Weekly League Of Legends Drama

This week on OMGLoL.

  • Curse benches Elementz
  • Rumors fly that CLG purchased by Azubu Frost
  • 3xecutioner banned for no reason?
  • More streamers jumping ship from Own3d to Twitch.tv
  • http://twitter.com/Cpt_Badger Cpt.Badger

Too bad you guys make a show about the most mediocre game in the MOBA genre. It has inferior graphics and simplified, dumbed down mechanics. Why can’t we have a show about Dota 2 ? It will, at some point, dethrone LoL. No doubts about it.

Then when that happens, and when Dota 2 is finally released, i’m sure they’ll make a show about it.

Honestly IMO they should just make a show about the e-sports scene in general. Sort of like twimmo where they go over the different happenings in all e-sports in general for the week. I mean you got CS:GO, Dota 2, LoL (hate on it all you want, it still has alot more followers and players than Dota 2, and it’ll still be free to play while Dota 2 will have to be paid for), Starcraft 2, Arena’s, and i’m sure many more of the upcoming games will be huge in the Esports area as well.

lol you think the graphics of dota 2 is better than lol? 32 million people play lol let me know when dota 2 gets that many trololololo

    • OtisJay

those ” simplified, dumbed down mechanics.” is why Riot has so many more active players. it’s what ppl like to play. It’s like asking why people keep buying the “NEW” CoD every year. I don’t get it.

       “Inferior Graphics”

Feel free to use inferior graphics as a talking point with the rest of your teen friends. Doesn’t exactly fly as a legit point anywhere else.

      “Simplified, dumbed down mechanics”

And it’s because of those relatively simplified mechanics that it’s the most spectator friendly and therefor, most popular MOBA game out there. It’s way easier to understand what’s going on in LoL than it is in DoTA 2.

Really, shitting on LoL for the above reasons is elitist snobbery.

“Feel free to use inferior graphics as a talking point with the rest of your teen friends. Doesn’t exactly fly as a legit point anywhere else.” this feels a lot like snobbery to me although I do agree that bringing up the graphics isn’t productive for this Dota v League discussion. The graphics in League are the ones that pander to teenagers, not the ones in Dota, so if this guy was a teen he would most like be playing LoL not Dota.
“Simplified, dumbed down mechanics” I actually feel that this is a legitimate point against LoL.
Dota is in closed beta so comparing numbers is asinine. I do however expect that LoL will never be overtaken by Dota, and its for the same reason that McDonalds is a world wide success. They cater to the lowest common denominator rather than make the best product on the market. Good business decision, but don’t expect many serious gamers to be happy about it.(or any food critics to give McDonalds 5 stars just because they have more *active customers* )
If having an issue with things always being geared towards the lowest common denominator is elitist snobbery then I will happily accept the title elitist snob :)

“The graphics in League are the ones that pander to teenagers, not the ones in Dota”

          /facepalm

Art style is not the same as graphics. It’s completely ignorant to think they are the same thing.

“Dota is in closed beta so comparing numbers is asinine”

Keys have been widely available for a long time, and the ability to stream games and tournaments has also been up for a while. Those that had the drive to play on a serious level (which are primarily the ones who stream) have been, and while I don’t have the numbers, I’m going to go on a limb and say they don’t compare to LoL’s streams or tournaments. So while it isn’t released, the numbers on streams gives some insight to the popularity.

“They cater to the lowest common denominator rather than make the best
product on the market. Good business decision, but don’t expect many
serious gamers to be happy about it”

First, you’re comparing apples to a tire iron. While both are cheap and accessible, one spends alot on marketing, the other spends alot on constant development. If Riot and their owners didn’t care about the quality of the game (which they obviously do), then it probably would of gone the way of HoN, which has significantly fallen off the radar.

Second, what will draw serious gamers (and by serious I mean professional) away from LoL is the money, not “These mechanics are so much tighter!” If the spectators are more apt to watch ads, and subscribe to a channel that is streaming LoL instead of DotA 2.. then naturally there will be a better incentive in playing LoL than DotA 2.

Art Style…Graphics…Pure semantics. You sound like TotalBiscuit or something…

Next you will be complaining to us about FOV…

Hahha. No actually I liked your opinion about the financial incentives of League. Spot on.

Art style and graphics quality are far from the same thing… Very very far

    • http://twitter.com/Khitchary Khitchary

I don’t know what you mean by throne, but if you mean concurrent players I wouldn’t hold my breath. If you mean as the best quality moba… I don’t feel that it holds that throne now.

Do your own show about Dota 2 maybe Gary will give you a slot at Gamebreaker!
Besides if Graphics was such a big issue then Minecraft would have not sold a single copy (as a comparison)

  • Jado Cast

    Great Show Guys!

  • http://twitter.com/FourCourtJester Shaun Delaney

Guys, this isnt a forum for MOBA Wars. if Cpt. Badger wishes to not like the show, thats his call. For everyone else, glad you enjoy the show :)

    • Revanhavoc

Cpt. Badger. is very much responsible for stimulating a debate – that’s a good thing in my books, even when it’s borderline trolling.

And if you’re trying to avoid a discussion where people aren’t arguing over which game is better, between their own favourite and the competition, you don’t know Gamebreaker yet! :-)
