Great show guys! Dug tonight’s behind the scenes look at the funding of games. Partially answered a lot of my questions about why indies stay independent.

We’ve heard a lot of talk about middlecore games over the episodes, could we possibly go into more detail about some of their effective business models and some pitfalls to avoid when developing them?
    Keep up the good work!

Final fantasy XIV: Realm reborn is the game thats going to do it, will be the WoW killer

Don’t say that, labeling a game as a “WoW Killer” is a sure sign the game will fail.

If WoW didn’t exist none of the other MMOs would exist as they would have nothing to copy from & same with Everquest if it didn’t exist than WoW wouldn’t exist.

MMOs wouldn’t be mainstream like they are today & alots of people would be alot richer.

you know what game will be the wow killer?

wow will kill its self, it sucks right now as it is.

guildwars 2 wont kill it, but maybe it will

If there hadn’t been WoW, there wouldn’t have been Arenanet.  So, no Guild Wars, no Guild Wars 2.

  • Poordevil

Well, I have to disagree with the great MONTY. I do not think there will ever be another MMO that approaches the wild success of WoW. I think it was a case of being at the right place at the right time with the right product, and the chances of all those stars being aligned like that again in our life time is nil. The time and place can never be duplicated, those days are in the past. That leaves only the product alone that must duplicate WoW’s success. That is a tall order, and I do not think we will ever see it done.

I think there will be an MMO that surpasses WoW and makes it look like a dwarf in comparison (pun intended).  But it won’t be an MMORPG.  It will be something we haven’t even imagined yet.

    Another Great Show!

If only games didn’t copy the EQ model so heavily and maybe instead mimicked the sandbox design or a game that plays more like Asheron’s Call.

I agree with “Poordevil” down below, WoW was indeed a rare celestial phenomenon, too many things were just primed to take advantage of and were. It’s not a matter of getting great games or better games I would argue we have had many better games (MMOs) since WoW, perhaps far better. We just wont see that popularity spike again or market dominance with huge record profits altogether. Now I am not saying it wont eve happen again but it will be a rare thing.

I think you don’t know what a MMO is.

People, including some of the GBTV casters, tend to lump games like LoL as an MMO.

I made the clear distinction that an MMO is something that has an open world (not an arena) where your presents in the world doesn’t drag or inhibit the experience of other players. Even if there is a mere lobby and can hold staggering numbers of playable characters then I wold call it an MMO.

In LoL you can’t join a game and afk out and expect that t be seen as acceptable. The moment you join it’s about playing to achieve a victory in which you take up a slot on the team on a stagnant and resetting world.

In any game most would accept calling an MMO whether you jump into the game or not has little affect on those around you, your just a mere presence (assuming you weren’t doing anything actively).
