launch.  I assume that Bioware controls how many people can be on a server before the queue kicks in.  I think they capped it too low for launch.  I understand why they did it (to help with stability and so that the population spread out to other servers).  The fact is (and yes this is a fact) there are lots of servers that do not have many people on them.  At peak play time Imperial Fleet has 70-90 people on it, groups are hard to find, and the AH is empty.  If you merged a few servers I think you will find people are enjoying the game MORE.

Quick note on the mirrored ability differences between factions:

I have a lvl 50 Vanguard main, and am leveling a Mercenary(level 30 right now) and I can tell you that Mortar volley does have a significant delay when compaired to DFA, it’s not just a perception/animation issue. Mortar’s initial damage (and pve stun effect) wont register untill about 2 seconds into the ability’s channel, and it’s final attack ticks about a second after the channel has ended, sometimes causing conflicts with the next casted ability (even post 1.1). Comparing that to DFA, the jump > initial damage causes about a half second delay, and the final rocket will hit right as the BH lands.

MV does have 1 advantage in pve over DFA, the stun effect will not knockback normal/weak mobs occasionally pushing them out of the radius of subsequent ticks.

    • http://twitter.com/NorthwestGamer Northwest Gamer

Yes, this assessment is 100% accurate. The MV / DFA discrepancy has nothing to do with perception by the player, but a real, actual, significant delay of MV.  There is a similar problem with Full Auto, but it’s not quite as obvious. Basically, the cast bar finishes before the animation (and damage) do. The fixes they made to ability delay in 1.1 didn’t address the trooper abilities specifically, which lead me to believe that they’re completely separate problems. It’s funny though, because I don’t remember such an obvious delay of MV when playing in Beta.

video proof for the disbelievers :P close to a second difference between the ticks on MV and DFA.

Wonder if Bioware would consider a controllable range on chat bubbles. An example is, say your in a 150 RP event and you can adjust your slider on chat bubbles to only show within 10 yards of you etc. Is that something the RP community want or no?

Edit: Also curious, as I do not RP, has there been a game where once your grouped you can choose to only see the people you are grouped with chat bubbles?

I think they need to have a more intregated forum system. Allow for notifcations to the layer if someone responds to your posts, threads. Allow for server only forums. Clean up the entire website/forum as well!

For Legacy, allow for that character to be sent over including their Legacy level, but if they go to level that character’s Legacy on that different server, they are no longer linked. Any other method would just hurt Bioware’s sub base.

    • Shaddoe

Most MMOs that I’ve played have the option to just see group chat bubbles.

Hate how they have server forums currently laid out. If they were individual server forums I’d actually go to use them, as is I don’t bother. Don’t care about the posts from other servers and having to look for your server tag on the posts is an annoyance.

    • http://twitter.com/Jirikisunta a.k.a JirAnarion

Totally agree.  You simply cannot have any feeling of community or a functioning community without a dedicated forum for each server.  Not sure why this is hard to implement, or why Bio would choose not to.  Anyone know?

I’m not an RPer, but I’d say I use RP functions somewhere around 18% of my playing time in an MMO, sure. I don’t think 18% of the MMO population RPs and nothing else…I don’t think its that kind of 18%.

Erickson did drop at some point close to launch that when they did another species it would be based on story so you know what it is like to be that species…keep in mind Kashyyyk hasn’t been implemented yet. No wookies at launch makes sense, but once all the players have been through the original story, it could be made an option.

I can tell you that there was much vitrol between imps and rebels in SWG way back in the day, though I don’t think it hurt anything in the long run. Something about the Star Wars IP gets rebel players actually believing they are fighting for good and that the sith are evil to a point that trancends RP. As a result, most of the biggest asshats in that game were rebel (I can say that ’cause I was a rebel :P)

Possible option: server transfer free, legacy transfer cost money. This way, they customer knows they have a choice.

You spent 4 shows (including TWIMMO) talking about Ilum which only a small part of the player base is actually doing actively.
now you spend a show talking about stuff that is more than debated everywhere; bug fixes, small implementations to the game etc. meanwhile you have a really good pvp player on the show and dont talk anything about the current pvp scene. You dont talk anything about the current end game Operations scene.

These are things you do very well in the Legendary show and you need to start doing it for SWTOR aswell othwerwise it becomes irrelevant to wach the show.

      Because SWTORs operations are trash.

When the new Op was released a guild downed it on 16 man night mare mode IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS OF ITS RELEASE. The only challenge they offer is when a bug causes your group to wipe

Bioware is just fumbling in the dark

Y’all need to realize that the majority of current TOR players are not at endgame yet, and are not focused on endgame content.  Bioware knows this and is focusing their efforts on the main player body.

I hate advertising/commercials. Yet, I make it a point to sit through as many here as I can because I know it generates revenue for the GB folks. (and GG needs more V-necks). It just seems odd to me that this being a niche site with a specific audience demographic… Why do all the commercials seem targeted at 40-something moms? It’s all grocery and Jenny Craig-type commercials.. also, the hot pink web banner ad for “Mom’s Only Loans”. I just think ya’ll get a lot more mileage (click-thrus) out of commercials aimed at your intended demographic (Bawls, Totinos, EVGA, Falcon NW, Logitech, etc). Just thought I’d throw this out there.

I realize that I’m probably the only one here who gives a flying crap about this. Flame on! :)

I would gladly forgo any romantic storylines for the chance to play a Wookie, Mon Cal, Rodian, etc. Limiting the available races to only human-like species was a big mistake, in my opinion, and makes the game feel less like Star Wars. Hopefully the Legacy system adds previously unavailable races and not just options from the other faction (ie Miraluka Sith)

    • http://twitter.com/Jirikisunta a.k.a JirAnarion

I think adding a few cooler races to Republic would make absolute sense both from a faction balance standpoint, AND  from a lore standpoint.  The Republic represents thousands of races and hundreds of thousands of worlds.  The Empire represents Sith and humans, with a few exceptions.  It makes absolute sense for the Rep to have more race options than the Empire.

I wanted to say something about populations. In my research regarding wow populations it was in fact overall an even mix horde/alliance across the world. PvP server had horde dominance, RP had alliance dominance. Two things that actually stopped the horde from being out numbered were the blood elves and the fact their faction over all had better players. So the bads moved to horde thinking they could be carried and all the people who wanted to look like elves did too.(beats me as to why). The most dominant race by miles was belf and human for alliance. I dont think rodian/wooky/random weird race would really make any kind of large scale noticeable difference to pops. BW should never have allowed  more than half a servers total population to be Empire (restrict ppl to one faction per server and this wouldnt be too hard to do right ?). I also think what Ed says pretty much sums it up, reward the faction that is outnumbered not the zerg faction. For me just the lack of hutball is enough I made 1 level 16 BH and after playing 8 hutball in a row I was done. Great show guys btw.

By the way: who give a shit about PvP in which there is no risk of any loss?  I play TOR for PvE carebeartime.  I play EVE for real PvP.  The kind that makes you bleed.

I think adding player gambling is a great idea.  Having player vs. player Pazaak or Sabacc would be fun, would expand gameplay, and would give some of those super-rich 50s something to do with their truckloads of money.  What do you think?

Just to add to the thing about project timings, it’s actually worse than that because if you’re a tank spec the buff particle acceleration only applies if it’s active when the damage is dealt, not when you activate. This means that you sometimes miss the buff (which gives a guaranteed crit) because of this timing difference. This makes it pretty significant as it happens.

Question for your next show.  We all know Gabe is running the pvp side of Swtor, and seeing his track record from Warhammer Online, do you think it was a wise choice for them to hire him? If you look at how terrible the pvp community is responding to the current implementation, should we all roll bright wizards? *cough*I mean sorcs/mercs?
